Phoenix POV

I was practically bouncing as I walked to Care of Magical Creatures with Leo. He was still grumbling about something. But, I didn’t care.

“Remember what West told you,” he reminded me as we followed the other kids to the woods. I nodded, and hugged my Monster Book (Jeffery) to my chest as I caught up to Harry, Ron and Hermione.

West had told me that I have to watch myself with the animals. Only answer or respond if I’m sure a human said something. I smiled as stood next to Harry. Hagrid was smiling under his bushy black beard.

“Come on! Gather ‘round!” Hagrid bellowed, grinning still. I stood in the front of the class, with Harry, Leo, Ron and Hermione. I saw Neville holding tight to his monster book. I’d have to have a talk with it later.

“Everyone gather ‘round the fence here! That’s it-Make sure you can see-Now, the firs’ thing yeh’ll have ter do is open yer books-”

“How?” Draco Malfoy snapped coldly. And, dare I say, sassily.

“Eh?” Hagrid asked, confused.

“How do we open our books?” he asked, holding up a Monster Book bound tightly with rope. It broke my heart. Poor thing was in pain! They all were in pain!”

“Hasn’-Hasn’ anyone bin able ter open their books?” Hagrid asked, crest fallen. I raised my hand, and he gave me a grateful look.

“Yeh’ve got to stroke ‘em!” Hagrid said, taking Hermione’s book and running a hand down the spine.

“Oh, how silly we’ve all been! We should have stroked them! Why didn’t we guess?” Malfoy said loudly, rudely.

“I-I thought they were funny,” Hagrid said, a hint of sadness in his gruff voice.

“Oh, tremendously funny! Really witty, giving us books that try to rip out heads off!” He yelled, just to hear his own voice.

“Shut up Draco,” I hissed at him, glaring at him. His eyes went blank, and he shut his mouth. He seemed to sway a bit as he took a step towards his friends.

“Righ’ then, so-so yeh’ve got yer books an’-an’ now yeh need the Magical Creatures. Yeah. So I’ll go an’ get ‘em. Hang on…” Hagrid said as he hurried away.

“God this place has gone to the dogs. That oaf teaching classes, my father’ll have a fit when I tell him-”

“Oh shut up will yeh?” Leo moaned, leaning on a rock, crossing his arms. He flicked his hair out of his eyes, and I saw Lavender Brown and a few other girls sigh. “No one care what ‘yer bloody father’ll do!”

“Careful, White, there’s a Dementor behind you!” Malfoy said, skittering backwards, crashing into me.

“Watch it,” I said lowly, glaring at him. He smirked, and lowered his face to mine.

“What are you going to do about it?” he snarled, his face in inch from mine. I just stared at him, I heard Leo yelling at him, being held back from hitting Draco by Harry and Ron.

“Take a step back, and don’t insult Hagrid,” I said in the most convincing tone I could when I had my teeth clenched, trying to get him to leave me the hell alone. His eyes glazed over, so they where a dull silver color. His jaw was slack, and he took a few steps back, trying to get away from me. I just stared at him, before I felt Leo grab my shoulder gently and turn me towards where Hagrid was bringing out the most beautiful creatures I’ve seen yet.
