1 Day 1/2 LaterAnd what a long day it had been...
It was late when you were finally allowed to leave HPSC headquarters. Even then, you spent all of the next day in an interrogation room with the cultists you arrested. One at a time. They didn't resist, even without your pheromones they complied. Mostly.
When you counted and named the many people each of them had killed or assisted in killing, the gravity of this organization became real to you again. Heller had said the majority of the ones they killed deserved it, but that was just according to them. The police had only arrested maybe a few hundred? Heller was still out there, thanks to you. And his friends.
The process was far from over, but the investigators let you go home once it got late. You were drained. After a real break back home with Midnight, you got to recharge like a normal person. She had cooked and served you all tons of rice, meat and veggies. Hawks was ecstatic.
Yeah... he came too. In fact, an entire escort protected the house. Monarch was there as well, to no shock. His poor limbs were wrapped up from his hospital visit, but that didn't stop him from being over the moon to see you. You had expected him to be furious, but the majority of the night consisted of him crying and snuggling you until you suffocated.
While Hawks chatted up Midnight and helped her with dishes, you accompanied Monarch on the couch. You propped his leg up with a pillow but leaned into his side so he could hug you with his good arm.
"I believe this is yours," Monarch batted his thick lashes and handed you something, "Take good care of her next time..."
It was butterfly necklace. You beamed, figuring it had been lost forever. He offered to clip it back around your neck for you.
"Thank you," you said, "I'm sorry I lost it in the first place. How did you get it?"
"Apparently, the little girl you saved had it on her when she escaped the first time! You little sneak - I'm proud of you for challenging that Yakuza pest," he scowled.
The jewel was so dainty it hardly weighed anything, but it still felt comforting to wear. "Hang on. It's a her? You gave my necklace a gender?" You asked.
"It is indeed. One of the most beautiful hers I had the pleasure of meeting," Monarch mused, "I hope that doesn't creep you out..."
"Wait..." you looked back down at the sparkly rock, "This is... you turned my mom into a diamond?"
"We had joked about it once," Monarch shrugged, "She told me one day that if she were ever to die young to make her into something beautiful for you to keep, after you became a woman. She wasn't the very traditional sort. Her first idea was a tree but luckily I passed on that or she probably would've burned with the rest of my greenhouse... Do you not like it now? I should've said something but we had Overhaul rudely interrupt my day."
You admittedly felt odd wearing a dead person, your dead mother, but between this and the music box, they were the only things you had left of her. Not even memories.
But you had Monarch too, who really seemed to love her.
"I'll wear it," you smiled, "I almost wish I had stayed with Butcher when he died. I don't know why... I thought that's what I wanted, but now I wonder if I'll regret it."
Monarch took your hand with his long fingers, "Pumpkin, the only one with regrets in regards to your relationship should be him. But if you ever want to talk about him... I guess I could stomach that much for you."
