The last week of my pregnancy was odd. To say the least. The anxiety of having to give birth was killing me.
I sat in the rocking chair in the nursery with Indra kneeling on the floor with his ear to my round stomach. We were as happy as can be.
"His heartbeat is strong." Indra said.
"Yes." I could hear it too.
"I can't wait to meet you. I'm just imagining all the things we're going to do together. I love you very much." Indra said in a baby voice. I smiled and chuckled. He's always talking to the baby. He's going to be a good father. I know it.
"I know you're bored." I said to Indra after he stood up. I rested my hands under my belly. "You can leave if you'd like."
"Bored?" Indra questioned. "I'm having a ball. And I can't leave, crazy. You may go into labor."
"Renata is here. If I went into labor we know what to do, you could just come back." I said. Indra made Renata learn everything she could on delivering a baby.
"Nope." Indra said.
I closed my eyes, nodding.
"Do you feel okay?"
"Of course." I opened my eyes. "I can't stop feeling anxious." My stomach was vibrating.
"I'm going to give birth soon."
We decided we'd choose a name after the birth, after we know the gender.
Indra leaned forward and kissed my lips. "Everything will be okay." I smiled and nodded.
A few days passed. I don't think I'm gonna go into labor this week.
At noon I stood at the stove cooking a steak. I bounced and hummed as I watched it cook. Indra was out back riding Benny. Finally got him out of the house. Kind of.
Without warning I peed. Right on the floor. "You could've told me I had to go to the bathroom!" I lifted my dress and looked down. That's not pee.
"Ohh kay." I said slowly. I turned off the stove and moved the skillet to another eye. It's happening. Stay calm!
I walked calmly to the back door and shouted.
"Indra! I'm in labor!"
Then closed the door and went to the stairs.
"Renata?" I called. She stood from the stairs and looked at me.
"I heard you. Let me take you upstairs." She said. I nodded and she took my hand and waist.
We slowly went up the stairs and into the bedroom.
I huffed and grunted, doubling over as a contraction hit. I know they said it'd hurt, but I wasn't expecting this. The pain caused me to stop in the middle of the room.
"Breathe through it." Renata said. I breathed in and out slowly. The pain faded away and we started moving.
Renata helped me get on the bed and Indra walked in.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"Just had my first contraction." I smiled.
He came to my side and kneeled, taking my hand.
"We have a few hours. This will be a long process." Renata told us.
"That's okay." I said quietly.
I was uncomfortable on my back so Indra helped me roll onto my side, facing him.
Seeing how far we've come... I got nostalgic. Philosophical.
