"Resound Thunder!" Akeno shouted, as a large thunderbolt hurled itself at Alex, who suppressed a flinch.

Alex, wings unfurled, flew out of the blast radius, and responded with a concentrated with a beam of fire that also failed to meet its target.

Alex had continued taking magic lessons from Akeno, and right now they were sparring.

The one rule? Only magic, and in Alex's case, his sacred gear. That meant he couldn't just stomp her into the ground.

"Your attacks need to be faster than that, Alex~" Akeno taunted from the skies, hurling more bolts of lightning down onto him.

Alex flew across the field, evading her attacks. "Or they could be wider." He said to himself, before trying something he'd hardly experimented with before.

He took a deep breath, and summoned a huge blizzard. A violent downpour of snow and ice, came from the skies, along with a harsh wind.

Akeno covered her face, and suddenly lost track of Alex. "Clever boy, aren't y-"

A magic circle appeared underneath her, and Akeno suddenly felt a heavy pressure wrack her body. And then she was heading for the ground, slowly but surely.

"Gotcha!" Alex sped towards her. Akeno's lips parted in a gasp as she failed to catch herself before he closed in.

His foot stopped inches from her face. "Shit! I forgot the rules!"

Akeno deadpanned, and shocked him until he fell to the ground.

...

"That was very impressive. You're starting to give me a run for my money in the magic department." Akeno praised Alex as the two rested on the ground.

Alex seemed unfocused for a moment. He was rubbing his arms, and staring off.

"...Alex?" Akeno asked, concerned. It snapped the boy out of it. "Huh? Oh, uh, yeah..."

"It's thanks to you, really." Alex deflected. "You're way more experienced with this stuff. You've taught me so much."

"Ara ara." Akeno hid a blush. "Such daring words."

"Huh?"

"Besides that, it's not just the skill you're building up. You're magic reserves are quite frankly absurd." Akeno told him. "I've honestly never seen anything like it before."

"My magic reserves?"

"Yes. Think of it like your stamina when it comes to magic."

Alex nodded. "That makes sense."

"Mhm. A rook who's skilled in magic, and quick? I think you just might become the peerage's ace sooner or later." Akeno said.

Alex raised an eyebrow. "You think so, huh?" He grinned. "I guess I'm going after your spot then."

Akeno chuckled. "So you think I'm the ace, and not Rias?"

Alex shrugged. "Rias is great. Her power is good, she's pretty smart, and cares about us. But she wouldn't be anywhere near where she is without you. That I'm sure of."

Akeno gasped lightly.

"I mean no disrespect to Rias, of course. But, well, you're the one who took so much time to teach me when you didn't have to."

Akeno smiled. "I do what I can to help everyone in the peerage." She said.

"But... thank you. That really means a lot."

The two sat in silence for a while, until Akeno eventually spoke up again.

"What was that spell you used on me?" Akeno asked. "It wasn't your sacred gear, right? I was surprised when you suddenly forced me down..."
