DON'T MIND ME, READ ON.
Tiana’s POV:
It was completely silent in the car as Aidan drove us all to I-don’t-know-where. That’s right, even though I was officially In the Middle of Everything, no one bothered to tell me where we’re going. Glitch the hobo-vampire (sorry, but that’s what he looked like) sat in the back, nervously fiddling with a gold chain with a cross on it, which I found extremely ironic. Turned out vampires could be Christians too. They just couldn’t exactly step into the holy light and be baptized or anything. I wasn’t exactly clear on how all that worked, seeing as I wasn’t a) a vampire, or b) a Christian and didn’t really think it was relevant enough to ask.
We stopped at a lake. Literally, the parking lot was in front of the lake. Aidan turned the engine off and just sat there for a moment. I looked at him, still not convinced that he was okay. He felt me staring though, and he snapped “I’m fine” at me before climbing out of the car.
I sat there for a second longer, biting my lip. Okay, I knew that Gavin’s death affected him, I mean, despite his whole ‘I’m a badass and I don’t give a crap’ demeanour, Aidan was the type of guy that would feel guilty forever if someone sacrificed something for him. Hero complex, whatever.
Apparently I sat there too long because Glitch in the back piped up, “Don’t worry, girlie, Aidan’s just being difficult.” I’d forgotten that he was back, so I jumped a bit.
I didn’t know if it was the fact that this Glitch guy was the weirdest person (technically, vampire) I’d ever met, or the fact that I knew Aidan didn’t mean to but it still hurt when he snapped at me, but I blurted, “He’s hurting.”
There’s a pause, in which I could feel him study me in the rear-view mirror. “You care for him, eh?” I didn’t reply, and I didn’t have to. “Look, he’ll get over it. Aidan’s a big boy. Who you really need to worry about, girlie, is yourself.” His eyes locked onto mine in the mirror. “I don’t know why or how, but you’ve somehow got yourself mixed into this now. Be careful, dearie. It’s a big scary world out there, and even scarier realm. And Aidan is smack dab in the middle of all that scary, so you best watch out or you’ll get your fragile little heart broken.”
I didn’t know how to respond to that, let alone tell him off for making it like I was some weak little human girl (which, come to think of it, I supposed I was, but still). Turned out, I didn’t get the chance because at that moment Aidan pulled open my door and said pointedly, “You guys going to get out or keep chatting in there?”
“Alright, alright, keep your fangs on,” drawled Glitch, getting out.
I followed, shutting the door after me. It was peaceful at this lake, not another car or person in sight. Any other time I would be opposed to being alone in such a secluded place, but I wasn’t technically alone. Besides, Aidan was there.
Darn it. That made it sound as if I was counting on him to save and protect me. I didn’t doubt that he would, but it’s just… I couldn’t believe how much I was relying on him. I shouldn’t do that.
We settled by the lake, staring at the water silently. I didn’t know if I should be listening to whatever Glitch had to say, but Aidan grabbed my arm and pulled me down beside him, so I didn’t have much choice. Glitch paced in front of us, still fiddling with the chain around his neck and muttering under his breath. I glanced at Aidan, thinking about what Glitch had said. I didn’t think Aidan had heard our little conversation in the car, even with the whole super-hearing factor. He had been too busy chucking rocks to the other side of the lake to pay attention, I hoped.
