Aidan’s POV:
I kick at the stones on the path, deep in thought. In just a few short days, my whole life had been dug up and thrown upside down. Everything I knew turned out to be untrue. I still didn’t know if it was a good thing or not.
Sighing, I sat down on the hood of my car, staring out at the water of the lake. After dropping Tiana off, I’d driven to find Gavin again. We had another, ah, little talk, though he’d looked a bit edgy. Now I was at a quiet lake, alone with my thoughts.
Based on what Gavin told me and what Tiana had seen lately… It looked like the vampire realm was really at unrest. The bloodsuckers were getting very restless and desperate. And desperate, dangerous, non-human beings that walked in the night did not make a good sign for the future. Apparently Zane was still in hiding. No one but the people closest to him knew where he was. Gavin’s sources say he’s close to the city, trying to blend in. Gavin’s calculating mind said that Zane was also looking for something.
Namely, me.
“I never asked for any of this,” I muttered. All I’d wanted was to live a normal life-----well, as normal as a teenage half-vampire could live in a place full of humans. Now it looked as if I had no choice but to get involved. I was in this stupid war anyway, whether I liked it or not. Especially since Prince Zane seemed intent on bringing it to my doorstep. I couldn’t leave it alone if my parents----they were still the ones who raised me-----and most likely Tiana could get hurt.
Suddenly, my phone started buzzing, and I almost jumped right into the damned lake. “What the---” I looked at the screen. Unknown number. Frowning, I picked up. “Hello?”
“Aidan?” It was a girl. It sounded familiar. Holy crap, if it was another one of those annoying sluts, I was going to chuck my phone into the lake. “Aidan, oh my god---- thank god it’s you! I mean, sorry to bother you, but you were the only person we could think of, and Tiana had said that she used your phone, so then I thought I could use the call history and-----”
“Okay, hold up, who are you? And what happened to Tiana?” I straightened at her name, my mind suddenly racing, imagining different circumstances----all involving her getting hurt. That did not help at all; now my heart was pounding and I could feel myself go all tense.
“I’m her friend, Sana?” The girls sounded worried out of her mind, which made me worried out of my mind, which wasn’t good. “We were driving home,” she explained quickly, “when suddenly she just----she’s still--- well, I don’t know, but it looked like she was in pain, and Andrea told me to pull over and try calling you. She’s in the back with Tiana right now, but Tiana’s still---- What’s wrong with her? Andrea said it’s a panic attack or something, but I don’t know, it looks so bad and-----Oh my god, Aidan, what are we supposed to do?” She sounded close to tears.
“Where are you guys right now?” I demanded, as sharply and calmly as I could. Someone had to keep their shit together, or we were all going to lose it.
“Um, we’re---” A pause in which she was probably looking up and checking. “Two blocks away from your place. Tiana just screamed your name. Is that good or bad?”
