Tiana's POV:
I sat down across from Sandra, mouth watering a little at the food on the table. A moment later, Aidan joined us, sitting on my right, and completely ignoring me.
As we dug in, Sandra began to question me. “So. Tiana, you moved around a lot?”
“Yeah,” I replied, trying and failing to catch peas with my fork. “Didn’t stay in one place for more than a year.”
“We heard that um...” She hesitated. “Sorry, if this is rude but... you're an orphan, right? If you don’t mind me asking, how did it happen?”
I stared down at my plate. Sandra looked nervous. Darrel frowned, and even Aidan stopped moving. I understood her curiosity, but... it was hard to answer. I took a deep breath anyway. “It was a long, long, time ago. I wasn’t there, but they told me it was a train crash. It was a tragedy for lots.” I shrugged, acting nonchalant. My stomach was clenched though. Even after so many years, it was still bothering me. And it wasn’t even like I remembered them much.
“I'm sorry,” Sandra said sympathetically, which I hated. “So... you've been in foster homes then?”
“Yes,” I answered, stabbing at the peas. Did Mr. Hickerson give out all my information?
“I see.” She stayed quiet for a while. But not long enough. “So you're going to be a senior this year?”
“Junior,” I corrected automatically.
“Right. You just seemed so mature.” She gave me a smile so bright I couldn’t help smiling back, just a little. “Well, Aidan here's a senior. He can show you around. Right, Aidan?”
He grunted. I took that as he probably won’t even talk to me, let alone show me around. Whatever. It wasn’t the first time I've been to a new school.
“So you've never been this far west before, have you?” Sandra asked.
I shook my head. I was kind of surprised, since I'd been travelling around a lot. I’d even been to foreign countries like England, France, and once in Asia. But I'd never been this far west in my own country.
“That's great!” gushed Sandra. (She really was too cheerful for her own good.) “We can introduce you to some things here. And Aidan can show you around town. After all, you wouldn’t want to hang around us old people---” She giggled, “---and you can meet kids your age, like Aidan's friends.” She ignored Aidan's glare.
“That's okay,” I said quickly. “I can explore on my own. It's not the first time I've been to different places...”
“Nonsense, dear,” Sandra said. “We'll be your guides. The city gets more and more dangerous each year. With a girl as pretty as you...” I blushed unwillingly. “Don’t go anywhere without us, or at least have Aidan with you.”
Aidan scowled, but didn’t say anything. Darrel sent him a look.'
“Thanks,” I mumbled. Well, it wasn’t everyday someone wants to take care of me...
