Tiana's POV:

I stumbled into Aidan when he stopped to unlock the door. âSorry,â I muttered. I was running on adrenaline and fear right now, and considering I was half-drunk and just had the scare of my life, I was doing pretty well.

"S'alright, come on," Aidan said, guiding me in with a hand on my arm to steady me. He shut the door behind us, then stiffened suddenly. He cursed under his breath. Turning, I understood why immediately.

Sandra and Darrel were sitting right in the living room.

They hadn't noticed us yet, though. But they would in a moment, as the stairs to the basement were on the other side of the living room. "Let me do the talking," Aidan hissed in my ear. "Try to act as, well, not-drunk as possible."

Sandra and Darrel looked up as we walked further into the house. "Home already?" said Darrel with a mild smile. "Thought you kids would be out all night."

"Had fun?" Sandra asked, a bit anxiously, "Nothing bad happened, did it?"

"No," Aidan replied in his normal, non-committal, bored tone. âTiana just had a headache, so we decided to come home.â

I didnât have to try hard to pretend that my head hurt. It did kind of throb, but with the beer and events this night so far, well, Iâd like to see you try walking away without a headache.

âOh, is she alright?â Sandra made a move to come closer.

âFine,â Aidan replied firmly, subtly ushering me past them. âSheâs just going to go lie down. Itâs pretty late anywayâ€Â¦Ã¢Â€Â

“Oh, okay,” nodded Sandra, still looking a bit worried. “If you need anything, just call, okay?”

“Goodnight, mom, dad,” Aidan added, pulling me toward the basement.

It could’ve been my imagination, but I thought I heard Sandra say to Darrel something like, “See, Aidan’s taking care of Tiana. That’s a very good sign…”

Aidan pulled me straight into his room. I looked around drowsily, aware this was the first time I’d ever been inside his room so far. Typical boy room, posters of bands and video games, speakers in the corner, stacks of CDs lying around, dark clothes spilling from the closet, and a bunch of books spread out over the floor. It was, well, different from what I’d been imagining. Neater, more normal… I guessed I’d been imagining a dark lair or something; he spent so much time holed up in here, it seemed likely he was harbouring a dragon or something like that. It just wasn’t what I thought a… teenage vampire’s room would look like.

Aidan shut the door, turning to lean on it. He closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them and stared straight at me, green eyes serious and… green.

“So,” he said, and then stopped. He ran a hand through his hair, taking a deep breath. “Uh, I guess… uh…”

“Fang!” I shouted suddenly, and he blinked at me, probably wondering if I needed to be in a straightjacket, now. I pointed at his earring. “It’s not a dagger! It’s a fang! As in, teeth! Sharp teeth. Like a fang…!”
