Ch. 1: A New Beginning... Pfft, Yeah Right.
I looked up at the pale yellow house, checking the address my guardian had given me. Yup, this was the right one. Lots of flowers and windows. There was even a sign in the front that said, "Come in, We don't bite". Well. I've been to worse.
My parents died when I was too young to remember much about them. Then Mr. Hickerson, this really loaded lawyer, suddenly appeared and claimed he was my guardian. I’ve never seen him before in my life, but hey, I was too young then to say anything. He sent me to foster homes, some of which weren't pleasant, but I never stayed in one place for too long. He always seemed to know when I needed to move. Or he sent money when I ran out. He also sent me birthday cards too. At least I know someone still remembered.
I saw him only 3 times in my life. When he first revealed who he was; when he sent me to a boarding school when I was 13; and just last week, when he announced I was going half-way across the country as some kind of home stay student. Yay me.
He said it's a great experience (for what?), a new beginning (yeah, right), and it’ll be good for me or something. Really, I just think he wants me out of his hair. If I'm half way across the country, he doesn’t have to deal with me that often.
I looked down at my outfit, jean cut-offs and a red t-shirt, plus a pair of fairly new sneakers. I straightened my ponytail, and headed up the steps.
A smiling middle-aged woman opened the door. Her red hair matched her red sweater. "Hello!" She held out her hand. "I'm Sandra. You must be Tiana."
I gave her my most polite smile, and shook her hand.
A tall man appeared behind her. He had dark hair and glasses rimmed his dark green eyes. "This is Darrel, "Sandra said.”Come in!"
I shook hands with Darrel, who smiled at me. (This smiling thing is getting a bit creepy.) "We're really glad to have you here," Sandra continued. "Did you have a good trip? Did you get lost?"
No duh, woman, why the hell am I standing in front of you then? I didn’t mean to be rude, I was just tired. Instead, I smiled, and thankfully she moved on without my answer.
"I guess this is a bit of a change for you huh?" asked Sandra.
"Kind of," I replied, pulling my stuff in behind me. "I've moved around a lot when I was little."
"Oh," said Sandra. "Well, I hope you'll like living here. Now, I need to make dinner, so maybe my son can show you around." Darrel had already drifted upstairs.
I didn’t know they had a son. No one mentioned a son. I hope he's too obsessed with Pokémon cards or whatever.
Sandra hollered down the hall, "Aidan!" Then she turned to me almost apologetically. "He can be difficult, but he's really alright guy once you know him." She headed into the kitchen, leaving me beginning to suspect that 'Aidan' had probably got over Pokémon cards a long time ago.
My suspicions were proven when someone appeared at the top of the basement stairs. A really hot someone. The boy looked about my age, with black hair that hung just above his eyes, which were an intense green. He was dressed in black clothes that hung to his body just right, showing off his strong build. I could see a tiny dagger of some sort glinting from his left ear, and he also had a lip ring, as well as some tattoo snaking out around his right arm, just below the sleeve of his black t-shirt. He looked like some emo badass, plus he was really, really, hot.
"You done?" he snapped, and I looked up at his eyes. They were a stunning green, more in focus than his father's. Right now, he was glaring at me.
I don’t know what the guy's problem was; I knew he was checking me out, too. But I forced a smile, and said, "Hi, you must be Aidan. I'm Ti-----"
"Tiana, I know." He rolled his eyes. "Like my parents haven't been all, 'Tiana, the home stay girl that's gonna be staying here, she's so cool, we're so excited to have Tiana here with us' all summer."
I opened my mouth, but couldn’t find anything to say that wasn't a swearword or a rude suggestion, so I didn’t respond. Aidan abruptly turned and started towards the basement.
"Come on," he said over his shoulder. "You can carry the bags, right?"
"Well, it's not like you're offering," I muttered under my breath. I didn't think he heard, but his shoulders stiffened just the slightest bit.
I'd made it to the top of the stairs leading down when it happened. My vision went hazy, and I heard this rushing sound in my ears. I felt dizzy for a second, then I blinked, and thankfully my vision came back, before something serious happened. The first thing I saw was Aidan's green eyes. He now stood on the 1st step down; making him about my height so I don’t have to tilt my head back to look at him (he was a head taller than me, no fair).
"What happened? Why d'you stop?" he was saying.
I was confused. I'm sure I only spaced out for a second, because usually it'd be longer and Aidan would probably be asking if I needed to go to the nearest mental hospital. (I don’t know why, but I have these really painful headaches, and side effects like hyperventilation, or fainting. It started a few years ago but the doctors couldn’t find anything wrong. They kept occurring though, at random times. It’s really annoying, but it hasn’t stopped. I don’t know why.)
The last I saw, Aidan was already at the bottom of the stairs, which were at least 8 steps away. So how did he get up here so fast?
He was still staring at me strangely, starting to look a bit annoyed. "I'm fine," I said quickly, casting around for something more reasonable than the truth. "Just... um... jet lag?"
Aidan stared at me for another second. Then he shrugged. "Whatever." He paused, and then picked up my suitcase before heading down the stairs again.
This boy was starting to confuse me more than a painter in an auto shop. Ok, that was a weird comparison.
"This all you have?" he asked when we reached the bottom of the stairs. I only brought a medium-sized suitcase and my duffel bag. It's not like I had ever stayed in one place long enough to own a lot anyway.
"Should I have more?" I asked.
He stayed quiet, and led me to my room. "Here," He said, dropping my suitcase in. I put down my bag and looked around. It was nice, had a bed, a dresser, a desk. There was a small closet too. I guess I could decorate the blank walls with some stuff.
"My room's across the hall," Aidan announced. "Don’t go in there."
I wasn’t going to, I thought, but kept it to myself. Didn’t need to worsen his mood. I followed him quietly as he showed me around the house. Then he disappeared in to his room and shut the door firmly. I shrugged, and unpacked until Sandra called us for dinner.Aidan's POV:
Whoa is me, I'm so whoa
See me decked out from my head to my toe
Whoa is me, I'm so whoa
Everywhere I go I'm a one man show!
I laid back on my bed as 'Whoa is me' by Down With Webster blared from my speakers. I'm waiting for the inevitable. Today was the day that girl came. Yay. (Note my sarcasm)
My few 'friends' have all gone somewhere for the summer and the others I only see if I make the mistake of walking down the darker streets at night. Which I only do if I'm high or desperate for a fight.
So I've been hanging around the house all summer, occasionally going out to waste time or crashing a party. (It's pretty funny to see all these half-drunk people wearing fancy clothes running out in the middle of the night screaming their heads off, and then passing out in their fancy cars, with no memory of what happened when they wake up with their hangovers.)
My parents obviously noticed me moping and suddenly decided to ruin my life by accepting some dumb program where we take in complete strangers from who-knows-where that'll be living here for who-knows-how-long. Ever since then, they’ve been all cheerful and excited, cleaning up the house (what's the point? She's not here for a visit; she'll see what it's like soon enough) and basically acting like this is the best thing that's happened since electricity was invented. Jeez.
And she's supposed to live across the hall from me. What if she's some slut or something? I can probably take care of myself, but I'm just saying, isn’t there some law against two teenagers of opposite sex living in close proximity with each other? Even if we were in separate bedrooms. Plus, we're expected to share the bathroom. It's small enough.
The doorbell rang, and I threw a pillow over my head. Crap, she's here.
:)
I stepped out into the hallway, just as my mother disappeared off into the kitchen, leaving the girl standing there. I took a deep breath as I walked closer. Her eyes widened a bit and I watched as she stared at me.
She didn’t look half-bad actually. Her sun streaked brown hair was tied back in a ponytail, her shirt showed off her curves, and she wore a few bracelets on one hand. Clearly, she was the kind of girl that made sure her clothes matched and everything. Or at least made an effort to look nice, but not over the top like some slut. She wore practically no makeup, and I can clearly see her lightning blue eyes that were both cautious and observant. She was pretty cute, but wouldn’t stand out in a crowd or anything.
She was still staring at me, so I snapped, "You done?" before I could stop myself. I felt a little bad when she looked up at me with hurt in her eyes. But it's better this way. I think. Because then she'd get fed up with me and leave. And the faster she left, the safer both she and I'd be.
She forced a smile. "Hi, you must be Aidan. I'm-----"
"Tiana, I know." I rolled my eyes. "As if my parents weren’t all, 'Tiana, the home stay girl that's going to stay with us..." I mocked her a little bit but she didn’t respond, just kinda stared at me. I turned, sighing, and led her to her room. Or, the basement.
I already reached the bottom step when I realized she had stopped. I looked back and she was standing still, her face scrunched up like she had a headache. Before I knew it, I'd rushed up next to her. She blinked and stared at me a bit confused.
"Why d'you stop?" I asked her. She didn’t answer, thinking hard. I was starting to get annoyed.
"I'm fine," she said quickly. "Just um... jet lag?"
I stared at her. I don’t know what her problem was, but if she didn't want to tell anyone, fine. I picked up her suitcase. "This all you have?" I asked her, looking at her suitcase and duffel bag.
"Should I have more?" she replied.
I didn't answer. My parents told me that she was an orphan and moved around a lot. Maybe that's why. "Here." I dropped her suitcase in her room and watched her look around. I gave her the tour then went back into my room, waiting for dinner.
Tiana wasn't that bad. Seemed like a nice girl and all, quiet and smart. She seemed guarded to me. I wonder what she's hiding. But then that's none of my business.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
