Kieran’s POV:
I knew something was up with Aidan and Tiana. Well, something more than the sexual tension between those two. And call me paranoid, but I was beginning to think it was more serious than regular teen drama/crisis. Never mind the fact that Aidan seemed more… I don’t know. Different. I wondered how I didn’t notice it before. Jeez, you’d think, having the parents I did, I’d be more observant and pick up a few more hints.
I let myself into my house, locking the door quietly. It was darker than night in here. And as silent too. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if some serial killer in a ski mask jumped out from the kitchen wielding a chainsaw. No wonder I never invited anyone over. This place could pass for a horror movie set.
“Mothertrucker,” I cursed under my breath as I tripped over a giant stuffed mushroom. I take that back. This place could pass for a horror scene if it weren’t for my mother’s strange obsession with stuffed… things. Not stuffed animals, or anything cute to cuddle, but weird inanimate objects like stuffed mushrooms and giant coca-cola models. Weird? Yeah, we passed that long ago.
I opened the fridge, checking for anything other than those metal cans of… well, I couldn’t drink that even if I wanted to. I’d just throw it right back up. Something about human digestive system. Picky, picky human intestines. Meh.
Deciding on the leftover burrito from last night’s takeout, I made my way up the stairs, already starting to plan my next move on Andrea. Thanks to Tiana’s prodding and helpful hints, I finally won her back… ish. She’s not trying to push me in front of a car every time I saw her, at least. Yay, progress.
“Kieran?”
I turned in the doorway to my room, burrito in my mouth. The door to their bedroom had opened a slight crack, and a slender woman with long black hair stepped out. She peered at me in the dimness.
“Hi, mom. Want a bite?” I offered her the plate.
“No, thanks, Kieran.” She shut the door behind her, where I could hear her husband snoring like a pickup truck starting in the winter.
“It’s still light out. Shouldn’t you still be sleeping?”
She smiled slightly at me, but I saw the lines tighten around her eyes. Something had happened. She’s worried.
“What’s wrong?” I lowered the burrito reluctantly.
She started to shake her head, but then sighed. “He passed last night. Or day, I guess. Too soon. His sons…” She rubbed her face tiredly. “I have a bad feeling. This world is already in a mess enough, but now…”
I knew exactly who she was talking about. Even though technically it had nothing to do with me, but then, they adopted me and raised me, so technically, it had to do with me no matter what I thought.
Great, now I was thinking in circles.
“Are you guys going back?” I asked her.
She shook her head. “I’m not sure. But we’re not going to leave you, Kieran. You know that.” She patted my shoulder.
