Tony didn't want anything to do with the man standing before him, he didn't want to talk or look at him. But when did Tony ever get what he wanted?
Steve stood there on the porch, persistently annoying as ever, he had the same dumb look on his face, Tony had seen it multiple times over the years. The face he made whenever he was about to spill out some long speech about teamwork.
"Tony, we need you for this. If we want to pull this off we need your help-"
Tony rolled his eyes as he put up his hand to make Steve stop.
"Steve. I can't help you. I can't risk losing what I have now. What you're asking of me, is insane."
Steve scoffed and nodded, breaking his eye contact with Tony. The last of the Avengers stood behind them, obviously disappointed with Tony's response. They turned to head back to the car until Steve spoke.
"Of course you wouldn't understand why we need to do this Stark. You didn't lose anyone during this but we did."
It felt like a slap to his face. Tony could feel his hands shake as the memories of Titan plagued his mind once again. They had no idea what he lost 5 years ago. How much it affected Tony's day to day life.
"I did lose someone, Rogers."
Steve turned to look at Tony, doubt as clear as day in his eyes.
"I lost my kid. You have no right to tell me that I don't understand. I had to watch my son turn to dust in my arms and I couldn't do anything to stop it. So yes Steve, I do understand. But I can't risk losing anyone else I care about, not again."
A tense silence fell over the group, Steve stared at Tony, his face unreadable. Tony felt like he was seconds away from breaking down or being sick. He hadn't talked about what happened on Titan in forever, but now he spilled it all out to man he trusted the least.
Steve opened his mouth to speak but his answer was delayed, he had no idea what to say.
"Tony, I'm sorry. I didn't know I-"
"Yeah I know," Tony interrupted as he walked towards the door of the cabin. "Just- please leave."
Steve hesitated but nodded. He glanced at Tony before turning and walking off the deck towards the car, the rest of the Avengers following behind him.
