Of all the years Tony had been alive and all the people who have lied to him he never thought his own husband would be one of those people. But there he was, looking into Steve's begging blue eyes while the clip of Tony's own parents being murdered was playing.
He was going to be sick. He could feel his hands shaking, the cold air nipping at his cheeks and the eyes of James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, the Winter Soldier, staring at him from behind Steve.
Steve lied to him. He lied about his parents and now he's protecting the very man who killed them.
"Tony-" before Steve could finish Tony cut him off by raising his hand and glaring at him. Steve stopped immediately waiting for his husband to say something, anything.
A beat of silence and Tony finally spoke.
"Why did you lie to me?" His voice was shakey and it took everything in him to not cry on the spot.
Steve stared at him, looked him in the eyes as he tried to form an answer for the man he loved. He opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out. He sighed finally looking away from Tony.
"I…don't know. I just- Bucky he-" he took a deep breath and looked him in the eyes once more. "Bucky needs me Tony, I thought he was dead and now, now he's back. I had to keep him safe."
Tony turned away from him, he couldn't look Steve in the eyes any longer. Bucky needs me Tony. I need you.
Steve gently placed his hand on Tony's arm. "I'm sorry Tony. I'm so sorry."
Steve was on the verge of tears as well. He couldn't believe he lied to Tony, he regretted it and now he knew for sure there was no going back from this, there was no fixing this. His marriage was falling apart infront of his very eyes and it was his fault. Finally Tony looked at him and Steve felt his heart break into a million pieces all over again. His cheeks were stained from tears, he glared at Steve, not daring to say a word.
Steve knew he was taking a risk at the very moment by saying three words to Tony, but he had to let him know. Steve had to let Tony know he still loved him.
"I love you, Tony."
Tony closed his eyes, taking another deep breath, he opened his eyes and after a beat of silence he said "I love you too, but I shouldn't have married you."
Steve felt like he had been punched in the face. For what felt like the millionth time Steve's heart broke.
I shouldn't have married you.
The words echoed through his head as he watched Tony back away from him. The echo got louder while he watched his husband active the Ironman suit and now, the echo turned into a scream while he watched the love of his life leave.

Funny enough I was Steve but specifically from Captain America: The winter soldier. I looked pretty cool last night 😎 yup pretty badass
Also I want to mention again, I might have to make a new book for one-shots cuz I think this one is reaching its max limit 🌝 which is scary but ig cool cuz I've been working on this book specifically for a long time lol anyway I hope when that does happen y'all will happily just slide on over and enjoy some hopefully new one-shots because I am still working on rewriting and making new fics as well as some one shots <3
