A month later
The wedding has started as Polly checks her watch to see if anyone else is going to show up. It is already bad enough that John's sister isn't going to be there, but Gia too? Polly was a fool to even have asked.
"Why are you checking your watch every two seconds? It's like you're the one getting married." Tommy looks down at his aunt. "It doesn't matter. Just keep on watching." She answers shortly.
Out of nowhere, Gia appears with a very pregnant Ada linked to her arm. Gia couldn't understand how someone could miss a relative's marriage just because they were stubborn, so she pulled some strings. Not that it was hard for Gia.
Arthur sees the two women and tries to get Tommy's attention by slapping the back of his hand on his bicep. Which makes Tommy growl at his childish brother.
It is only when Arthur motions for Tommy to look behind him that he turns his head around. That's when he sees a well-dressed Gia, his Gia, and, of course, his heavily pregnant sister, standing a couple of meters away from them.
You can't really miss her, as she is ready to pop. As the pair walks closer and finally comes to a final stop, Ada doesn't even think about looking at Tommy and directly takes her aunt's arm.
That's why the only open space is next to Tommy, not that Gia minds. "You look good." Tommy whispers as he moves his head to look up at the ceremony. 'Good' is a lousy way to describe me. Gia rolls her eyes with a soft smile playing on her lips.
Unlike Ada, Tommy does give his sister a welcoming smile. Which Gia takes as a sign to exchange places with the woman. "You came." Tommy lowers his voice.
"Gia said there is a truce." Ada answers with a menacing tone, which reminds Gia of Tommy. "Family day." Tommy's corners of his mouth are slightly up. "Your husband didn't make it." Tommy speaks out in the open air.
Gia sighed to herself. Tommy has this habit of making everything serious. Which they, obviously, aren't in the right place for, but that's what Tommy wants.
Gia loves her family. It is her strength and the reason to keep going. Of course, there are quarrels in her family, but isn't that normal? Even though she must admit it, they haven't been on the best note lately.
Gia gets brought back to the marriage as John kisses his wife. She hears Tommy mumble. "A Thorn in my side, that's for sure." As he suddenly smiles widely.
"You admire him, don't you?" His sister starts to smile, too. The only response she gets is a side glan, which is enough of a response.
Gia lets the air from her cigarette fill her lungs and escape via her mouth. She admires the beautiful man Tommy Shelby is. He's sitting high and proud on his chair, as if it's his throne.
A big difference to Gia, whos standing in the darkness of a vardo, looking at the people dance and have fun. Until she sees a smaller man approaching her in the corner of her eye, Johnny Dogs.
"Hi, love, enjoying yourself?" He smiles as he puts his hand in his pockets. The man must be between forty and fifty years old. "I am, but I think Ada is enjoying herself a little more." Gia laughs as they both look at the pregnant woman, dancing her limbs off her body.
"The poor woman." Johnny sighs as he recalls what Tommy said about her living in a basement. "My poor eyes." Gia mumbls as she gets second-hand embarrassment from Ada. When finally her gaze falls back on Tommy.
She watches the smoke from his cigarette come out of his nose. Johnny seems fully aware of who she is thinking about, even if she only looked at him for a couple of seconds.
"I've seen it, ya know." He tells her as he too starts to look at Tommy. "What are you talking' about?" Gia sighs, not too interested in his response.
"I had a dream. I saw you and Tommy in a big house, portraits on the walls, horses in the back yard, kids runnin' around, and..." He stops talking as if he's scared to reveal his burden, the true dark part of the dream.
"Then what?" She asks him, looking him right in the eyes. "Complete darkness." He whispers as if he couldn't choose between being shocked or amazed.
And just for one second, her heart wants to make her believe in this dream, but she turns back around and assures him. "As you said, it was just a dream." Her eyes falling back on Tommy.
As though God had heard her, Johnny excuses himself from the silent conversation and goes to help with the just-married couple's gifts. Leaving her to fend for herself in a crowd of people she doesn't know.
The Italian-Amerikan woman downs a glass filled with a questionable capacity. The adrenaline goes through her body, from the tip of her tongue to the very ends of the hairs on her arms, making them stand.
The normally very calculated Gia makes a repulsive decision for the first and last time in her life and walks over to him.
A shadow stands in front of the light that was shining on his face only a second ago. "Gia." He greets her after looking up. "Thomas." She greets back. "How are you finding the celebration?" He asks once she has made herself comfortable in the chair next to his.
"Pleasant." Gia smiles as she looks over the newlywed pair. "Isn't it beautiful?" She tells him. "What is?" He turns his head to look at her.
"The promise to love." She keeps on looking at the couple with a sparkle in her eye that wasn't there before. His eyes stay focused on her side profile as he whispers. "It is."
"But promises can break." he tells her after turning his head back to his brother. This makes Gia look at him before explaining. "An invaluable promise can be broken, but love never breaks. It's what gives people hope."
"Hope is a dangerous thing to have. That's why it's better to not have it." He explains. "I disagree. If you don't have hope, then what will keep you driven to change?" She asks him.
"Some people don't want to change." His voice gives off a small hint of sadness. "Some people are scared of what they will become once they change." He gets it as an answer.
In this moment, he feels as if there might be a possibility for love in his dead heart, and the very thought of that scares the hell out of him.
