As the streets lightly cleaned out of people as everyone was eating their lunch, Gia was found to be wondering it. The normally, very busy Birmingham looked estranged. They walked into an obscure looking pub. The men up front all got quiet as they saw them walk through the doors.
Gia walked up to the bar and asked the barman, "Do you know where I can find Jessie Eden?" She swore she saw the underlip of the man shiver as she had walked up to him. She sighed loudly "Pick up your jaw and talk." He nodded and pointed to the back of the pub.
Indeed, as Gia shooed the man out of the way, she saw at the very back in a darker corner a group of women sitting at a table. She looked back at Polly. "Right, fuck off." The men around her practically ran, but the others waited for a second to be sure they heard her right. Gia turned around and looked at the barman.
"Don't you want me to serve you drinks?" He questioned her as he threw a towel over his shoulder. "Do I look so stupid to you that I can't make my own drinks?" Gia answered. With one swift move, he threw the towel on the bar and disappeared into the back. She felt Polly put her hand on her back to lead her to the table the other women were sitting at.
Esme had already sat herself down next to other women and started a casual conversation. The women around her looked a little scared at first but would surely accept Esme's open soul. Gia took the only place left, the one to Jessie Eden. As she placed herself on the chair, she got a welcoming smile from Jessie.
As the other women talked about their experiences, Gia and Jessie looked over the table. Gia had heard the woman open her mouth once or twice to talk, but not one word came out of her mouth. For the first time in Jessie's life, she felt like she was running out of words even though she hadn't spoken yet.
Without moving her head, Gia said, "Do speak, dear." Jessie wasn't a woman who was taken back by power, or a big mouth but she did feel impressed about having Gia next to her. Gia was, kind of, a symbol for women. She spoke when she desired and not when spoken to, She smiled at who she wanted and not when she got smiled at, but most importantly, her workers had an equal paycheck, and she was the founder of 'Women in need' or 'WIN'.
Women in need was an organisation who received women who had lost something because of the war. These women came in large numbers running to her for things as money, work, education, a roof above their head, medical examinations, and etcetera.
"I have great respect for you and your work in parity. But I had made a reservation, which was cancelled. Forgive me, but I'm a bit surprised by your attendance." She made eye contact with Gia. "Well, then forgive me too for being occupied by a private matter. I'll make sure to tell my secretary to look out for the name Eden. You know, I've had my fair share of men thinking they're superior, which is why I came here. We shouldn't turn on each other too." She politely smiled.
"Then I'm sure you'll love this." Jesse placed her hand on Gia's shoulder as she stood up and gave a ten-minute speech. Gia's eyes were piercing through Jessie's side profile. Jessie didn't know if she should be proud or intimidated. As the speech got to an end, all women stood up. Even Polly was the life of the party as she stood upon a chair and yelled.
Gia stayed seated and made eye contact with Jessie. She was smart, and Gia was aware of it. Gia stood up, and as the sound of the women clapping diminished, she was the only one left clapping. Esme picked up a glass of champagne and yelled, "To us." Gia looked over at Esme and took her glass, and drank from it.
