Her clammy hands go up and down her thighs. She hopes it will stop soon. That the only visible sign that she's not one hundred percent sure of herself goes away.
Whatever is about to happen can go just as planned or can lead to her ending moment. The car bobbing on the road is a constant reminder of how close she is to heading to her possible death.
She and Mario have left around four-thirty am, before there were people on the road and before the first early birds could sing their melody to start the day.
The fog is insinuating that it could be one of the first sunny spring days, but Gia isn't sure she will be able to even see the sun even rise.
The aching feeling of leaving her child and Tommy alone, behind. Both looked so peaceful when sleeping. She knows he will be so hurt if something happened to her, that's why he's aware of nothing.
A part of her feels terrible for not waking Tommy or telling him about the deal she will close with the Capone family. But she knew he would stop her if he heard of the dangers she would face that very morning.
'Capone' is a name that scares the common people as much, if not more, than the name 'Changretta'.
Gia isn't afraid to look danger right in the eye, God knows she had to do it more than once. She's more of a proactive kind of person, or that's what she thinks, at least.
But there is something about him that makes her rethink this whole operation. Maybe it's the stories she heard, or maybe it's the fact that there is someone out there who many haven't been able to beat.
Her father used to remind her all the time, 'Big fucks small'. If you can't beat your enemy, find the person who can. And the only person Gia could think of was him, the great Al Capone.
He's the only person to who Luca wouldn't turn to even if it was his only way to survive. Albert and Luca fought together in the war, and just like Tommy, they both lost their smiles in the first biggest man-made catastrophe of the 20th century.
Mario stops the car but keeps looking at the building they both will disappear in. A shaky breath leaves his lips as he's tempted to just keep on driving.
Gia sighs a shaky breath, "Let's get this over with." She opens the door and puts her heel on the ground. Her 5-inch heels make a loud sound as they make their way to the building.
Once they stand in front of the door, it opens to reveal a tall man. Mario stands tall at 6 feet 1, just about an inch or two smaller than her brothers.
But this man is easily a head bigger than Mario. This doesn't face Gia in any way though. She knows that the real danger is inside of the building.
The guard looks at their long vests to initiate them to open their vest. Mario opens his long vest to show a fine suit. He goes into the jacket that matches his dress pants and pulls out two guns which he passes over to the man.
Gia opens her long vest to show an even finer suit than her cousin's. She takes two guns out of her holster and gives them over.
Before the man can step out of the way to let them pass, he sees her hand slip back into her vest. Gia takes out a knife out of a pocket inside of her vest and another one out of her sleeve.
She gives them over and looks up with an effortless smile. The man steps out of the way, and she walks as the first one inside.
Gia is met by high ceilings and light colours on the walls, a clear ground and a beautiful chandelier.
"Beautiful isn't it?" She hears a deep voice say. There's no need for her to aline her eyesight with him as she already knows who it is. "I've seen better." She answers before looking back at him, Al Capone.
"I'm sure you have." He laughs. "But you're not here to talk about infrastructure." He gets serious again. He moves out of the way and wises at the stairs behind him with an open hand.
Mario walks before her and up the stairs. Once they are upstairs, he leads the way to his office. They all sit down in silence.
"Let me guess why you're here." Al starts without seeing the importance of the situation in Gia's eyes. "You have nothing anymore and need protection, which you hope to get here." He grins disturbingly.
"Actually, Mr Capone, I'm here for you." Gia explains very calmly and professional. "For me? Honey, I would like for you to take a look around and tell me what you see." He asks her.
Gia looks up with a sigh. "I see a big office." She responds curtly. "Imma need you to be more detailed." His accent rolls off his tongue. Gia looks at Mario with a look on her face which shows that she's already sick and tired of this man.
"I see a bookcase. I see little golden statues on the windowsill. I see a window that looks out on the people working in the factory." Gia looks around.
"What you see is success. Money if you will." He stops her from looking around. "Quello che vedo sono i soldi di papà." Mario says his first words in the meeting.
Al has Italian roots but can't speak fluent Italian, which Mario oubviously takes to his advantage. "Now, why would a man like me need help from..." He looks her up and down. "A woman like you?" He questions her.
"Because I have something you don't. I have the power of the people, and we both know that you can't force public opinion-" Gia starts saying the speech she practised.
"Now, why would I need the public's opinion?" He cuts her short. "If you let me finish my sentence, you would have already known." Gia doesn't waste her breath and answers directly.
"Because I own the cop to this city, My name is on 65% of the bars and restaurants. If I take away those things from the public, they will react. And if I say they won't get it back until I have your head. Then they will give it to me." Gia threatens.
"You dare to threaten me when you're name is not even Changretta anymore." Al looks more impressed than uncomfy.
"My maiden name is, and always will be, Changretta. You know that I'm capable of doing such things, Mr Capone." Gia's voice gets low and vicious. "Would I accept this inconvenience, what would I have to do?" He thought long before he spoke up again.
"I can't always be in New York. I have made myself a life back in Birmingham. If you could lead my operation here in New York, with some benefits for you, then I won't be doing any wrongdoings." She explains shortly. Gia can hear someone breathing louder from the stress, but who it is, she isn't too sure.
Gia has just broken the news of his social and business ruin, but his body language doesn't change one bit. "Right, what would I be doing here?" He asks with obviously a lot of thoughts going around in his head.
"You would be the law of this city. Every possibility would be at your fingertips." Gia sells him on the idea.
"What would I win if this situation occurs?" He asks after some quiet. "You'll get 20 per cent of total winnings and savings every month." Gia informs him.
"Which is about 648 729$." Mario adds. "I would be losing money." He says loudly. "Let's be honest, not that much money and you don't have to say you work for me. The opportunities that will arise, are some you can't get while doing this business." Gia comments.
"What is the catch?" He asks. "You have to ruin my brother." She answers.
When that sentence leaves her lips, he looks up from the ground and into her piercing eyes. It isn't a secret that the siblings don't work well together but he can't believe it has gotten this far out of hand.
"And what fool would put himself in-between siblings? In a week everything will be fine." The words leave his lips quickly. "Because you have my word. I want him gone." She answers slowly.
"What is the devil planning in that great brain of yours?" He asks her and the more he looks at her the more he sees the actual devil and her dad.
"Hell." She answers. "Do we have a deal?" Mario asks which brings Al back into the conversation. "We do." He answers.
