Her clammy hands went up and down her thigh. She was hoping to get rid of the only visible sign that she was not one hundred percent sure of herself. Whatever was about to happen could go just as planned or could lead to her ending moment. The car bobbing on the road were constant reminders of how close she was heading to her possible death.
She and Mario had left around four-thirty am before there were people on the road and before the first early birds could sing their melody to start the day. The fog was insinuating that it could be one of the first sunny spring days, but Gia wasn't sure she would be able to see the sun even rise.
She felt terrible for leaving her child and Tommy alone behind. Both looked so peaceful when sleeping. She knew he would be so hurt if something happened to her, and he had no idea of the location. A part of her felt terrible for not waking Tommy or telling him about the deal she would close with the Capone family. But for she knew he would stop her if he heard of the dangers she would face that very morning.
'Capone' is a name that scares the common people as much, if not more, than the name 'Changretta'. Gia doesn't have a cowardly persona. She is more of the proactive kind, or that's what she thinks, at least. But there is something about him that made her rethink this whole operation. Maybe it's the stories she heard, or maybe it's the fact that there is someone out there who she hasn't been able to beat.
Her father used to remind her all the time, 'Big fucks small'. If you can't beat your enemy, find the person who can. And the only person Gia could think of was him, the great Al Capone. He's the only person to who Luca wouldn't turn to even if it was his only way to survive. Albert and Luca fought together in the war, and just like Tommy, they both lost their smiles in the first biggest man-made catastrophe of the 20th century.
Mario stopped the car but kept looking at the building they both would disappear in. A shaky breath left his lips as he was tempted to just keep on driving. Gia sighed, "Let's get this over with." She opened the door and put her heel on the ground. Her 5-inch heels made a loud sound as they made their way to the building.
Once they stood in front of the door, it opened to reveal a tall man. Mario stood tall at 6 feet 2, just about an inch or two smaller than her brothers. But this man was easily a head bigger than Mario. This didn't face Gia in any way though. She knows that the real danger inside of the building is.
The guard looked at their long vests to initiate them to open their vest. Mario opened his long vest to show a fine suit. He went into the jacket that matched his dress pants and pulled out two guns which he passed over to the man. Gia opened her long vest to show an even finer suit than her cousin's. She took two guns out of her holster and gave them over.
Before the man could step out of the way to let them pass he saw her hand slip back into her vest. Gia took a knife out of a pocket inside of her vest and another one out of her sleeve. She gave them over and looked up with an effortless smile. The man stepped out of the way, and she walked as the first one inside.
She was met by high ceilings and light colours on the walls, clear ground and a beautiful chandelier. "Beautiful isn't it?" She heard a manly voice say. There was no need for her to aline her eyesight with him as she already knows who it is. "I've seen better." She answeres before looking back at him, Al Capone.
"I'm sure you have." He laughs. "But you're not here to talk about infrastructure." He got serious again. He moved out of the way and wised at the stairs behind him. Mario walked before her and up the stairs. Once they were upstairs, he led the way to his office. They all sat down in silence.
"Let me guess why you're here." Al started without seeing the importance of the situation in Gia's eyes. "You have nothing anymore and need protection which you hope to get here." He grinned disturbingly. "Actually, Mr Capone, I'm here for you." Gia explained very calmly and professional.
"For me? Honey, I would like for you to take a look around and tell me what you see." He told her. Gia looked up with a sigh. "I see a big office." She responded curtly. "Imma need you to be more detailed." His accent rolled off his tongue. Gia looked at Mario with a look on her face which showed that she was already sick and tired of this man.
"I see a bookcase. I see little golden statues on the windowsill. I see a window that looks out on the people working in the factory." Gia looked around. "What you see is success. Money if you will." He stopped her from looking around. "Quello che vedo sono i soldi di papà." Mario said his first words in the meeting.
Al had Italian roots but couldn't speak fluent Italian, which Mario took to his advantage. "Now, why would a man like me need help from..." He looked her up and down. "A woman like you?" He questioned her. "Because I have something you don't. I have the power of the people, and we both know that you can't force public opinion-" Gia started saying.
"Now, why would I need the public's opinion?" He cut her short. "If you let me finish my sentence, you would have already known." Gia didn't waste her breath and answered directly. "Because I own the cop to this city, My name is on 65% of the bars and restaurants. If I take away those things from the public, they will react. And if I say they won't get it back until I have your head. Then they will give it to me." Gia threatened.
"You dare to threaten me when you're name is not even Changretta anymore." Al looked uncomfy. "My maiden name is, and always will be, Changretta. You know that I'm capable of doing such things, Mr Capone." Gia's voice got low and vicious. "Would I accept this inconvenience, what would I have to do?" He thought long before he spoke up again.
"I can't always be in New York. I have made myself a life back in Birmingham. If you could lead my operation here in New York, with some benefits for you, then I won't be doing any wrongdoings." She explained shortly. Gia could hear someone breathing louder from the stress, but who it was, she wasn't too sure.
Gia had just broken the news of his social and business ruin, but his body language didn't change one bit. "Right, what would I be doing here?" He asked with obviously a lot of thoughts going around in his head. "You would be the law of this city. Every possibility would be at your fingertips." Gia sold him on the idea.
"What would I win if this situation occurs?" He asked. "You'll get 20 per cent of total winnings and savings every month." Gia informed him. "Which is about 648 729$." Mario added. "I would be losing money." He thought loudly. "Let's be honest, not that much money and you don't have to say you work for me." Gia commented.
"What is the catch?" He asked. "You have to ruin my brother." She answered. When that sentence left her lips he looked up from the ground and into her piercing eyes. It wasn't a secret that the siblings didn't work well together but he couldn't believe it had gotten this far out of hand.
"What is the devil planning in that great brain of yours?" He asked her and the more he looked at her the more he saw the actual devil and her dad. "Hell." She answered. "Do we have a deal?" Mario asked which brought Al back into the conversation. "We do." He answered.
