James stepped back, taking a small second to admire his handiwork. He had almost finished his section, although it had taken a bit longer than he had planned due to his mind constantly drifting.
He hoped Bellamy was okay. By the sounds, the grounders hadn't arrived yet, but he knew they were close. It was only a matter of time.
He refused to think about the lingering blood on his boot from where he had attempted at wiping it away from the floor as best he could - so Monty and Clarke, being down in the bottom of the dropship with him, didn't see it.
Just as he was getting back to work, gunshots sounded, making him stand straight up and alert.
"What's happening out there?" He cried out to Clarke, who was a few ways down working on a much smaller part - knowing if he left his post, they might not finish, but also scared for the lives of the people he cared for.
"I don't know!" She called back, sounding equally frightened.
More gunshots went off, one after another, and James put all the focus he could into the work, gritting his teeth as his hands wouldn't stop shaking.
He could faintly hear the feedback from the walkie-talkie Clarke had, the panicked yet determined shouts. His mind sorted out the distant voices one by one until he found the right one.
Gradually his hands stopped shaking as Bellamy kept shouting orders; every sentence was another second he was alive. When he finished his work, he moved on to another section that needed repair.
If he could fix the dropship with the others, then he could save Bellamy, save Octavia, save Clarke, save Raven. What happened to him didn't matter anymore as long as they were safe.
"Did you find it?" Raven shouted down, jolting James out of his trance as he connected one of the last wires.
"No! It's a mess down here." Clarke yelled back.
"It'll be orange! Look harder! You have to find the wire that connects to the manual override's electromagnet."
After a pause, she continued. "It's not rocket science."
"It is rocket science."
He cracked a small smile, moving closer to where Clarke was searching. He was going to miss this. No matter how much stuff James had gone through, there had been good times, fun times. He had gotten better, relearned how to be happy.
Just as he was about to help Clarke, he felt the now familiar bile coming up his throat, almost choking as he realized. If they saw, he knew they would try to help. They didn't have enough time for that.
He quickly dashed to the ladder, climbing up as he bit his lip to stop the cry of pain from his leg and running to the side of the dropship - ignoring confused shouts from his friends - before falling to his knees and throwing up. It was considerably worst than the first two times, exhaustion taking over his body as he grabbed a nearby ledge and tried to pull himself back up to his feet.
James didn't even want to look down at the disgusting mixture on the ground; he had seen enough of his own blood in his lifetime.
He turned away, weakly limping back into the metal structure. Raven looked like she wanted to ask him a million things, but what she said wasn't what he expected.
"Can you splice a wire?"
He shook his head slowly, watching as her expression slowly fell.
"But Jasper can." He added on.
