COUNTLESS DAYS OF waiting for any new arrivals to Narnia turned into weeks, later to months, and after a thousand of wasted days, it had passed a year. Diana was disappointed to say the least, since she was dreading the start of the new school year more than ever.
A loud honk of a car engine distracted both her and Lucy, holding on to each other's hand, as they crossed the street; and the man from the car peaked out of the window to speak out.
"Mind yourselves, loves," the man said.
"Sorry!" Diana winced in apology and tugged on Lucy's hand again, crossing over the large street of the city.
Both girls searched over the sidewalk filled with thousands of people swarming in from the stores and buildings, trying to spot their sister in her bright red uniform between the clouds of grey and black coats.
Diana found her sister over a stand of books, where she held a newspaper in her hand, but something strange was that she seemed to have company; a boy with a yellow and black scarf and matching tie smiling at her with a glint of curiosity.
"Susan!" Diana called to her sister and she turned over to the sound of the voice instantly, but the smile on the boy's face had disappeared.
"You better come quickly!" Lucy added with desperation and Susan dropped the newspaper in her hand as she followed behind her sisters.
The three ran across the street all over again and stepped into the underground train station, searching for the cause of their worry. Loud screams and chants of children all piled up in the side of the stairs was what caught Diana's attention, and she, Susan and Lucy pushed through the crowd to get a better look.
Diana got to see the faint figure of her young brother Peter being thrown over the floor and picked up by two boys in a similar uniform. Peter looked up from his gaze on the floor and his expression changed into one of shame when he caught his older sister's eyes.
Before Diana could take another step or even interrupt the fight, another familiar person walked straight past her, and she barely had time to register when she noticed the locks of black hair crashing into the boys that were holding Peter down.
"Edmund!"
Edmund had crashed one of the boys to the ground and aimed a punch at his face, while at the same time the other held Peter down to the floor and got him closer to the edges of the railroad. The shouts of encouragement of the crowd had intensified by this actions.
