THE FROZEN RIVER they were supposed to cross was defrosting minute by minute, big pieces of the ice were already floating away into the distance. Diana stared at it in frustration and tried to think of a solution.

"We need to cross, now!" exclaimed Peter.

"Don't beavers make dams?" Lucy turned to the animals.

"I'm not that fast, dear," said Mr. Beaver.

"Come on!" Peter tugged on Lucy's arm to pull her away.

"Wait!" Susan yelled, making her brother to stop. "Will you think about this for a minute?"

"We don't have a minute!" Peter bit back.

"I'm just trying to be realistic," Susan frowned at his cold attitude.

"No, you're trying to be smart. As usual," Peter rolled his eyes.

Diana looked between her brother and sister, ready to intervene when the familiar howling of the wolves came back, the sound already coming from a close place. Susan and Diana didn't hesitate to follow after the others without looking back.

After the group had safely made it to the lower ground, where the river was defrosting, Diana's worries intensified when she saw how the last piece of ice was already falling apart.

Peter tried to press his foot against it, trying to see how resistant it was, when the part sank down to the freezing water, alerting the others.

"Wait. Maybe I should go first," Mr. Beaver suggested.

"Maybe you should," Peter muttered in fear.

Mr. Beaver climbed into the big piece of ice and walked backwards, using his tail in a way to test how resistant was the rest of the ice.

"You've been sneaking second helpings, haven't you?" Mrs. Beaver suddenly accused.

"Well, you never know which meal's gonna be your last," excused Mr. Beaver. "Especially with your cooking."

Diana took this opportunity to finally step into the defrosting ice, sighing in relief when the ice didn't crumble under her weight, only causing a few cracks. She turned around and extended her hand over to Lucy and pulled her in, Peter and Susan following behind.

"If Mum knew what we were doing — " Susan muttered.

"Mum's not here," said Peter in annoyance.
