THE SUN CLAIMED its place in the sky after having disappeared behind the curtains of a storm, warming everything its rays could reach. Diana closed her eyes to allow her skin to absorb all the sunlight, almost forgetting what it felt like after spending so much time shivering from how the rain soaked her clothes. The ocean was peacefully calm as well, the waves falling back into their natural rhythm, and she could see how it glistened underneath the sun's blinding light. She leaned her forearms against the railing of the ship, giving her back to the crew that moved back and forth in order to finish their duties. Everyone was startled to see her walk through the deck in such early hours of the day, but they weren't brave enough to question why. They simply stared in surprise until Captain Drinian walked out and ushered for them to continue their job with a booming yell.
The nightmare from the night before still had Diana shaken to her core, and that was the primary reason why she was awake before anyone else in her chamber. She wanted this peace and tranquility to think through it, and there was no better place to do that other than out on the deck with the ocean in front of her. Her mind kept repeating that sequence in which she could see her older self, wrinkled and weakened, and a chill ran down her spine as her words rang through her head again. Was she truly destined to grow into that woman if she didn't do anything about it?
"You're up quite early."
Diana's train of thought halted at the sound of a familiar voice, turning her head towards the sound to see Caspian approaching her with his classic grin. His hair was blown back by the wind, loose strands of hair falling in between his eyes that Diana found uniquely endearing. She noticed that he was wearing the same clothes he wore yesterday, which gave her the hint that they were also used as a nightgown.
"Couldn't sleep," Diana answered, as Caspian joined her side. She turned her head back toward its original position and stared ahead into the ocean. "I figured it would be better to be out here instead of tossing and turning in bed."
"That makes sense." He mimicked her stance, although he was glancing back and forth between her and the ocean. "I didn't have a lovely sleep either."
Diana redirected her gaze to him, eyebrows furrowed in concern. "Want to talk about it?"
"It was nothing out of the ordinary," he admitted with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "My father, and you know. . ."
Diana nodded in a silent way to tell him that she understood. It had been a year or so since it happened, but she could still vividly remember when she found out, along with him, what Caspian's uncle did to his father. In an act to comfort him, Diana moved inches closer to Caspian, to the point where their arms were pressed together. If the deck hadn't been swarmed with dozens of crewmen yelling and loudly dragging stuff around, she could've heard how his breath hitched at the action.
