DIANA WAS NEVER one to say she detested the idea of having to do the groceries, especially when she had her two youngest siblings to back her up, until the two girls found out that their brother had gone off without them, searching for him in the one place they knew he would be.
Lucy was carrying the bags while Diana held the heavy boxes in between her hands, leaning her weight on one foot as they entered the enlisting area, spotting her younger brother right away.
Edmund wasn't that young anyway, he'd grown a few inches taller over the course of the months, to the point where he was even taller than Diana, much to the girl's dismay. His voice had gotten deeper too, not being the helpless boy anymore.
She cleared her throat loudly and gave him a smirk. "Edmund, you're supposed to be helping Lu and I with the groceries."
All the other men in the line chuckled and shared their laughs, the soldier holding Edmund's paper handing it back to him with a disappointing glance as Edmund's shoulders dropped.
The man closest to him ruffled his head teasingly and laughed. "Better luck next time, eh, squirt?"
Diana watched as Edmund joined her and Lucy's side while the three made their way towards the door, the oldest stopping death in her tracks the moment she gave her back against the men, receiving wolf-whistles and cat-calls.
"Pigs," Diana rolled her eyes, grabbing Edmund's jacket to stop him from giving those men a piece of his mind. She appreciated the gesture, but it wasn't the right moment to do so.
Diana, Edmund and Lucy all walked to the outside of the building and walked through the bushes, passing more people who were trying to enlist for the war too.
"Squirt?" Edmund decided to speak up. "He barely had two years on me."
Edmund took the heavy box out of Diana's hands and walked ahead of her and Lucy, continuing his annoyed ramble that the girls weren't too interested in hearing about.
"I'm a king," he complained. "I've fought wars, and. . .and I've led armies."
He placed the heavy wooden box in the back of the small bicycle while Lucy placed the bag on the front basket, tying it up to make sure it was secure.
"Not in this world," she said.
"Yeah. Instead, I'm stuck here doing battle with Eustace Clarence Scrubb," Edmund continued. "If anyone so deserved a name."
