3rd Person
One night, after many horrifying dreams and nightmares about the killing game, Kaede Akamatsu was able to get a full 4 hours of rest.
Until she couldn't.
She woke up groggily, staring out the curtain covered windows. It wasn't like it mattered, given that whenever she looked out a window, it'd just be a black screen anyways.
She stood up and yawned, albeit the warning feeling in her chest was waking her up wicking enough. Walking over to the open door of her room, she thought how insane it was to even be in a room of her own. The one in the killing game didn't feel like her own, so she just crossed it out of her mind.
The kitchen lights were open, and Kaede stopped walking for a bit to get used to the light, before fully walking in.
On the taller, more sturdier seat(specifically made for Gonta), Gonta himself was on the chair, holding a...
What..?
Kaede rubbed her eyes, and looked back at him. There he was, holding an iPad, and on the...Duolingo app?
She vaguely remembered using the app to try and quickly learn Korean before she had to fly to Korea for her sister's graduation. It didn't help as much as she wanted it to, considering her ADHD distracted her every time she had a good chance, but she was able to see her twin again, and spend quality time with her, so it was nice.
Snapping back to the present, she realized that Gonta was attempting to learn Japanese. She saw his point, considering how he spoke the language as much as she did, yet couldn't speak it well enough.
"Gonta? Why are you up so early?" Kaede asked, rubbing her eyes.
"Oh! Sorry, did I wake up Akamatsu-san?" Gonta asked.
Kaede blinked a bit, realizing that he used a proper pronoun, and laughed.
"Gonta! You've gotten better at Japanese!" She said, happy for him.
Gonta smiled happily, and continued playing around on his app.
Kaede walked around the kitchen, cleaning a few things up from when Kaito and Ryoma stayed up last night trying to bake cupcakes.
She remembered that Tsumugi had asked her to pre-fill a glass of water in her and Angie's shared art room, so she did just that, before heading back to the kitchen.
Looking at the time, she noticed that it was still 4, and she still had time to spare. She decided to use that spare time on Gonta.
"Gonta? Are you okay?" She asked, placing a hand on his head as she looked over his shoulder.
The iPad he was using had 3 percent, and she honestly felt shocked to see it fall dead in front of her eyes. She'd always kept well-charged devices, so she had never had the out of battery screen so blatantly shoved in her face before.
"Gonta keep getting 10 battery and 5 battery and it keep getting lower and lower and Gonta don't know what he doing wrong!
The pianist noticed how his grammar had reverted back to the less than punctual one, before realizing that he was probably too panicked about destroying one of his friends' prized possessions within 3 hours of owning it.
Kaede sighed heavily, and asked him to follow her. Off they went into her surprisingly large room, where Kaede pulled a charger out from the bottom of her desk.
"Gonta, pass the iPad over here, will you?" She asked in her carefree voice.
He handed the device over sniffling a bit. Kaede comforted him to the best of her abilities.
"Gonta, it's okay! It's not broken, it's just dead!" She tried to reassure him.
He just looked even more sad, and his sniffles were breaking her heart at this point.
"K-kill no better!" He wailed.
Kaede thanked Kami once. ONCE. That the rooms were soundproof, and she had shut her door.
"U-uhm!" Kaede stammered, suddenly out of ideas.
"What she means, is that it died, but unlike us, it can come back to life, better than ever." A deep voice at the doorway interrupted Gonta's sobs.
"Oh goodness, thank you, Hoshi-k-...wait...how...did you know to come in here...?" Kaede asked suspiciously.
"These rooms aren't as soundproof as you think, since the doors are still normal. You're lucky that his cries only travelled to my room. Atua knows what would happen if everyone heard him crying at 5 in the morning.
Kaede took a quick glance at her watch, and realized that Hoshi was right. It was her day to prepare breakfast for everyone.
"I'm gonna make that american breakfast today! It's french toast, but Miu keeps telling me it's american, so..."
"It's french. Iruma doesn't know anything if she thinks it's american. Traces of it were found back in ancient Rome and 17th century England, so I wouldn't be surprised if she mistook it for those, but it being American would be ironic considering its name, don't you think?" Ryoma raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah...but why does Miu think it's from America?" Kaede asked.
"Remember how she said she spent a few years in America for an internship? She probably picked up some bad habits and false information there, as well. Wouldn't put it past the Americans, anyways." Ryoma huffed.
"...Yeah, okay. I can't fight with that..." Kaede chuckled, tugging on her nightgown sheepishly.
"WHat's Gonta doing...?" Ryoma suddenly asked, finally recognizing the painful silence that was filling the room without him and Kaede's conversation.
"Oh! He's on Duolingo, trying to learn how to speak better Japanese! What about it?" Kaede chirped.
The short tennis player paled, and backed out of the room. The optimistic girl winced as she heard a door quietly close on the left of her room.
"Gonta? Can I leave you alone here for now?" Kaede asked quietly, ready to go and prepare th4e ingredients.
Gonta looked up, smiled, and nodded. Kaede returned the same warm-hearted smile, and walked out to the kitchen.
When she opened the fridge, she was surprised to see everything labeled with a small piece of paper in Gonta's messy handwriting. They were all spelt correctly, and although the kanji was wobbly, Kaede could get all the ingredients out of the fridge and around the kitchen without even having to look at them properly. She was happy with Gonta's progress. Practice makes perfect!
