Shoji was never embarrassed by being with his little sister, he never avoided her when she wanted attention. They were all they had when they were growing up, Shoji took care of her when their parents were away. Carrying his sister on his back wasn't something that he got annoyed with, he loved that his sister trusted him the way she did.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't Runaway Rya!"
The happy day just had to be interrupted, Rya looked down to see a familiar blonde boy, his arms crossed and smirking up at her like a villain. Rya jumped down from her brothers back and hid behind his towering frame. Mezo felt her hold his hand tightly.
"What the hell you want, Manoma?"
"Nothing, I'm just surprised that Cry Cry Rye is attending the school now. He approached the two. "You let in crazy like that? Mezo I thought you matured." Manoma was getting what he wanted, a crowd was forming around them as they were talking. He smiled satisfied that some of the school was listening, the rumors would spread that Rya Anne Shoji was a crazy person.
Mezo clenched his fists and bent down to meet his eye level, "Leave my sister alone, we all know you steal quirks to make yourself feel like you're a hero but you're just a spineless sack of skin in reality."
Manoma's Cheshire grin faded and looked at the blue haired girl behind Mezo, "She makes bad things happen!" He shouted to make sure everyone heard. Rya fled the school, running back to the only place she could call safe, her dorm room.
Shoji had had enough and grabbed Manoma by the neck, he knew that he could copy his quirk but he didn't care. It was so satisfying to slam him up against the wall. His blue eyes looked up at Shoji.
"Come on, it was just a little joke." He chuckled out of fright.
"Next time you say something to my sister, you won't have a voice to talk with." He growled.
"What is going on here?!" All Might came striding in, seeing the display. Mezo immediately dropped the cowardly blonde and gave a slight apologetic bow to his teacher.
"I just went to say hi to his sister and he attacked me." Manoma cooked up a lie. All Might looked down at the frightened kid and then back at Mezo, "Get to class, Shoji. You don't want to be late."
"But, my sister-"
"We'll send someone to get her. Go on." All Might was one of the teachers that were informed about Rya and her past run ins with trouble. He helped Manoma up and sternly told him to get back to his class. He left cowering like a dog with his tail between his legs.
All Might sighed and spotted Sato coming in, "Hey, Sato. Can you do something for me?"
"Sure, All Might. What's up?" He asked.
"Can you retrieve young Rya from the dorms, she's just had an encounter that made her run away."
Sato, not wanting to walk all the way back to the dormitories nodded despite how he didn't want to be late for class. He turned around and headed back to the building to find her.
"Rya?" He called out. He felt so out of place looking for his friend's sister. "Rya are you here?" He knocked on her door and there was no response. He opened her door to see that the room was empty but her balcony door was wide open. He sighed and looked out the balcony to see a maintenance ladder next to it.
"Great, a climber." He shook his head and started to climb the ladder to the roof. "This is bad architecture. Who builds a ladder next to a balcony?" He said to himself as he reached the roof. There she was, sitting by herself on the edge of the building.
"Rya." He spoke.
She jumped, a little startled at the deep voice. She looked back to see Sato approaching her. "What are you doing here?" She asked defensively.
He was taken by surprise with her tone but brushed it off, "You're missing class."
"I don't care." She crossed her arms and put her back to him.
"Why don't you want to go to class?" Sato, despite his fear of being so high up sat with her. Rya looked at him a little taken back by his effort to sit next to her.
"It's nothing, I'm okay." She looked down at the ground below her, a rush of fear and adrenaline overtook her for a second. "I'm sorry they sent you here to come get me."
"It's okay. I know it's scary to be the new kid on the first day." He said.
"You do?" She asked.
"Yeah." He shrugged. "The best way to deal with it is to show them you're not afraid."
"But I am." She shivered in the breeze. "I'm not someone who fakes things so easily. If I'm scared then that's what I am, I can't magically just be brave."
"Why not?" He replied. "If it's so easy to be frightened, why can't it be easy to be be courageous?" He shrugged with a kind look to his face.
Rya didn't like his reply, even though the words were to encourage her, she felt like they were taunting her instead. The way he spoke felt like he was opening up old wounds and rubbing salt into them. Anger swelled in her heart and she looked up at him, "Who do you think you are? You don't know me! How could you possibly know what I've been through?"
Sato opened his mouth to say something but she stood up, "You sit here and tell me to be brave but you never considered the possibility that maybe it's impossible for me to be brave. Maybe it's because whenever I try, bad things happen!" A nearby telephone pole suddenly started to fall, ready to hit the building. Sato looked surprised, seeing the pole come towards him at a rapid speed. Rya dove towards him, pushing him out of the way just in time before it hit the building.
She looked down at him with terrified blue eyes, "...I'm sorry." Tears started to fall. "I'm so sorry." She stood up and ran away again, wanting so much to disappear from the world. Sato sat up and looked at the now overturned pole, thankful that he was still alive.
