The day had finally come, mother nature must have known it too for gray clouds hung in the sky in a thick mass.
Aizawa was kind enough to give them a ride to the courthouse so they wouldn't get stuck in the possible rain. He looked back at Rya who looked scared to death. She took a deep breath and looked at her sensei, "Ill be here when it's over. Im with you." He reassured them.
"Thank you."
"No problem." They left the car and headed up the steps to the building. Mezo and Rya separated from thei sensei as they entered the office area where their parents and the judge sat. It was nothing like on tv, it was small and intimate.
"So, Mezo and Rya Shoji. Both if you are wishing to be emancipated from the guardianship of your parents is that correct?" The judge asked.
"Yes, your honor." Mezo replied.
"Can you explain why you're led to make this decision?" He asked.
The brother and sister exchanged looks before Shoji continued speaking, "Our parents have been absent in our lives since we were ten and eleven. They are constantly on business trips and even though they send money to us every month, we still lacked the contact of our parents. I'm sure you know that its essential to a childs growth to have both parents in the household."
The judge looked at the parents and waited for their reply, "We came and visited as much as possible." Their mother answered. "We would leve them two hundred dollars to use for food and essentials every month, that part is correct."
"Your honor the last time they ever physically came to visit was on christmas three years ago." Mezo spoke up.
The judge took notes on the conversation and shook his head. This wasn't looking at all good for them. "I hear you did something rather risky to get your sister into UA." The judge looked up at Shoji.
"Yes, I did."
"Can you tell me about that?" He asked. Mezo took a deep breath and looked at everyone at the table. "My sister was in this private school since and incident landed her expelled from the last public school she attended. It was an accident but the faculty didn't see it that way. So for her to get a fresh start, our parents sent her to a private boarding school for girls and boys. She was tormented there and whenever she came home for the holidays she wasn't the same Rya I knew.I hated seeing her so sad and crying all of the time. I basically took care of her when our parents went away so I took it upon myself to decide what was nest for her. I just wanted to see Rya happy."
"You could've come to us about the matter. We would've put her in the school with you." Their father spoke up. Mezo looked at him with harsh eyes, what a lie.
"No you wouldn't have. You were afraid of Rya so you hid her away and then went off on trips instead of trying to understand her." He placed a protective hand on his sisters shoulder. Their parents were rendered speechless.
The judge quieted them down as he took notes on the situation. He looked conflicted, this didn't look like it was going to turn out well.
"Miss Rya Shoji. Do you have anything to say about this whole conflict? Do you think your brother did the right thing?"
"Yes, your honor. Mezo did everything in his power to keep me safe, happy and cared for. He would make sure I was fed and taking care of myself everyday when he was in his first year at UA. He has become more of a father to me than my own and I love him for it. He has sacrificed alot for me and he was merely doing what he thought was best for me and it was. It was the best decision he had ever made for me because in the past few weeks I've been trained, taught and instructed on how to use my quirk. My parents failed on teaching me how to handle it so you can imagine what I went through trying to harness it on my own. Back in my previous schools I had not one friend and since I've enrolled in UA I have a class full of them. My classmates and faculty at the school have noticed a positive change in me and I couldn't agree more. My brother would be a perfect guardian to me."
The judge looked surprised and looked at everyone at the table. He took off his glasses and rubbed his temples. "Upon hearing everything that each of you had to say, Ive come to the conclusion that Mr. and Mrs. Shoji are not fit parents, I wont allow them to stay your legal guardians."
Rya and Mezo took a breath of relief.
"However, as much as I would love to grant your brother guardianship over you, he is only sixteen. Do you have an adult who you can trust with this role?" He asked.
"Uh...no. We couldn't find anyone in time."
The judge now looked brokenhearted, "Then I have no choice but to turn the both of you over to the foster care system." He brought in the bailiffs to escort them out, "No, you've git to be kidding me. There must be something else." Mezo was separated from his sister and he freaked. They didn't know this would be the last resort.
"Mezo!" Rya cried, fighting the officers.
"Its okay Rya-"
Her quirk activated and everything the room started to levitate, "I WANT MY BROTHER!" she screamed. A hand rested upon her shoulder as the officers were separated from her. Her quirk abruptly stopped and she looked up to see Aizawa staring down at her.
"Its okay, Rya." He told her softly.
He approached the now frazzled judge and looked at him in the eyes, "I will be their guardian."
