"Any other questions?" She asked.
"Where did you go to school before UA?" He asked, sitting back down with her. Rya looked like she regretted being asked the question. What a load of memories she had from her old school, none of them good, "I went to a boarding school. My parents sent me there so I would make new friends. The school I attended previously had a lot of...bullies. So they sent me there for a fresh start."
"How was it?"
"Hell." She looked at him with intensely guarded eyes. "Not one friend."
"Damn. I'm so sorry, Rya." His heart swelled in empathy for her. "What were you made fun of for?" He asked in a soft voice. Rya looked at him before standing up again, "I'm not exactly the ideal girl. I don't look like everyone else that's why. My...image is what makes people upset. Not to mention my quirk didn't appear until I was ten."
Sato sat there, watching her slightly pace around, clearly bothered by the confession she made. He was making progress with her effortlessly and that was good. "What do you mean, your image?" He asked, going deeper in their conversation to get to the root.
"You're kidding right? Look at me, do I have to spell it out?" She asked gesturing to herself. Sato forced down a chuckle and stood up to get a better look at her.
"I don't see anything wrong with you." He simply said.
"What?" She stared at him in surprise. "You're not serious."
"I am." He smiled. "What would make anyone tease you for your appearance. You look beautiful."
"Beautiful?" Her expression looked guarded again, not letting in the compliment. She didn't believe it, why should she? Everyone else thought she looked ugly and fat. Why didn't her see it? Was he teasing her? "Beautiful?"
"Well, yeah...." he scratched the back of his head, realizing what he just said "You're an attractive girl. I find it hard to believe that you were taunted like that."
"Are you blind?" She asked, tears threatening to leave her eyes.
"No, I see you clearly. There's nothing wrong with you. I promise." He took a step towards her, "Has any one ever said that to you?"
Rya shook her head, tears still welling in her eyes but refusing to fall. She hated crying, it made her feel weak. Anything to keep from crying, anything. It hurt too much to cry.
"Well, I'm glad I'm the first to say it." He gave her a sweet closed smile. "Goodnight, Rya." He left the roof, to leave her to her thoughts. Rya closed her eyes, making a branch fall from a nearby tree. The pain was too much for her, she had to take it out on something. What made him say something like that? It wasn't true...it sure looked like he was telling the truth though.
This wasn't fair, why did he say such a thing? She was so used to feeling un pretty. The tears finally fell and she couldn't stop, Cry baby Rye. That's what they all called her. No wonder she hated to cry, even the one thing she as built to express with was tainted. Why was she even put on the earth? Was she just here to be everyone's circus freak to laugh at? All her life she was met with judgy eyes and laughter. What else should she think?
Sato hung there on the ladder, listening to her cries. He didn't mean to make her cry but he knew he made progress with her, more than he expected. He climbed down the rest of it and walked back inside. Mezo looked back at him, surprised he was in one piece.
"What's up? How did it go?"
"Let's just say, I rescued the cat from the roof." Sato made his way to his bedroom.
"What the hell does that mean?" He asked.
"She's fine, Mezo. She just needed to talk a little."
"She talked to you?" He asked.
"A little, yeah." He turned around to see Mezo standing there gobsmacked.
"Maybe she needed a complete stranger to talk to...it worked." He shrugged.
He left for his room and fell asleep. Rya came down from the roof to retrieve something from her room, she climbed back up to sit and play her ukulele. At first she didn't have any song in mind, she just played for a while to relax her nerves.
Mezo heard the familiar sound and climbed the roof to hear his sisters voice, "when the leader of the bad guys sang, something soft and soaked in pain, I heard the echo from his secret hide away."
It's been a while since he heard her voice and couldn't help but listen to her.
"He must have forgot to close his doors, as he cracked out those dismal chords and his four walls declared him insane." She looked back to see her brother and she beckoned him over. He sat with her and didn't say a word, he didn't want to interrupt the moment.
"I found my way, right time wrong place as I pled my case...you're the Judge, oh no. Set me free. You're the judge, oh no. Set me free." She strummed the strings so light and carefree that it seemed like their worries melted away. "I know my soul's freezing, hell's hot for good reason, so please...take me."
Music was Ryas therapy, she taught herself how to play the instrument when she saw a Hawaiian man sing Over The Rainbow. She was captivated at how happy the instrument sounded even when it was a sad song. The sound of the Ukulele made her happy and soothed her thoughts.
"You're the judge, oh no. Set me free. You're the judge oh no. Set me free..."
Mezo wrapped an arm around her as she finished the song, seeing her troubled face. "I haven't heard that voice in a couple years." He told her. "I missed it."
