Chapter 25:

Silence.

The heavy oak doors break open, echoing through the thin walls.

The harshness of the atmosphere immediately heightens as Fallon and her mother enter the church hall, their thick footsteps sounding deafening against the wood flooring.

She feels a sudden rush through her fingers as her mother squeezes her wrists, indirectly pleading for her to contain her bursting emotions, to prevent her hidden wrath from unleashing.

She catches the eye of Calista Richards, Damari's mother, easily recognising that strident glare in her eye.

That's it, Fallon begins to grin, that's it Mrs Richards, release that indignant feeling inside you.

Show your real colours.

Calista proceeds to rise from her seat, Mr Richards serenely asking her to calm down.

Fallon rolls her eyes, smirking to herself as she continues her journey down the aisle, taking a seat at the front row, her mother's arms wrapped around her.

Oaklynn tugs at April's velvet black top.

"Thank God she's here. That would've caused a scene" She giggles.

"For real" Divine whispers, shaking her head.

"No, that's the problem. She shouldn't be here. Her presence will cause a scene" April hisses, inhaling sharply.

Nobody wants to see Fallon vexed.

Nobody wants to cause a scene.

It just happens.

"May we proceed with the service?" The priest glances around, slightly unsettled.

Fallon's mother passes him a quick nod.

1:19pm.

Fallon attempts to silence her phone, her mother throwing her irritated glimpses.

She's received a message.

917-443-739.

She frowns, unable to recognise the unknown number.

She clicks on their message, her eyebrows tilting in confusion.

I know you did something to him.

I don't know what it is yet, but I know you are the reason he's no longer alive.

You're a crazy woman, just like he always said!

I'll find out the truth, and lock you up in prison for life!

Beep.

The phone is switched off.

Fallon inhales deeply, closing her eyes and leaning her head against the headboard.

She knows who this is.

Therefore, she knows what she needs to do.

It's the right thing, she convinces herself, I've been threatened. Therefore, I need to protect myself. And to protect myself, I need to act first. Before they do.

Suddenly, the doors of the church lash open, as a woman storms through.

Fallon rises from her seat, slightly smirking. This must be her.
