TW: Slight mentions of past child abuse

"Can I be excused?" Tommy asked, already sliding out of his chair to take his plate to the kitchen.
"Actually, do you think we could have a little talk?"
Tommy froze, not meeting his father's eyes.
"I just wanted to ask you a question, then you can leave."
He slid back into his chair, fiddling with the buttons on his overalls.
"Tommy," Dream said gently, and the boy hesitantly looked up. Green eyes and soft freckles gazed at him lovingly, and Dream reached out a hand towards Tommy. "It's okay to be scared, but I promise you're not in trouble. I really did just want to ask you a question."
"Okay," Tommy replied in a small voice, relaxing slightly. Dream wasn't like them. 'Little talk' meant an actual talk with Dream. He wouldn't hurt him.
"I was wondering if you would like to go on a play date!"
Tommy puzzled. "With who?" He asked slowly.
"Well, I connected with a parent in the area who has a kid who is only a few months older than you, and I think you guys would get along great."
Tommy didn't like older kids. Not all of them were bad, but he saw some being mean to other kids his age at school. Luckily, he wasn't a direct receiver of their jabs, but it didn't make him any less frightened of them.
But if the other kid was only a few months older... and Dream, as much as he tried to hide it, looked so hopeful that Tommy would say yes.
"...Sure," He said with a small smile. Dream positively beamed. "That's great! It's going to be this Saturday at the park."
"Hey, Dad?"
"Yeah, bud?"
"Do you think you could stay with us? At least for the beginning."
"Sure, I can! Whatever you're most comfortable with."
That night Tommy curled under his space blanket, Henry pulled tightly to his chest. He felt a strange roll of something in his stomach, and his breath was slightly shaky.
New people were very scary, no matter how old they were. It had taken Tommy a long time to warm up to Dream's friends George and Sapnap, and even now preferred to stay in his room with his toys when they came over.
Would this new kid be nice? Would they like cows and space like him? Would they not have a mom like Tommy?
These questions rolled around his brain like marbles, and he didn't go to sleep until the moon was high in the sky.
Saturday crept toward him, the bright red marker reading 'Tommy's park playdate' on the calendar mocking him whenever he passed by. As the days between the current one and Saturday grew shorter, his marbles grew bigger and more numerous.
It felt like that coin game he had seen at the zoo, where you dropped a coin down a ramp and it rolled around a big, wide bowl before eventually falling down a dark hole in the center, spinning so fast around the tight tube that it looked like a blur.
The thoughts rolled around his head, gradually gaining speed, until they fell through his throat and into his stomach, landing with a plunk, only to come back up again and roll around in his brain once more.
