Graduation - where to go?

"I can't believe we're almost graduating. It's like we just became cadets yesterday." Jean said as he nudged your shoulder.

"Well, which of the three are you gonna join?" He continued as he looked at you.

"I don't know. I think when I signed up way back when, I signed the one for the scouts. But now I'm scared it was the wrong decision." You told him honestly as he put his hand through your hair to ruffle it.

"I'm becoming a scout as well. So I'll be there for you." He smiled as you nodded.

"Thank you." You said quietly as you walked with Jean up to a little stage outside where the commanding officers would tell you where you could go after graduating.

A new commander whom you've never seen stood up before speaking about which pathways you should choose. His name was Erwin, a tall slim man who had a monotone voice.

He called out the best 10 students, not being surprised when your name wasn't called. You were glad Mikasa, Sasha and Jeans name were called though.

Jean looked at you, waiting to watch your emotions as you put on a smile. He sighed at your reaction, hoping you weren't jealous or mad.

"Everyone else, you have the choice to choose between joining the scout regiment, the garrison regiment, or the military police regiment" he said. "Now before you decide, let me inform you on what each squad does."

"The scout regiment takes the best of the best. The ones willing to throw their lives away for the sake of humanity. You will be fighting outside of the walls, working to defeat the titans and find any information on them we can." He said sternly.

"Oh fuck no." You said in fear. There's no way you were doing that one, right?

"The garrison regiment keeps everyone inside the walls safe. They evacuate citizens in case of emergencies, and are always aware of what is happening within the walls."

"The Military police regiment protect the king within the walls." He finished as your only options were the military police regiment and the garrison regiment. There's no way you wanted to be a scout after hearing Erwin's description.

"The top 10 are preferred to join the scouts." He said, basically admitting that the best students would be the ones in the most risky regiment.

"Jean..." You whispered as the boy looked at you, clearly noticing you were shaking.

"I don't want to do it. I can't do it." You whispered, voice nearly cracking as he bent down next to you.

"(Y/n), make the decision you feel YOU should make." He said as your body couldn't stop shuttering.

"Its gonna be okay." He reassured you as you hugged his side.

You could tell he was scared as well. His body was slightly shaking. He wrapped his arm around you to hold onto your other shoulder.

"Everyone wishing to join any group other than the scouts, please leave." Commander Erwin said as so many people left. You couldn't move. Stuck shaking while in a hug with Jean.

Jean let go of you. "It's your decision." He whispered as you were contemplating on wether or not you should stay or go.

You let go of Jean before looking around you. All of the people you grew to trust here, Sasha, mikasa, Jean, Connie. They all stayed their ground. But you just couldn't.

"I'm sorry." You said before you turned around, walking away in shame.

'I don't want to die anymore'

After being here for so long, learning to grow and love again, it wasn't something you wanted to give up. Even if you parted paths, you'd be able to cherish these moments. You didn't want to ruin it from here. You did enough.

You felt your hand being grabbed as you turned around at the force.

....Mikasa.

"Mikasa..." You whispered as the girl stared at the ground holding onto your arm.

"Don't leave me." She said in a quiet voice as you couldn't help but feel your heart break.

"(Y/n), I need you." You couldn't see her face, as her hair was pushed in front of her face. But her voice sounded strong, yet the hitch in her tone told otherwise. She was hurt as well.

"Mikasa... I... I don't want to be a scout." You said as a teardrop fell down your face at the realization that Mikasa had stuck to her choice of following Eren and becoming a scout.

"Please." Her hand began to shake as you could hear her sniffle.

"Mikasa." You let tears stroll down your face without sobbing, holding yourself back.

"What about Sammy? Our mission to find answers about her and your mother! We've been through so much I don't want our time together to end." She said as she let go of your hand, to pull your body in for a hug.

"Me neither." You began to sob, not caring about how dumb the two of you looked. You didn't care if people thought you were weak. You cared about Mikasa. You loved her.

"Guys." Eren whispered trying to get the two of you to separate, Mikasa turning to Eren after hearing his voice. He pointed towards Erwin.

Everyone was staring at you. It was terribly embarrassing. "Sorry." You said as you looked at everyone, clearly taking up their time.

"Im sorry." You repeated as you looked at Mikasa, not wanting to leave her but knowing becoming a scout was something you no longer wanted.

"Please stay safe." Mikasa said before letting go of your hand completely and nodding.

You turned around trying not to break down in both sadness and embarrassment. You didn't want to split up like this. You wanted to be with Mikasa and find out answers with her.

God damn it.

You walked back to your cabin before falling to the ground inside.

"Why couldn't I just stay with her?" You mumbled before punching the floor.

"Why!" You sobbed quietly as you knew you'd have to pack up and be ready to split up from the other groups tomorrow.

"Hey." Hitch said next to you as you sat in silence, wiping off the remaining tears from your eyes hoping she didn't see your meltdown.

"I'm going to join the military police brigade. So is Annie. If you're stuck you can always come with us. We'll live our lives getting fat and protecting the king." She smiled as you tried to smile as well, being so thankful Hitch cared enough to tell you to join her.

"I'm still so stuck." You said honestly as she began rubbing her neck.

"I want answers about my mom. And I want answers about Sammy." You told her as she nodded.

"Me as well. But I'm sure if we join the military police brigade, we'll get access to important files. The kings files. We'd learn so much." She reminded you as you nodded.

Just then Annie walked into the cabin as well, sitting on the opposite side of you, so you now were squished between the two girls.

"You love Mikasa, don't you." Annie said as you looked up to her moving your gaze from Hitch to Annie.

"I could tell. Your eyes always shimmered when you talked to her and you get unbelievably jealous of Eren when she occupies herself with him." Annie said as your face turned red, you trying to hide it.

"I love someone too." Annie said quietly before looking at Hitch, then looking at the floor.

"But things don't always go the way they should." She said as you never really heard encouraging words from Annie. Annie was very careless and always looked like she hated what she was doing. But her being able to open up washed away your suspicion of her.

"They don't." You giggled in acceptance as you hugged the two girls.

"I'll join the military police brigade." You said, hoping you'd stay with the two girls, get more information with the position of being close to the king, and even just be aware of Annie, if the dream actually was a warning. If something were to happen with Annie you'd be bound to find out.
