The beach was quiet and serene. The only sounds were the waves dancing against the shore and the gentle breeze shuffling the leaves on the trees. The pack sat around the campfire. Quill, Sam, Embry, Jared, Jacob and Paul each sat with their imprints. Embry picked up his guitar from the sand and was about to begin plucking at the strings when, "AAAACHOOO!" An almighty sneeze broke the peace.

"Sorry," (Y/N) muttered, her cheeks flushing red and she was glad the sun had set so she could hide her embarrassment. Paul chuckled beside her and squeezed her shoulder.

"I think someone's coming down with a cold," he said. "We better get you home."

(Y/N) sniffed and pouted, "I have been feeling a bit weird recently."

Leah leaned across Paul and put a hand to (Y/N)'s forehead. "You're burning up," she grimaced. Her eyes were full of concern.

(Y/N)'s parents had died when she was very young, so Leah and the Clearwater's had taken the role of her family. (Y/N) knew nothing about her family, who they were or why they didn't want her. They'd abandoned her in La Push. A young Leah had found the baby on the beach and brought her home to her parents. Since then, (Y/N) had been adopted into their family. That was how she met Paul. They went to school together, played together and grew up together. From the moment they had met as toddlers, it was obvious (Y/N) was Paul's imprint. They were inseparable.

Despite not actually being a wolf, (Y/N) was an honorary member of the pack. She knew the truth about her imprint and about the history of the Quileute Tribe. It would have been impossible to hide it from her, so Harry decided to teach her everything.

"Come on, babe. Let's get you home." Paul lifted his girlfriend into his arms and carried her away from the group.

"Bye, guys," (Y/N) waved feebly at her friends.

It had been two weeks since (Y/N) had first fallen ill and she didn't seem to be getting any better. Paul stayed by her side pretty much 24/7. He'd looked after her as best he could, but with each day, his worry grew.

Paul watched as she slept, somewhat peacefully. He didn't want to disturb her slumber, but she needed to take her medicine. He gently removed the damp flannel from her forehead and replaced it with a fresh one. This action caused (Y/N) to stir. Groggily, she opened her eyes just a fraction. A small smile appeared on her dry lips when she saw who had woken her. "Thanks," she croaked.

"Here," Paul brought a glass of water to her lips. She tried to sit up a little, but the effort proved too much and she flopped back onto the bed, causing some water to spill on her blanket. She growled under her breath, a noise Paul had never heard her make before.

"I'll get you a straw," Paul said. His eyebrows pulled together. Had he heard that correctly? That sound? It was a wolf's growl. He placed the glass on the bed-side cabinet and left the room.

(Y/N) rolled onto her side and reached for the glass, but dizziness overcame her. Her hand tried to grasp the cup, but knocked it on the floor, shattering it into a thousand pieces. With an animalistic sound, she felt herself shaking. She grasped at the blanket, shredding it as her fingers tuned to claws. The bed-board cracked under her, as her weight grew. (Y/N) began to panic, when she realised what was happening.

From the kitchen, Paul heard a crash and then a loud bang coming from (Y/N)'s room. He abandoned his hunt for the straw and rushed to the bedroom. A (Y/H/C) wolf stood where his girlfriend should have been. Splinters of wood and shards of glass scattered the floor. The wolf bared its teeth, but there was something in its eyes that made Paul stop. "(Y/N)?"

The wolf whimpered in response and Paul approached her. "It's okay, baby. I'm here," he stretched a hand out, cautiously and placed his palm on her nose. "Don't panic. The pack can help you."

(Y/N)'s breathing slowed and Paul watched as the wolf before him changed back into her human from. She was curled up in a ball on the floor, her naked body covered in cuts and scratches from the broken glass. Paul grabbed the dressing gown from the back of the door and wrapped it around her shivering from. He hugged her close to his chest, rubbing her back gently to calm her. Sobs shook her body, as she leant into him.

"How am I a wolf?" she managed, through the tears.

"I don't know," Paul breathed, "but we're going to find out."

Paul helped (Y/N) dress and brought her into the bathroom. He cleaned and dressed her wounds, while she sipped at water, trying to calm herself and collect her thoughts. She knew nothing about her parents and her heritage. Had they been wolves? Had they known she would become one and that's why they abandoned her? These were all questions she may never know the answers to, but she was sure as hell going to try and find out.

Once she was cleaned up and calm, Paul went to find Harry and Billy. They needed to call an Elders meeting.

As soon as he heard what had happened to his adopted daughter, Harry rushed home from his fishing trip with Charlie. He found (Y/N) sat at the kitchen table, with Leah, Seth and Paul. They were speaking in hushed tones, soothing the panicked girl.

"(Y/N)?" Harry brought attention to himself as he entered the kitchen. (Y/N) rushed towards her 'father' and he opened his arms.

"Harry, I'm scared," she sobbed.

"I know," he replied, "Billy and I will find out about your ancestors. We'll get to the bottom of this. For now, stay with the pack. They'll help you..." he paused, sighing, "adjust." With that, he let go of her, nodded to his children and Paul and left the house, in search of answers.

A week had passed since (Y/N) first turned. Paul and the other pack members taught her how to change discretely, where to leave spare clothes and how to control herself. Initially, it had been difficult. Any tiny inconvenience could set her off and she would change. Paul had found certain things he could say to calm her though and she was getting better.

Harry, Billy and the other Elders had been working hard to research something about (Y/N)'s past, but had so far come up blank. At this rate, they figured they would never know who she came from.

(Y/N) began to care less and less about finding out her past. She had a new family now, one that wouldn't abandon her. She had Leah and Seth, her siblings. She had Harry and Sue, her parents. And, of course, there was Paul. Her family were the pack too. They helped her become a fully-fledged part of the pack and that was enough. If her biological parents didn't want her, that didn't matter. (Y/N) had found people who did. She thought about this as she sat in front of the camp fire, listening to Embry play his guitar and the gentle breeze through the trees. The waves danced along the shore and everything was perfect. She leant on Paul's shoulder and, with his free hand, he played with the soft locks of her (Y/H/C) hair. Maybe becoming a wolf was the best outcome for her. It pathed a future with the people she loved. And she didn't need anymore than that.
