✴DEMETRI'S POV ✴

As soon as we step back through the painting and into the gallery of the castle, a cold feeling settles over me, lingering in my blood and in my heart. It's almost reminiscent of the effect Alec's gift has on us, a numb kind of emptiness that makes you wish you could just shut everything out. Speaking of Alec, the boy in question is standing there by the far wall, almost like he's been waiting for us.

His red eyes watch us carefully, widening when he sees the state we're both in. "So it's true, then." he says quietly, walking towards us with slow, even steps. Felix lets out a hiss, glaring fiercely at the boy. "Don't you even start with us! We're not in the mood. And don't you dare speak a word of this to anyone else." he says, his voice dangerously low.

Alec shrugs, a tiny frown on his face. "Don't worry, they already know. Word travels fast, and somebody already figured it out. What I'd like to know is... What the fuck happened to the two of you?" he answers. His words strike a cold fear in me, sending a jagged streak of terror down my spine. "Wait. What do you mean, they already know?" I ask. Alec glances down at his hands for a second, before looking back up at me.

"Chelsea informed Aro. So you probably already know who told her. Look, I don't really give a damn either way, but I have to know. Is it true, what they say? Have you... The human you've been spending all your time with... Is she your mate?" he asks. I nod, my heart twisting painfully in my chest again. Seeing my agonized expression, Alec's eyes widen. "Something happened to her, didn't it? Tell me." he demands.

I swallow hard, unable to find the words to tell him just what happened in there. "Y/N... She was taken from us. Where she's being held, we don't know. But we couldn't go after her. It was Nadya. She caused too much damage." Felix speaks up quietly. Alec's eyes widen at the mention of Nadya's name, and he takes a step back, his hands shaking a little and his face going paler than normal.

"N-no. That woman, all those years ago... The one that got away?? She's back again??" he whispers. I nod, clutching my severed limb to my chest. "Please, Alec. You have to help us, so I can get back to Y/N...!" I plead. He glances over his shoulder, casting a quick look at the door, before his gaze returns to me again. "Come with me, Jane and I will help you. But just this once... Because it's your mate." he says, his voice barely audible.

Felix and I follow Alec out of the room, sneaking through the hallways and avoiding anyone in sight. Within minutes, we make it to Jane's room, and Alec shoves open the door. His sister lets out a noise of protest, the sound quickly dying out in her throat when she sees us. "Sister, help me. Please. The rumors are true, and Demetri's mate is in danger. She's been taken, and these two need to go find her." Alec says.

Without another word, the petite blonde nods and moves towards us, her mouth set in a grim line. "Are they aware that Aro knows?" she murmurs. Alec nods, his eyes darkening a little. "Yes. Which means we're working on borrowed time here." he mutters. The next twenty minutes pass by so slowly, an almost agonizing wait, and I can feel my nerves starting to fray. I have to get back to Y/N, and I need to make sure Aro doesn't get in my way...
