💊 READER'S POV 💊

You let out a quiet grumble as you roll over in bed, onto your stomach. Your head aches a little and your limbs hurt, your eyelids feeling heavier than normal. Letting out a muted groan, you roll over again onto your back, staring up at the ceiling. You can feel hot tears pricking at your eyes as you swallow, and you wince in pain.

Your throat feels like somebody force fed you sandpaper, with no water to help it go down easier. You glance over at the clock on the bedside table, sighing when you see the time. "7:45", the numbers read in their little red LED lights. Groaning, you turn over to lie on your side, pulling the covers tighter over you as a shiver wracks your fragile body. It wasn't even 8 AM yet, and all you wanted right now was your mate, Alec, by your side...

Suddenly, the door to the bedroom opens with a quiet creak, and you hear footsteps enter the room, the door closing behind whoever it is. You let out a muffled groan as you bury your face in the pillow, trying to will your headache away. "Sweet face, what's wrong?" a familiar voice asks, quiet concern in their voice. You don't say anything, and a moment later, the bed moves slightly as Alec climbs up to sit next to you.

"Little human, talk to me, what's wrong?" he whispers, his cool fingertips lightly stroking the side of your face. You turn your head towards him, your teeth chattering a little as another shiver runs down your spine. "Alec, I'm freezing." you croak out, your voice barely audible. Your mate's eyes widen as he takes in the sight of you.

"Y/N..." he whispers, moving his hand up to feel your forehead. He lets out a soft hiss as he pulls his fingers back, his red eyes growing a shade darker. "Sweet face, you're burning up...!" he breathes, a worried look on his face. You shake your head at him, your teeth chattering once more. "N-no, I'm cold, Alec. It's freezing in here!" you whimper.

The witch twin nods, leaning in to place a soft kiss on your forehead. "It's because you have a fever, Y/N. Stay here, I'll be right back, I promise. I need to go see if my sister will cover for me today." he murmurs, climbing off the bed. You nod, burrowing back under the covers again, your body tensing up. Alec opens the door to the bedroom, quietly stepping out and closing the door behind him again.

You hated being sick, you utterly despised it. It was one of the many things you didn't like about being human. As you let out a quiet cough, your eyes begin to close again, and you hug the covers close to you, in an effort to stay warm. Pretty soon, you're drifting off to sleep again...

👿ALEC'S POV 👿

I knock on the door, tapping my foot impatiently on the floor as I wait. Finally, the door opens and my sister gives me a raised eyebrow. "Yes? Brother, are they having the trial early today?" she asks. I shake my head no, an anxious frown on my face.

"I know I don't usually ask a whole lot of you, but... I need your help today, dear sister. Y/N is sick, she's got a fever. I cannot leave her alone in there while I'm away at a stupid trial." I murmur. Jane's eyes widen, and she nods at me.

"You needn't say anything more, brother. Felix, Demetri and I will take your place at the trial, go. And make sure she sleeps in thin layers, it's not good for humans to be covered when they're sick with a fever." she says softly. I nod, the many memories of our time as humans lingering in my mind.

So often, when Jane and I were sick, our mother would have us wear thin layers of clothing, in order to let the fever pass. Jane takes a step forward, giving me a hug and a light kiss on the cheek, a rare sign of affection that only myself and Y/N get to see. "Give our little human a hug for me, brother. Now go, she needs you." she tells me. As she pulls away to smile at me, her eyes widen a little.

"Oh! By the way, I don't know if you knew this, but Olianna restocked our medical supply downstairs, so please take some cough syrup and cold medicine with you for Y/N, it'll help." she adds, a knowing look in her eyes. I nod, turning and heading back down the hall. "Thank you!" I call out over my shoulder. Jane's bubbling laugh fades away behind me as I head around the corner. Hopefully all of this would help Y/N feel better soon.

💊READER'S POV 💊

You're sleeping rather fitfully, when you feel a hand on your shoulder, gently shaking you awake. "Y/N, mia amore, I need you to get up for me." Alec's soft voice slowly coaxes you out of your sleep. You let out a tired little grumble, pulling yourself into a sitting position as you open your eyes.

Alec sits there on the bed next to you, his pretty red eyes watching you closely. "There she is, my sweet face. How are we doing?" he murmurs with a smile. You wince as you stretch, all your limbs aching again now that you're fully awake. Swallowing, you whimper softly as the pain comes back. "My throat hurts..." you whisper, tears pricking at your eyes.

Your mate nods, a sympathetic look on his face. "I know, Y/N. Here, my sister told me this would help you. I highly suggest you take it." he murmurs, pulling a box of cold medicine out of the bag sitting on the bed. You shake your head at him, your lower lip sticking out in a pout. "Do I have to?" you whisper. You never liked cough medicine, not really.

You found it had too metallic and bitter of a taste, not enjoyable in the slightest. Alec nods, opening up the box with a tiny smirk on his face. "I could always mix it with blood?" he teases you. You stick your tongue out at him, wrinkling up your nose. "Would you, please?" you say sarcastically. Ironically, your sarcasm is lost on your mate, as he looks at you in shock, his eyes wide.

"I... I was merely kidding, little human!" he says. You give him a weak grin, lightly poking him in the side. "So was I." you whisper, before letting out a reluctant sigh. "Alright, let's get this over with." you add, glancing at that dreaded bottle of medicine. Alec nods, opening the bottle and pouring out your dose into the cup.

"You take this for me like a good girl, and I'll spend the entire day in here by your side. Deal, Y/N?" he asks. You nod, taking the cup from him and downing the awful medicine as quickly as you can. As you hand the cup back to him, you make a face. "Ugh! I hate that stuff!" you groan. Alec laughs softly, climbing off the bed and disappearing into the bathroom to rinse out the cup.

"I know you do, but it's going to help you, little human!" he calls out. You don't say anything, instead choosing to lie back down and curl up into a little ball. When Alec comes back into the room, he sets the cup and the medicine down on the bedside table, glancing over at you.

"My sister said you might want to wear thin layers of clothing, but... I think given our kind's body temperature, you could easily get away with what you're wearing now. Alright?" he says softly. You nod wordlessly, patting the spot next to you on the bed. He lets out a soft laugh as he climbs in next to you, pulling the covers over the two of you.

You feel him place a soft kiss on the back of your head, before you hear his voice at your ear. "Sleep now, Y/N. I'll be here when you wake to take care of you." he whispers. As your eyes fall closed, you let out a ragged sigh of content. It was nice to know that you had your own little guardian vampire watching over you, today...
