Jessica rushed into the hospital ward, her husband in tow to see their son whose arm was wrapped up in a bandage seated up on the hospital bed a frown on his face. She immediately broke down in tears.
She rushed towards him and hugged him to her chest.
"I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry"
"Mom, I'm okay", he said to her hugging her back. He was glad to see his family again. He was really lucky to have only come out with a concussion and a broken arm.
She pulled out of the hug and grabbed both of his cheeks.
"My baby boy, I'm so sorry"
"No, it's my entire fault. I shouldn't have run out the way I did. I'm sorry for scaring you both", he turned to face his father who hadn't said anything since they both entered. He shook his head and moved closer to hug his son. When they pulled away,
"So I'm not your biological son?"
"Oliver"
"It's the truth though and it's alright. I always thought it was weird that I don't look like anyone in the family"
Jessica turned to face her husband and they exchanged sad smiles.
"Have you found my biological parents?"
Jessica slowly nodded.
"We are supposed to meet with them in a few hours"
"Oh cool", Oliver replied looking down, except it wasn't cool at all. He felt sick to his stomach.
"Oliver look at me", Daniel finally spoke up. "Oliver"
He finally looked up to look at his father.
"We love you and there's no way we're letting you go"
"But it's also important to know who your real son is, I get it"
"Oliver, you are our real son", Jessica assured him grabbing his hand.
"No mom, I'm not and it's fine. I know I've been a disappointment and you aren't really proud of me. Don't start to be now"
"Oliver"
"Can you both leave? I'd like to sleep", he pulled his hand away from his mother's and lay to sleep looking away from them.
Jessica wanted to reach for him but Daniel stopped her.
"Let's go, we'll come later", he whispered to her and gently pulled her out.
As Lia heard the doctor spill nonsense, she felt her head would explode.
Chris is not your biological son.
She'd never felt the urge to punch a person as much as she did then.
"It was a terrible mistake, one that we can never repay you or the other family involved. I know it's sudden but the other family would like-"
Lia had heard enough. She couldn't take it anymore.
"Excuse me, with all due respect. Chris is my biological son. I carried him for nine months, so I know he's my biological son. I acknowledge the other family's despair but their child was not switched at birth with my son. Perhaps, maybe with some other family and their son but not mine, definitely not my Chris. If that is all, I'll take my leave now"
She stood prepared to leave. The doctor immediately stood up too, intent to stop her.
"Miss Cameron you have to understand"
"No I will not", Lia finally lashed out. "You called me here, telling me that my son, my boy who I have raised for the last 17 years isn't really my son and on what basis? No DNA test to back up your claim"
"Well, if a DNA test will put your mind at ease, I suggest-"
"Well sorry to disappoint but I cannot afford it and since nothing is free in this goddamn country, we'd never know and now if you'll excuse, my real son has his first major art expedition and I would love to go support him"
"Miss Cameron wait a minute"
Lia was already walking to the door. As she opened, she bumped into a couple. She quickly apologised and left the office.
She was making it a mission to leave the hospital and never return. She was also about to break down in tears because what if-
No Lia, no, she thought. Chris was her biological son.
"Lia?" she heard her name being called and had to stop. She turned and faced the familiar face who called her.
Recognizing the individual, in spite of the situation, her heart warmed at the sight of the other person.
"Lena"
Lena, on the other hand, stood up from the chair in the waiting room to walk towards her. Lia wanted to back up because something about the woman that stood a good head taller than her was intimidating and powerful.
"It's been a while. How have you been?" Lena asked her smiling at the beautiful woman.
"I've been good"
Lies but that seemed like the decent enough answer.
"What about you?" she decided to ask in return.
"I've been alright. What brings you here?"
Remembering why she was at the hospital in the first place, a wave of nausea hit her.
"Whoa, are you ok?" she felt Lena's hand on her back steadying her.
"I'm fine, thanks"
Lena didn't look convinced but let it go. It remained silent between them for a while until Lena decided to break the silence. She was going to use this opportunity.
"Lia, I was thinking-"
"Lena"
Lena almost cursed hearing her boss' voice calling to her but she turned regardless to acknowledge her presence.
Lia, on the other hand, watched as Jessica Borghese walked towards them and she didn't like the air that was around her.
She had a terrible feeling that what was about to ensue wouldn't end well.
