Oliver sat in his room fighting the urge to punch something. He would have but he already had the broken arm to nurse, a bruised knuckle would be another headache.
He didn't understand why he was so bothered about the recent development. He'd always had an inkling that his parents were not really his parents. It wasn't even a big deal these days. His parents adopted him, more or less. There were many adopted kids in the world. It wasn't a big deal but why did it feel like it was.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck"
He felt the reflection of the sun through the window of his room though the drapes were down. He then realized he had been awake for hours. He was thankful it was weekend because going to school would have made him lose his mind completely.
He heard a knock on his door suddenly,
"Oliver, are you awake?"
His mother, or adoptive mom or whatever label he was supposed to use now.
He really wanted to punch something.
"Oliver, I know you don't want to talk to me now but are you okay? You can talk to me, I'm here for you"
He wanted to say something, really wanted to but his mouth wouldn't open.
He heard her knock again.
"Oliver, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for this to happen. Please my love, speak to me"
I want to but I don't why and I don't know why I'm fucking angry.
It was radio silence for the next few minutes and he guessed she left.
"Fuck"
Lia held Kathy's hand as she was about to go into surgery.
"I'm so proud of you, baby"
"Thanks mom"
"We'll be out here, waiting for you to come out"
Kathy nodded and let out a deep breath.
She then turned to face Chris who stood at the other side of the stretcher she was lying on.
They both stared at each other for a few seconds not saying anything until Kathy broke it.
"I don't think I've ever told you this you're the best brother ever. I just thought you should know"
Chris looked away and nodded.
"This is the part where you say I'm the best sister ever", she teased not wanting him to think she meant it though it would but then she remembered he's on the spectrum and wouldn't even understand.
"You're the best sister ever", Chris finally said.
"I didn't mean-" she started to say but,
"It's time", a nurse, with two others announced when they are close enough.
Kathy exhaled again.
It's going to be okay, she reassured herself, or tried to. Her heart was beating at an irregular pace.
She turned to look at Chris one more time and realized this could be the last time she saw him.
Yes Lia had said she must have happy and positive thoughts alone but she wasn't a child. Though she knew she had an higher chance now of surviving thankfully because of the emergency surgery, everything and anything could go wrong.
"See you around, Chris"
He nodded again. She almost rolled her eyes. She would miss him so badly.
"Good luck" she heard Lia's voice behind her as the nurses rolled her away.
It was going to be a long night.
Lia watched them go until the surgery room was closed and that was when she let out the tears. She had been holding it in for hours in order not to overwhelm Kathy though she felt like an hypocrite. She advised Kathy to let her tears out while she wouldn't do the same. The truth of the matter is that she was terrified, terribly terrified.
The 'what ifs' were going out of control in her head.
Kathy had become an important part of their lives and if she were to lose her, she wouldn't die but something in her would die if that happened.
Oh, God I shouldn't think like this.
The hand on her arm snapped her out of her thoughts. She turned to face Chris who was frowning. At that moment, she realized she'd been so busy and hadn't realized that her son has had a massive growth spurt. She blinked not believing it. Last time she checked, they were of the same height but now, he was at least three inches taller.
Oh God, how did I not notice? I have neglected my son, she thought.
She quickly wiped her tears and took her hand in his.
"Come, you must be starving. I saw a nice fast food place a few blocks from the hospital. Let's go"
She tried to pull him along but he wouldn't move. She turned to face him to see him staring at the door Kathy passed through just minutes prior.
"We'll be back after eating, I promise. Come on, let's go"
Their last meal was breakfast when they went home to change and freshen up. Though Chris hadn't told her, she was sure he was starving.
He finally allowed her to pull him along.
Lia couldn't wait another second to vacate the premises. She needed to breathe and the hospital was choking her.
Right now, she could only hope and pray for the success of the surgery.
