Oliver stood awkwardly at the door to an hospital's room. He wished there was a way he could check who was in there. He felt like cursing and calling everything quits. After the encounter with Chris, that had Chris crying on him and apologizing over and over again for reasons Oliver did not understand, he then begged Oliver to find a way to let them see Kathy. The switch was so sudden that Oliver could only open his mouth and close it like a fish for a few seconds. When he became a hero in Chris' eyes, Oliver couldn't comprehend.
And that was why he stood outside the ICU where Kathy laid. If he was a normal person, he wouldn't have been allowed to be here but his influence as a Borghese got him this far but even that influence couldn't get him into Kathy's ward without her foster parents' consent. Lia had filled him up on the issue at ground and Oliver was even more pissed. Even though Kathy and him didn't see eye to eye and half the time she was conscious, she glared at him and publicly declared her hate for him, her foster parents suddenly showing was a disrespect to her and to Lia and to Chris. As she recovered, she needed love and support during this time from her true family, not from a pair of assholes who didn't care when she left home at twelve.
See, Oliver could be nice.
He supposed they thought they were being smart. Perhaps now that Kathy was older, it meant more money. But didn't the social worker visit during the time Kathy wasn't with them? Why weren't they arrested or something? How did fostering even work? Oliver felt an headache setting in so he mentally chided himself to stop thinking about it. This was the last thing he would do for Chris or his birth mother before he was out of there. He was done with the problems of both families. Fuck school. He had savings from since he was born. He was getting on a plane and disappearing for a long while. Chris could have the rest.
Chris. Chris was out on the planet to disrupt his half sane life. He was now sure of it.
The door suddenly opened that Oliver flinched as a middle aged woman stepped out. She stared at him inquisitively.
"Can I help you?"
Fuck, she didn't recognize him.
And then like clockwork, her eyes lit up. Oliver fought the urge to scream in her face. She hadn't even said a word.
"I know you. You're Jessica Borghese's kid"
Oliver prayed that this woman was a fan of his mother and not an hater because Oliver knew his mother had many haters. And why wouldn't she? His father was kind of a big (bigger) deal before she married him.
"Your mother is amazing"
Thank God.
"What brings you here? Are you in the wrong ward? I think you have the wrong room number"
"No, no. Kathy is a friend of mine"
That was a lie. From now till kingdom come, he and Kathy would never be friends. But he would say anything to get her to comply.
"Oh, why didn't you say so? Come in, come in"
She stepped out of the way for him to enter. Inside, Oliver almost turned at the sight that greeted him. The doctor said the surgery was successful. Then why she still hooked on so many machines? There was a literal tube in her mouth. The doctors also said she would make a recovery but would she really? Some cells in her brain did die. Oliver really needed to stop thinking that hard. Right then, he noticed the man, also middle aged, seated on the chair a few feet away from the bed Kathy laid on, reading a newspaper as if he were in his bedroom. Oliver really hated this people.
"Sam, this is Oliver, Jessica Borghese's son"
The man, Sam looked at him with little interest for a few seconds before going back to his paper.
"He's a friend of Kathy's. Do you understand that?"
Oliver would have laughed if he wasn't so pissed. Of course it was about the money his family had. It was always about the money.
The man made a non committal sound. He didn't show any interest but Oliver knew he was. It was money.
"Go on", the woman said to him.
Oliver moved until he reached her. He took his seat on the nearest chair and just stared at her.
She wasn't even moving at all. The only sign that she had life at all in her was the silent but constant beep of the heart monitor and at that moment, Oliver felt guilty he was the one seated there and not Lia or Chris. He wasn't family, not really. He didn't deserve to be among the first people to see her.
"There's someone else that would like to see her"
The woman groaned, "oh please tell me it's not that crazy woman who stole her from us"
Crazy woman. Lia.
The only crazy, sick demented person I see here is you.
But of course he didn't say that out loud.
"We should have pressed charges like I said"
"Let it go, Violette. She's with us once again"
"The thing is-" he interrupted the brewing argument. He would rather die than get caught up in another family feud.
But wasn't he caught up already?
Fuck.
"My boyfriend is that woman's son" the words were tumbling out of him mind. Oliver almost slapped himself. Where did that come from? But it was out in the open already.
"Boyfriend"
If Violette was homophobic on top of everything, he wouldn't be surprised.
"Kids these days", the man muttered.
Color me shocked.
"Yes. They deserve to see her for a few minutes, don't you think?"
Violette frowned. She didn't seem to be considering it. What a stubborn woman.
"I'll put in a good word for you to my mother"
He decided to stop beating about the bush. He didn't even have the time.
Her facial expressions changed immediately. She still wasn't smiling though.
"I suppose they could. But I will only allow a five minutes, nothing more"
And that was how ten minutes later, Oliver led Chris and Lia into the room. He didn't miss the dirty look Violette sent their way.
Chris immediately rushed to her and clutched her hand. Thank God he stopped crying and he looked significantly better. And why was Oliver even noticing his looks?
Ugh.
"You can't do that", Violette barked at Chris but he ignored her. He fought back a smile. She didn't know him at all.
Oliver stood behind and watched everyone.
This wasn't right. Kathy's true family was Lia. He had seen what Lia had done and the lengths she would go to protect her children. That was a mother.
"Okay, okay, time's up. That's enough. It's time for you to leave", Violette spoke suddenly.
Lia turned to face her and the look she sent her way made shivers run down his spine. She wasn't even frowning. His birth mom was truly scary sometimes.
Lia obliged though - the battle was bigger than her- trying to pull Chris along but as expected, he refused to budge.
"Please, can't we just stay?"
"No, we have to go?"
"Please let me stay. I don't want to go"
"Please get out of here", Violette spoke again.
"Chris, please"
"Please, I don't want to go". He was in tears again.
Oliver didn't know Chris could be so expressive. That sounded wrong.
"Chris"
"I said I'm not going. I'm not going", he was starting to get angry now. Oliver had not seen an angry Chris before, not really so he was tempted to watch though he knew he had to do something.
"Chris, let's go, now"
"No, I'm not. You can't make me"
It wasn't as fun as Oliver thought it would be. His gut ached. He moved forward until Chris was at arm's length.
"Come on" he tried to pull the boy away but was hindered by the strength he didn't know Chris possessed.
"No, I'm not leaving"
"You have to"
"I'll call the doctors. You're disrupting her peace. If she worsens, I'll sue", Violette threatened behind them.
"But I just want to stay with her"
Oliver moved closer until he was close enough to whisper into his ear,
"And you will, I promise but you have to leave first. I'll do everything I can to make sure she comes home with you, okay?"
At first, Oliver wanted to freak out because what was that? Then he thought Chris would push him away and yell in his face but he nodded instead. He let out a breath he didn't know he was holding.
He stepped back and stretched out his hand towards him.
"Let's go?"
Chris looked down at his hand as it it was strange but placed his in it as they walked out of the room, Lia in tow.
Outside, Chris thought. He could do this. One last favor and he was out.
He started to move away but realized he was still holding on to Chris. He tried to pull away but the hand in his tightened. He looked up at him. Chris shook his head.
"I'll be right back. I promise"
Chris still shook his head.
"I promise"
That seemed to do the trick as Chris slowly let go.
Oliver hurriedly walked away refusing to acknowledge the odd feeling about how cold his hand suddenly was. He brought out his phone and dialed a number. After a few seconds.
