Oliver couldn't sleep. He needed answers. He needed to know. It was late at night. The day went by so fast it was a little surprising. He'd refused to leave his room and the only person he'd seen was the maid who delivered his food. Both times, they tasted like sand paper. Through out the day, he heard his sister, Emilia's voice resounding through the house. He wondered how she would react when they told her the truth. She would probably be happy. He'd never treated her like a big brother should. Maybe she was adopted too.
"Fuck this"
He stood up and exited his room, closing the door as gently as he could, though it still made a sound. He really hated how big their house was sometimes.
I bet thier son's gonna love it.
He was being ridiculous.
He walked as quietly as he could to his father's office. He switched the light to illuminate the room. He hadn't needed light earlier. He knew the house like back of his hands. His dad's office was a different case though. He could count the number of times he'd been here since he was born on one finger.
He started to rummage his desk. He knew he should be more careful so as to prevent his father from knowing he was ever in here but at this point, he didn't care.
He wasn't hard to find a file that read St Maria Hospital.
"If you needed answers, you could have just asked one of us"
Oliver almost jumped at the new voice in the room. He turned to face his father. As discretely as possible, he tucked the file behind him underneath his shirt. He prayed his father wouldn't notice because he knew whatever his father would tell him wouldn't be the complete truth.
He then realized he was at the presence of his father. He couldn't remember the last time he was in the same room as him. His father loved his mother, he showed that with his actions everyday but he didn't do well as a father, especially with him. Maybe part of him knew he wasn't his son.
"I spoke to your mother earlier and we decided we would speak to the other woman"
That other woman is my biological mother, he wanted to say but he bit his tongue.
"We think it's best if we leave things as it is. That way, no one would get hurt"
Oliver was dumbfounded.
"What?"
"I know you're upset and you have every right to be but we both think it's for the best. I mean, she's- she doesn't have the means to take care of you and next month, you're going to be an adult next month and we've been your parents for almost eighteen years so does it really matter? These things happen"
Oliver tried to speak but couldn't. He wanted to tell his father how absurd everything was.
What about me? Didn't you think about how I'll feel?
Why wouldn't the words come out?
"In the nearest future, you're going to see things as we see it and you're going to thank us"
Oliver pinched himself. He wasn't dreaming. This moment was real.
"Go to bed, son. Your grandmother is visiting tomorrow. It's about to be a long day"
Slowly, he walked out of the man's office hoping his father was only joking, a sick joke, but still a joke and that he deserved to know his biological mother, his biological parents. He heard the switch of the light and the door closing. He then realized it wasn't a joke at all.
The moment he arrived in his room, he brought out the file and looked through it. If the people he had known as his parents wouldn't help him, then he would help himself.

      Seven hours
Kathy had been in surgery for seven hours and if Lia said she wasn't nervous, that would be an understatement of the year. She hadn't heard a thing since she was wheeled away for the surgery. She had been told by the doctor that it would be a long surgery but she needed to know, needed to know something. She wasn't certain but she was almost sure it was past midnight now.
She had been sitting for so long, her butt had lost all its blood flow. She turned to face her son who was playing a video game on his cellphone. The only thing he did throughout the hours of waiting was sleep and play videogames on his phone. Lia was so proud of him, she couldn't express how much. She knew he would be much more comfortable at home but each time she suggested it, he adamantly shook his head no. He hadn't verbally expressed his worry but Lia knew he was terrified, terrified that he wouldn't see Kathy again.
I really shouldn't think like this.
Kathy had been his support system these past few years. If anything happened to her, Chris would lose it.
She suddenly remembered the big news she had to break to him but quickly shook it off. She wouldn't worry about that now.
"Chris, baby. I'm going to get a coffee, do you want something, a snack bar? Juice?"
He shook his head.
"Are you sure?"
He stopped playing his game, thought about it and shook his head again.
Lia sighed. He assured her he didn't want anything but she still didn't know.
She stood up and went to look for coffee. Hospital's coffee would never ever taste good but it'll have to do.
She brought out her phone and scrolled to the message bar. She typed an apology to Lena, something she should have done hours before. Though she was a little bit disappointed she hadn't shown up but Lia didn't exactly have the nicest attitude. What she said to that nice nurse was also uncalled for. He was only showing that he cared. She hit the send button, put her phone to sleep and tucked it in the front pocket of her jeans.
At that moment, she looked up and her steps faltered that she almost tripped. She stared at the man who had a bandaged arm with a sling around his shoulder in shock and another emotion she almost didn't recognize: anguish.
No, it can't be, no.
Slowly, she walked after him praying that it was all in her head and was only imagining it because she needed all the support she can get. When she was close enough, she touched his good arm and a second later, the man turned around.
A large chunk of air exited Lia's lungs. She couldn't breathe.
The same expression she had earlier appeared on the man's face only thus time, regret swirled around his face instead of anguish.
Andrew.
"Li-"
Lia felt her fist move and punch the man before her before he could completely say her name.
