If Kathy said she wasn’t a bit worried as she stood at the entrance of the school she would attend for the next four years or so, she would be lying. But she doubted she would last that long.
She knew all about the antics of rich kids, her second family was one but she was still worried. A whole lot of them were snobbish, really spoilt and cared too much about hierarchy.
She wasn’t worried about herself but Chris. She would thread just fine but Chris wouldn’t. Chris was smart all right; he was talented and had an 'ok' grade. He would do well academically but interacting with others he definitely would fail at because he just couldn't.
She was worried they would crush him completely. She would stick with him though, even get expelled if necessary. She didn’t have anything planned for her future. She was lucky Lia took her in and didn’t throw her out like her other families so she would repay by looking out for him always and would help him become really successful, any means necessary.
The boy in question had his attention on someone from afar. The girl he was looking at stood typing away on her phone screen. She felt eyes on her and turned to face Chris who still didn’t stop staring even when discovered.
Irene stared back. She was curious why he was staring at her. Her; cute boys didn’t stare at her. She hadn’t seen him before.
He's definitely new. Better befriend him.
Irene smiled at him and waved a bit.
Chris on the other hand looked down immediately after being discovered. Irene’s smile immediately vanished as confusion set in.
A shy one, isn't he?
She decided she would talk to him later and walked into the school.
Chris raised up his head and followed her with his eyes.
Kathy oblivious to what happened a few seconds ago grabbed Chris’ arm.
“Come on, let’s go. We have to get our schedule from the administrative office”
She dragged him into the building.
Kathy’s jaw was on the floor as they stepped into the building.
She had never seen so many white in her life. The walls were white, the floors were white, and the staircases were also white.
Even the mother fucking lockers.
Everything was white. The hallway was filled with students all rushing to get to their lockers before class started.
Kathy’s eyes caught the vending machine and she wanted to hug because why not but she knew she had to maintain her composure but everything was so white she felt her black heart would stain it.
Kathy, chill you can do this.
“Chris, come on”
“It’s too white. No color at all”, he suddenly commented.
“Well, we can’t do anything about it, can we? We really need to get our schedule or we’ll seriously be late to our classes”
Fixing her school bag, they walked away. Thankfully, the two didn’t stick out like a sore thumb. They looked rich if Kathy did so herself. Lia had taken part of her savings and took them clothes shopping the day before. She refused to let her children be humiliated by snobby rich kids.

“So, that’s basically it. This is your first period class”, Jonah, a senior in his final year of his art program who had shown Chris around the school showed him to his first class.
Chris looked around.
“You don’t talk much, do you?” Chris still didn’t say anything.
“It’s alright, I get it. See listen, if you need anything or if anyone’s giving you a hard time, come to me. I’ll handle it” Jonah said with a smile.
Chris raised his hand and gave him a thumb up. He turned and pushed the door to his class open.
As Chris entered, the whole class quieted down including the teacher who was addressing the class.
Chris’ eyes caught a painting at the front of the class and he was immediately drawn to it. He let out a small gasp before moving to stand in front of the painting ignoring the students and teacher.
It was a painting of a unicorn. Chris had never seen anything more beautiful. He wished he could paint so beautifully.
The teacher on the other hand was in a mild state of shock as he watched the strange boy.
He cleared his throat to get his attention but the new student refused to turn.
What the…
“Um, new kid”
No reply. The students were beginning to snicker.
“Kid, hello”
Chris was too amazed with the painting to answer.
“Boy”
The class was already murmuring while some laughed and giggled.
Drew sighed as he looked at the new student. So he was one of those kids. The principal already informed the staffs that a new student who was offered scholarship by Mrs. Borghese was joining the school soon. He expected a well mannered kid.
Ah, well. Most of the kids aren’t shit anyways.
Drew walked towards him and grabbed his shoulder.
“Son, it’s your first day and you’re not making a first good impression”
Chris turned and looked down at the teacher, not saying anything. He hated that the man touched him but he didn't say anything.
Drew was taken aback.
Who is this kid?
“Is he one of those deaf and mute kids?” Drew heard one of them murmur so he was sure the whole class did.
It was 9:30 in the morning and he couldn’t wait for the day to be over.
“Why don’t you introduce yourself to the class, yes?”Drew signaled for him to start.
Chris turned to face the class and stared at them all before looking down again.
He wanted to go home.
“Maybe he really is deaf and mute” another student commented a little louder.
Chris pouted. He missed Kathy. She always knew what to say.
“What are you, 12? Pouting like a fucking kid. Why, do you need your pacifier?” One of the students at the back row yelled out as the whole class laughed.
Chris still didn’t say anything.
Drew just watched.
“Shut up, Jacob you’re just jealous you’re not as cute as him”, another student, a brown skinned girl retorted.
Jacob frowned and turned to glare at her. His frown is replaced with a evil smirk.
“Suck my dick, Balikis”
Some students laughed. Others didn’t find it funny.
Barkis rolled her eyes. She wouldn't exchange words with a bigot.
“Detention after class, Jacob”
Jacob rolled his eyes.
“Go take your seat anywhere you like”, Drew gestured to the empty seats in case he really was deaf or mute or both.
Chris left the front of the class and passed rows after rows. He felt eyes on him but he ignored them. He took the empty seat beside Barkis, the girl who stood up for him. Barkis smiled a bit. Chris settled on his seat.
“Ok, where were we? Right, page 6. New kid, share with Barkis for the meantime. I expect you to have yours by the end of the week”
Chris didn't give any affirmative sign. Drew was too worn out to call him out on it so he continued the class.
“I’m Barkis by the way. Welcome to our school”, she smiled softly in Chris’ direction.
Chris turned to face her. He smiled back.
“I’m Chris. Thank you for standing up for me”, he whispered so only her could hear.
The shock on her face almost makes Chris laugh. He let out a small giggle. Barkis recovered at that and smiled back.
“I think you and I are going to be friends”
