"The surgery was a success. Though still unconscious, Kathy is expected to make a recovery"
Lia didn't know a group of words could make her feel as if world order was restored but they did. She also didn't know the next few words she would hear would take away that world order.
"However, as Kathryn isn't yours legally or biologically, she won't be going home with you when she wakes", the doctor added.
Lia thought she heard wrong.
"What are you talking about? That doesn't even make any sense". Lena's question made her realize she heard correctly.
"It's part of our hospital policy"
What in the elite was going on here? This was never an issue before.
"I've raised Kathy for four years. So what it's not written in a piece of paper, she's my daughter. She's mine" Lia hated the way her voice sounded. She needed to be strong. They wouldn't take Kathy away from her.
"You'll have to take it up with her foster family. We've contacted them and they'll arrive shortly"
Lia couldn't believe her ears.
"The same foster family that abandoned her for years. Are you people crazy? Do you even hear yourselves?"
" Lia", Lena's voice was soothing. She didn't need to be soothed. She was angry.
" You can't do this"
" It's the law. I understand how you're feeling"
No you fucking don't.
"But Kathy is a minor and the only reason you're still standing here and not in jail is because her foster family detested from pressing charges"
A sound between a scream and a shriek exits Lia's lips. If she could wish for a super power at that moment, it would be one that could burn the doctor to ashes. And the tone at which he said the last statements was infuriating, as if he was telling her something as mundane as the benefits of vitamins. What freak show was she in?
"So let me guess, I can't see her"
The doctor didn't reply. She got her answer.
"I need to sit", she moved and sat on the nearest chair before she tumbled over. She felt Lena's presence beside her. She wasn't even in her 40s yet. She didn't need to look up to know the doctor had left.
"I don't know what to do now. God, when will it all be over?"
Lena grabbed her hand and turned to face her. Lena raised her other hand to wipe her tears. She hadn't even noticed. It was a miracle she still had any tears left to cry.
"It'll be alright. Kathy is your daughter. We're going to find this together. I'll speak to Jessica. She'll get her best lawyers-"
Lia groaned at the name and as ashamed as she was to admit it, Jessica Borghese had done enough. She couldn't ask for help anymore. Her ego and everything she believed in wouldn't let her.
" I can't possibly ask her to do that. She has done enough already and so have you"
" But-"
"I'm serious Lena. I can't"
Lena sighed but dropped the topic and for that she was grateful. Instead, she slowly rubbed  her hand soothingly. Lena was the best. Lia hoped everything would return to normal so she could show how much she appreciated the woman she was in love with.
"What are you going to do, then?" Lena asked after a moment of silence.
"For now, I'll wait", she replied. But Lia knew what she would do. She would beg.
Chris slowly opened his eyes. They felt heavy so he closed them and opened it again few seconds later. He looked around the room. He was alone. What had occured came back to him in flashes. It didn't really make any sense. He remembered crying, a lot. Why did he cry? He suddenly remembered Kathy and hurriedly sat up wincing. His head didn't hurt but his eyes felt really heavy. He tried to swallow and his throat felt like hot desert.
He looked behind him at the table behind the bed, grateful to find a bottle of water. He took it, uncapped the lid and took a significant amount of it. It seemed like drinking the water brought all his memories. He dropped the bottle and covered his mouth with his palm appalled by what he had done. Oliver must hate him. The door suddenly opened. Chris looked up to see Derek.
"Love, you're awake", he smiled at him as he walked towards the bed, sat on it and pulled Chris into his arms. "I was so scared earlier. I'm relieved you're okay"
He pulled him out of his embrace a few seconds later. Derek stared at him, then frowned.
"Are you okay?"
"Do you know where Oliver is?"
"What?"
"Oliver. I have to see Oliver"
Derek looked at him with confusion in his eyes. Why was he confused?
"Oliver is not here right now. He went home. Good news. Kathy's surgery was a success. The doctors have high hopes that she'll wake up"
"I really need to speak to Oliver", Chris said instead.
Derek blinked at him.
"I- I just told you your sister who earlier had one leg in the grave is back in the land of the living and you want to speak to Oliver?"
Chris didn't like the tone of his voice. Derek had never spoken to him like that before.
"Please, can you call him?"
" Oliver can wait. I expected you to be jumping in joy. You've been a mess ever since Kathy was rushed in here. You're on this bed right now because you couldn't comprehend what happened to her. The only thing that you should be thinking about right now is your sister"
" But I- please just call him"
" Are you still sick? Is that it?"
" I'll always be sick. The doctor said so"
"Fuck", Derek cursed under his breathe. "I don't know why I forgot. It's an autism thing, isn't it?"
Chris was so confused. It wasn't the confusion he felt hours ago. That time felt like he was out of his mind. Maybe he was still out of his mind.
" I'll get Oliver then"
" Are you mad at me?" He had to ask. It seemed Derek was. Kathy had one time said he was exhausting. It wasn't that he wasn't glad Kathy was fine. He was, more than anything but he wouldn't be able to do anything if he didn't see Oliver first.
Derek's hard eyes softened to the warm colour Chris was familiar with.
" No, no. I'm just- I'll get Oliver, okay?"
Chris nodded as Derek stood and walked out. He sat there, waiting. The door opened a little while after Derek left and Chris was surprised that Derek was back so soon but it wasn't Derek. It was his mom.
She smiled at him but she looked sad. He didn't like that.
"Can I get a hug?" She whispered that Chris almost didn't hear her. She was so sad. He really didn't like that. She moved towards him and sat at the edge where Derek sat earlier before she embraced him tightly.
"I'm so sorry Chris. I feel like I've made the biggest mistakes. I'm so sorry"
Why was she apologizing? She didn't do anything wrong.
"Because of me, you might never see Kathy again"
What?
"I'm so sorry baby. I even got you betrothed without your knowledge. What is wrong with me?"
What was happening? Was he in a dream? Was this the side effects of the pills? Was he hallucinating?
"What do you mean I'll never get to see Kathy again? Derek said she was fine"
"She is. She is. She should be but back then when Kathy came to us, I should have gone through the appropriate means to make sure she was mine legally but I didn't know this would happen. Her foster parents won't allow me see her. We might never see her again"
Chris was dreaming.
" I'm so sorry"
