It was the D day. The most dreaded day.
“Do I have to go?” Kathy groaned out as they all rallied to Lia’s car.
“Like all this fiasco doesn’t concern in anyway, like in anyway”
“You’re going anyway. Chris needs you for moral support”
Kathy continued to groan but entered the car anyway.
“You’re lucky I love you”, she said as she got settled at the back seat. Kathy never called shot gun because she knew Chris would always let her win because he was nice like that. Besides, it seemed mother and son needed to have a serious conversation. She closed her sending a silent prayer that the night didn’t end in too much disaster it was inevitably going to be.
At the front seats,
“Chris, baby, are you okay?”
Chris looked over at his mother as she pulled out of the driveway down the street.
He nodded at her and turned to his phone. He had discovered a new game and it was all he did all day. He even got detention after he was caught by his Maths teacher. He didn’t like the teacher and for the life of him, he couldn’t like Maths either. He was lucky to get a C+.
“Will you be able to speak tonight? They are going to ask you questions and I can’t answer them all for you”
“I think so”
The smile she let out at his reply made his insides feel warm. He loved seeing his mother happy. Except she wasn’t really his mother.
“Is Oliver going to come and live with you?”
From the back seat, Kathy let out a snort Chris didn’t understand.
“What? Of course not. No switch or change is happening tonight. Why would you even think that?”
“I just thought you were tired of me. If I was out of your life, everything will be easier”
Lia pressed on the brake suddenly and it had them all jostling forward.
“Fuck!” Kathy exclaimed from behind.
Lia turned to face Chris and he was surprised to see her, her eyes tear stained. He didn’t mean to upset.
“Oh Chris, you’re my whole world. You’re the greatest blessing this life has given me. Sure, it has not been easy but that has nothing to do with you. Nothing. I’m sorry if I’ve ever made you feel that way. I love you so much. I couldn’t let you go, no matter the price”
Chris felt himself smile at her. He didn’t do it as much as he wanted but her eyes immediately light up.
“I love you too”
The tears came back a second later. He didn’t and couldn’t understand adults.
They arrived in the Borghese mansion twenty minutes later. It was even bigger than any of them could have fathomed. They were stopped at the security check two miles way from the house but a phone call to Mrs Borghese cleared everything up. Lia promised herself she wouldn’t get mad tonight, for the sake of Chris...and Oliver. They alighted and walked towards the front door.
“Rich people will never cease to baffle me”, Kathy mumbled. Nobody needed that obscene amount of money.
They got to the front door and Lia rang the doorbell. The night had barely started and Kathy was already done with it. The door opened and expecting a butler, Kathy was surprised to see Lena, who had visited their home (former and new) a few times and who Kathy was certain was dating Lia. Sighting Lia, Lena smiled giving Lia heart eyes. Kathy wanted to coo and gag at the same time.
“Hey guys, come in, you’re just in time”
They were ushered in. Lena collected their jackets and handed it to a maid who walked away afterwards. If they thought, the exterior was grande, the interior proved them wrong. Kathy realized Lia hadn't stopped staring at Lena since they walked in. It was sickening.
The two women walked ahead of them and they followed closely. Chris was getting distracted by the paintings on the walls as expected. Kathy knew Jessica was a great painter but she didn't know just how great. She was even better than Chris but Chris would inevitably be better with a few more years of experience. As they walked further, they heard the giggle of a male voice. The voice didn't sound like Oliver's and Oliver was the only male child. The news said so, at least so who else was joining them?
Her curiousity is answered when they arrived at the great hall where the stairs were connected and in a corner, Oliver was joined in the hip (literally) with a redhead boy. Kathy recognized him as Paul. Chris had gone through a special obsession with him. She would have thought he had a crush but Chris was smitten by Derek. Whatever relationship he had with Derek weirded her out but what could she say? Chris was an adult now and Derek seemed like a nice man. Their relationship still weirded her out though.
"Guys it's time", Lena told the two boys. Paul had his head on his chest now.
Ugh, couples.
They started to walk again and the footsteps behind them said the two were too.
After walking for a few seconds, they arrived at their destination. Kathy looked around the grande table at the three adults and one child seated. There was nothing in the house that was almost not grande. Kathy had seen Jessica Borghese in school once when she visited and she truly was a very beautiful woman, almost as beautiful as Lia but no one was truly as beautiful as Lia. The child was obviously Emilia. She had seen Daniel Borghese on TV and truthfully, he was the older version of Chris. How didn't they see it before? The last person was an older woman and at first glance, Kathy had a bad feeling about her. She thought she had to be wary of
Jessica but the person who could potentially cause trouble was the grandmother.
