Hazel

It was the morning sunshine that woke me up. And Daisy.

  "Hazel! Wake up!"

"What time is it?" I sat up and rubbed my eyes. When my vision was clear again, I saw Daisy, her golden hair in two plaits trailing down her back and wearing a blue dress with long sleeves.

"Well, how do you expect me to know? I've told father that I will be with you, however, father said that we must return back to the house by dark. Oh Hazel, you're coming over again!" I nodded slowly.

  "That's nice," I said.

"Now hurry up and get dressed. Goodness Hazel, are you always like this in the mornings or is it just me?"

"It's just you Daisy," mumbled Lavinia. "Do we have to go?"

Daisy blinked. "Why, of course! Or, it'll just be me and Hazel having fun and you can stay with Patricia and also not see George," Daisy said rather stiffly.

Lavinia sat up. "No, no, I'm coming, I already said I would!" she answered hastily.

Once we were all dressed (I had my hair down and was wearing a lovely red dress Jie Jie had sent me for Christmas), Daisy looked all of us up and down. Beanie was wearing a floral dress and her hair was in simple back waves and Kitty was wearing a dress with laces and had her hair in a bun. Lavinia finally came out. She was wearing something Daisy would call unkept and scruffy.

"No, no, no. Lavinia, if you ought to know, we are impressing people to get into the crime scene. Do wear something...better," added Daisy.

"Wait," I remembered. "Alexander doesn't send you letters, does he?"

Daisy looked surprised. "Of course not Hazel," she said.

"Then how come you think that we're impressing people to get in?"

"Ah Hazel. It's what I know about detecting. Always dress your best," said Daisy, her expression unreadable.

"Do I have to change?," grumbled Lavinia.

"Oh yes, please do. You look terrible in that dress," said Kitty sarcastically.

"Thanks for that," said Lavinia. Daisy led Lavinia by the arm. When they came out, Lavinia was wearing one of Daisy's purple frocks. Her hair remained in a ponytail, but much more smooth.

"That's better," said Daisy with a proud look on her face. Lavinia mumbled something but I thought I saw a sign of appreciation that she was cleaner.

"We should go now," said Daisy, looking at the time. "It is most terribly rude to be late."

Soon, we were all seated in a phaeton. "Where to miss?" asked the driver, looking at our dresses.

  "Eastfield please," said Daisy sweetly.

"Aye, miss, you don't want to be making trouble there. A murder 'as just occurred," said the driver, looking around. Then he whispered, "I don't want to be making accusations, but ev'ryone thinks its 'er 'usband." Daisy's eyes widened, but before she could ask more, the driver beckoned the horses to move.

As we journeyed to Eastfield, Daisy looked at us, her eyes wide. "Did you hear that?" she asked excitedly. "About the husband murdering 'her'?

  "His wife?" piped up Beanie.

"Good work Detective Martineau," said Daisy. "The wife has been murdered and everyone thinks it's the husband. But why?"

"The wife's name is Mrs Blueberry, I've heard," I said, the bumpy road making my voice wobble.

"Mrs Blueberry? Who's name is after a fruit?" laughed Kitty. We all giggled a bit.

"Anyway-what on Earth are you staring at Lavinia?" asked Daisy. Lavinia was looking straight ahead. Beanie, Kitty and Daisy all turned their heads for they were at the front and I looked ahead. Up on the driveway were two boys, waving at us-George and Alexander.
