I knew it. I, the Honourable Daisy Wells, had already suspected it.
"You know you're saying that out loud, right?"
My eyes nearly popped out of my skull. I did not think of that.
"Hazel, begin drafting a response back to the girls this instant," I commanded, turning the attention away from my little mistake.
There was a shuffle of movement and I heard the scratch of a pen flying across a piece of paper.
"Daisy," Hazel piped up. "You don't think James stole Alice's ID card? To delay us?"
"If it means we have no way of proving Amber is Alice, then yes, that could be a possibility," I responded. I drummed my fingers on the desk. The sound of my fingertips hitting the hard surface seemed to thud loudly across the room.
"I'm back!"
James bursted in the room.
"I got bottled water, juice, crackers with dip, chee-"
"-James drop the act," I announced.
The groceries James was holding fell to the floor. "What?"
"It doesn't take much to figure it out. I already knew before everyone else suspected. You're here to keep an eye on us, aren't you?" I said dully, examining my now red fingertips.
I couldn't hear the scratch of Hazel's pen anymore.
"What on earth are you talking about, Daisy? I'm here to help you."
"Sure, but whatever you say, no one's going to believe you."
I looked at Hazel, and she looked at me back with an expression on her face that I knew too well. A little harsh there, but he deserved it.
"Fine," said James finally. "I was sent by my mum to meet Kitty, but that was because she wanted me to help with the case."
"And why's that?" questioned Hazel, suspicious.
James couldn't formulate a response. Instead, he changed the conversation. "But nothing else, I promise. My intentions are true. Whatever you've heard about me, it's not true. I promise," he repeated. "I want to find out the murderer as much as you all want to."
"Isn't that what we all want," I yawned. "I believe we already have our answer."
"What?" exclaimed James. "That fast?"
"Seriously?" asked Hazel.
"Of course," I said. "I, the Honourable Daisy Wells, have concluded, that Ms Haulings is the mastermind."
Hazel gasped and James looked completely dumbfounded.
"However," I interrupted. "In an investigation, everything follows the order of finding all the clues, piecing them together and then identifying the murderer. In our case here, we've found three quarters of the clues, pieced everything together and identified the murderer. We've skipped some steps. So we must not make a move yet."
"You're crazy," James finally blabbed out. "A big ego, and absolutely crazy. If I was planted there by the 'murderer', then wouldn't she tell me so I could help her in her plan?"
I scrutinised him directly in the eye. "But would you help her?"
James's mouth hung wide open. Hazel watched the scene unfold in shock.
"Exactly," I said smugly. "And trust me, you'd have a big ego if you were as clever as me." I tapped my temple.
James looked absolutely determined to contradict me. "What's the motive?"
