"Something's not adding up."
Daisy chucked the letter from George and Alexander behind her back; it floated around in a circle and came to a rest by her feet.
"Maybe Honey's just lying," James suggested.
Daisy stayed quiet. We locked eyes, and she gave me a look that said We need to talk. Alone.
"James," I piped up. "Could you get my hair ribbon please. It's somewhere in the other room."
"Sure," he said, before leaving.
After he left, I turned to face Daisy. "Hotels have really thin walls you know. And James is in the room right next to us."
Daisy waved me off. "No, but this is important. Tell me, how did James and all of us become 'friends'? It all happened so quick. It was all dismissed so quick."
I looked at her confused.
Daisy raised an eyebrow at me. "Well?"
I paused, gathering all my memories, and then responded. "Well, Kitty ran off upset and-"
"Aha!" Daisy jumped up. "Remember when Kitty was provoking me at Deepdean? The time when I slapped her? That was the Kitty we know. James appeared when Kitty was upset. She was vulnerable. And what happens when someone is vulnerable?"
"They're easier to open up," I said slowly. "Wait, are you saying-"
"Yes." Daisy's voice got quieter. "James was planted there. Who in their right minds would be suddenly in on this plan to solve some random murder with some random people whom they just met? And what's even more mysterious, is that he's Ms Haulings's son! Ms Haulings is a suspect! And-and, Hazel, what if he was here to keep an eye on us!!"
Before I could tell Daisy that she needed a drink of water to calm herself down, we heard a commotion outside the room. I looked back at Daisy; her hair was wild, and her eyes looked like those of a maniac's. I must admit, I was a little frightened: this was never Daisy! But I decided to tell her that later.
"Did you hear that, Hazel?" Daisy asked, narrowing her eyes.
I nodded and we both headed outside. We never thought we'd find James arguing with...
Alice.
She saw us, and her shoulders sagged with relief. "Finally, you two!" she exclaimed, exasperated. Alice tried rushing to our side, but James stopped her.
"Where'd all this come from?" James asked. "You were just trying to avoid us. And now you wanna help us?"
Alice glared at him. "Running isn't going to get me anywhere. Maybe if I tell my story, all will be forgiven. I mean, it's better late than never," she added, looking at Daisy and I hopefully.
Daisy patted her hair down, trying to look neater. "Yes, come in I guess. But you're here to tell us the truth. No lies."
Being a detective for quite some cases has taught me that words, were just words. There was no stopping anyone for lying. What was more important, however, was finding out why they lied.
But I still nodded, trying to look as stern as possible. James looked like he wanted to say something, but with one piercing look, Daisy silenced him.
"I ran, because I thought the murderer was coming after me," Alice began.
Firstly, Alex and George get a shocking discovery, I think. Now us too?
"And why's that?" Daisy said, folding her arms, taking control of the atmosphere like she always did.
"Interrupt me any time," Alice said. "But do keep in mind: I have a story to tell, and I want to get it out with."
