As Hazel hurried up upstairs again, I turned back to Lavinia. She had finally decided that it was best to move and not to be staring up into nothing like one of those statues father had wanted to buy, but mother completely refused. "What?" Lavinia demanded.
"Nothing," I said quickly. I did also think to myself about Hazel and her letters. There was now a pile of letters from Alexander which she had put face down on her bedside table that she wouldn't let anyone see. It was utterly ridiculous.
"I wasn't going to spread it around," Kitty murmured. I raised my eyebrows at her.
"You were," I pointed out, defending Hazel. "You just didn't want to admit it." Kitty flushed.
"What about Amina?" I froze, then turned to Beanie, who had spoken quite shyly.
"What about her?"
"Oh no, you mustn't that I'm ruining the detectives oath by not keeping it a secret, it's just that, well, I thought she might be a good detective, only on this case!" Beanie added rather quickly.
"No," I hissed. "She's already been with us on a case before. She is not coming with us."
"But she is a member of the Detective Society," Beanie protested.
"Ooo, Daisy, there goes Amina!" interrupted Kitty slyly. Even though it seemed like Kitty had saved me (which she will never accomplish), she actually wanted me to answer to a harder remark. I spun around and looked. Amina was cheerfully waving at us.
"Daisy, there are two bright pink spots on your cheeks which make you look like a doll," said Lavinia.
"That's because I am one," I said crossly, not wanting to admit that I was flushing on the inside as well. "And a perfect one."
"Baba also calls me a doll sometimes." Amina had joined us.
"No. You are not a doll. You are never going to be like me, ever," I mumbled. In normal times, I would've hissed at her, but I did not want to. Why? I do not, and will never, like her. Or maybe...?
No. I shook that feeling off me.
I glanced to where Hazel had ran off to. In desperate times, oh, how I wished Hazel would stand next to me.
Amina's voice jarred me back to their conversation. "Daisy, I was thinking if maybe I could visit you or Hazel's home in Hong Kong. You know, get to know you two a bit more," said Amina. I looked at the others, whom were all waiting for my response. Amina opened her mouth once more, probably to say something like, Since you've met my Baba and Mama and then I'd be forced to answer her, but thankfully, Hazel saved me by reappearing once more.
"I've told Alexander that we will be there," she said, unaware of Amina. Amina frowned. Oh Hazel, just when I thought we could get away from keeping it a secret, I thought.
