"What do you think they're doing now?" Beanie murmured, spread out on the couch opposite me.
I sighed. "I don't know Beanie," I said. "I hope they're all all right. I just can't believe James would go as well without telling any of us."
Beanie sat up from her position. "Why did he not tell any of us? I thought he'd tell you at least."
Her words made me think deeply. "Well..."
"You know," said Beanie hotly. "Something's not right about him. Kitty, since when have you ever let someone become friends with you that easily?"
"She's right." Lavinia came into the room, holding a tray filled with cups of tea. She put them down and gestured for us to take some. "You're never like that, Kitty."
"I think I just needed someone to talk to that day. And...I guess he just appeared when I needed it. It was like fate wanted us to meet."
Beanie nearly exploded out of her sweet temper.
Lavinia looked at me as if I was dumb. "That wasn't fate. That was no coincidence. I bet Daisy and Hazel would've thought about this by now, but, I reckon he was put there by someone. Someone knew we were investigating this case and decided to slow us down. I've already told George and Alexander too," she said, interrupting the remark I was about to make.
"B-But," I spluttered.
"George has been telling me things about the investigation," Lavinia said. I looked at Beanie, who was listening intently, brows furrowed, nose scrunched.
She looked almost too cute like that.
"Them and the girls have been keeping up to date. The girls do think that about James, and they want the boys to snoop around a bit more. Interview John. Find out where those documents went. Snoop around Ms Haulings and Edward. That's their plan. But the boys can't do that quick enough; that would take days. So we've got to help."
Beanie nearly dropped her tea with excitement. Before she could say anything, I interrupted her.
"Wait, wait, wait, wait, WAIT..."
Lavinia rolled her eyes.
"What's the use of being part of the Detective Society if we're gonna leave everything to four people?" mentioned Lavinia. "Come on, Kitty. They're our friends. We need to help them."
I opened my mouth, but it betrayed me, and my words ceased to come out. Beanie reached across and shook my arm slightly.
"She's got a point," Beanie said kindly. "What if James is a suspect? What if he's not what he seems?"
The next day, we had thrown on random shirts (much to Lavinia's satisfaction) and were rolling around near Ms Haulings's house.
