Kitty

I stormed away, leaving Lavinia and George to surely kiss. Tears began to fall from my cheeks. I angrily wiped them away. I stopped. Where was I? I didn't even know where I was going. I stared at my surroundings. I could see the sea. Glittering, shimmering and in different shades of blue. I fell silent as I processed what had happened. I had yelled at George and Lavinia. I had denied the fact that I liked Beanie. Which was true. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes it was. Yes. Yes. No. No. Wait, what?

Impossible. I was sure I liked Beanie, but now with the fact that George and Lavinia may be onto me, I felt like I had to resist Beanie. I had to push her away from me. And they were going to tell Daisy. Everything. Tell everyone. Tell everyone that I could have a liking for Beanie. And what would Beanie do? What would be her reaction to all of this? I had read before, that best friends often misunderstood love when it came to each other.

  Could Beanie react like that?

I slumped down against a tree. My dress was dirty and my hair ribbon was lazily hanging untied around my shoulders. I started bawling. Everyone playing on the beach stared at me. Some disgusted, some curious and some with sympathy in their faces.

That's when a hand tapped me. It was a boy, definitely older than me, but amazingly attractive. He smirked. "Are you alright?"

I glared at him. "No! I'm not! Now back off!" I told him with a threatening voice. He laughed at me. He. Laughed. No he didn't. Yes he did. He. Laughed. At. Me. This was ridiculous.

  "I'm James," he said.

  "Kitty," I sniffed.

"Why are you crying?" he asked. That's when I lost it. To a complete stranger I just met, not even one minute ago. I told him about my friends and Beanie and all of their suspicions. I finally broke down and wailed more. He had taken a seat next to me and was patting my head awkwardly.

"There," he said uncomfortably. "Yes, Katy, I mean, Kitty, let your emotions pour out. Better out than in." I sobbed uncontrollably into his shoulder. He smelled like boys but with a hint of lavender. Or maybe it was just my nose.

                                                                                      * * *

I woke up to find myself drooling. Yes. Drooling. Beanie had always told me I drooled in my sleep, but I just laughed weirdly. As always, I was a big chump. I sighed dreamily. I was in a bed, the colour brown. Wait. It was too small to be a bed. My eyes travelled further. I spied legs. And shoes. And...the ground. I jerked my head up. James, who had been snoring peacefully, woke up with a start. It was dark and there were not a lot of people walking around. I cursed myself, and James. "You chump!" I hissed. "You let me sleep in your lap!" He grinned. I groaned. "How am I supposed to find my friends?" I muttered.

"KITTY! KITTY! PLEASE, WHERE ARE YOU?" I jolted straighter. "Beanie!" I whispered excitedly.

"OI YOU, GET OUT OF WHEREVER YOU'RE HIDING!" yelled a gruff voice: Lavinia.

"Kitty! We all miss you and uhm-OW! George!" That was Alexander.

"Be more loud, will you? DON'T MIND ALEX, HE'S GOING ALL SICK WITH HAZEL AND STUFF AND IF AFRAID OF OFFENDING HER!" hollered out...George. Daisy and Hazel had not yet called for me.

I felt hurt, then..."THERE'S NO USE! I CAN'T SEE A THING!" complained what surely was Daisy.

"Daisy! You know we have to keep searching!" said Hazel. They all continued, yelling for me. Beanie sounded like on the verge of tears now.

"I'M OVER HERE!" I yelled. It was silent before they were all scrambling towards me.

Daisy reached me first. "Why, Detective-"

"KITTY!" Beanie tackled me in a huge hug. The rest of them arrived, all puffing and panting.

James was frozen. "These," he spluttered out. "They're your friends?"

I nodded. "Guys, this is James. James, that's Beanie, Lavinia, Hazel, Hazel's soon to be boyfriend Alexander-"

Alexander started to complain loudly. "Why is everyone saying Hazel's my girlfriend, she's not!" he blushed.

"I said soon to be," I said impatiently. "Anyways, George, Lavinia, they're lovebirds, yes, and that," I paused at Daisy.

"Is the Honourable Daisy Wells?" said Daisy smugly.

  "Yes." I rolled my eyes.

"Uh, hi guys," said James, with a attempt at a smile. Alexander and George's eyes widened, smiling at him.

"I think," said George, clearing his throat out.

Daisy exploded before him. "YOU WERE HANGING OUT WITH A BOY?" I sighed.

  "Yes, well-" I began.

"She's probably in love with me too," interrupted James. Everyone was silent. The boys started laughing. All of the girls turned to them.

"Alexander," said Hazel seriously. "Stop laughing-" But they didn't. James looked quite pleased with himself before I kicked him in the shin. He grimaced painfully.

  "All good," he said nervously.

"Hmmm," Hazel studied James. For some reason, I felt...protective. Why should Hazel be staring at him? What happened next shocked me, as much as Daisy. "Anyway, we're detectives and we're solving a crime. Would you like to join us?" Alexander and George immediately stopped laughing. Daisy hissed. Beanie just smiled, and so did I. I liked James already, yes why shouldn't he help us? Lavinia gaped. Hazel started spilling everything to James. After she'd finished, James looked intrigued.

"Yes," he murmured. "I think I'll help."

Daisy was outraged. "F-Fine!" she spat out and turned on her heel and marched away. Soon, we all heard a thump and an "OW! Which dumb person planted a tree here?" We all laughed. Daisy was really quite clumsy when we had done something without her permission.

"And you didn't let Amina join, but you let James!" called Lavinia. We all laughed harder. Daisy appeared into view, annoyed, but she hid a smile as she pretended to tell us off.
