K A I R A
I picked the sharpest knife of my kitchen. “I have to do this.” I was pushing it in my stomach when it stopped in mid air.
Hell no. I couldn't do this. I couldn't be selfish.
“Do it Kaira or else stop dreaming.” I heard my own voice. I saw myself standing at left side, leaning against the kitchen door. “What about the child ?” again a voice came, it was familiar.
I saw my other form ,right side. I backed away a little.“Why are you thinking about the child when you doesn't even know whose it is ?” the left one said, dusting her palms.
“Yes, you doesn't know but atleast you're it's mother, right?” the right one exclaimed.
A drop of tear escaped from my eyes. “M-Mother ? I am a mother.” I mumbled, still confused if I should be blissful or I should hit my head against the wall due to the furious fire of anger inside me for myself. For letting him do whatever he wanted that night.
“So what ? Because of it your carrier will dump.” the left one rolled her eyes.
“It's okay. You can build it up again but if your harmed an innocent soul. Will you ever able forgive yourself ?” the right one frowned.
“Being a little selfish doesn't harm,” the left one chuckled.
“No Kaira. Don't even think of that.” the right one protested.
They started fighting,“DON'T DO IT” “DO IT !” “BEING A LITTLE SELFISH DOESN'T HARM.” “DON'T HARM AN INNOCENT SOUL.” “YOU DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHOSE CHILD IT IS.” “BUT THINK ABOUT THE CHILD. YOU'RE IT'S MOTHER.”
“STOP. STOP. STOP. GO AWAY. I DON'T NEED YOUR OPINIONS. LEAVE ME ALONE.” I cried covering my ears. I looked up, no one was there. I threw the knife away. I lied on the cold floor like a ball. I was crying mess.
Presents time, I didn't realise I was tearing up until a soft hand wiped it away. It was Sakshi. She had angry tears in her eyes,“What about uncle and aunty ?” I glared at my lap.
“M-Mumma, pa-pa. I want to say you something.” I exclaimed. “Afterwards. First have something. You look so fragile.”mumma scolded me. “Mumma please, it's important.” I increased my pitch. Dad's gaze shoot to me,“Change that attitude.” I sighed,“please listen to me.”
Mumma caressed my cheek,“What child ?”
My eyes welled up, I bit my buttom lip hard. “I-I a-am,” my heart raced. How would I say them ? I was breathing heavily. “WHAT. IS. IT ?” dad queried, seriously.
“I am p-pregnant.” I whispered. “YOU WHAT ?” mumma got up, shocked and fuming. “I am pregnant.”I admitted.
“Who is the father ?” My breathe almost stopped at dad's question. He examined my face,“WHO. IS. THE. FATHER ?” mumma gritted her teeth.
“I don't know. I tried to search for him but it seems impossible but d-don't worry. I will take care of this child, promise. I won't let it happen anything.” my cheek stung by a slap. I stared mom, staggered.
“Don't you have any shame ? Or sold it with your purity ? How can you do this? This is our sacraments ? This are what I taught you?” mumma shouted whereas, dad dropped his body on the couch. He pulled out his specs and pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Now what have you decided ?” dad didn't look at me. “I am sorry papa. I promise, it's all an accident. I was drunk and then what happened I didn't remember anything. Please. I am really guilt and ashamed of my deed.” I begged for forgiveness.
“Will you do, if I say you to do something ?” I glanced dad with hopeful eyes and bobbed my head, happily,“YES. YES.”
“Abort this child.” I stood up,“what ?” mumma half cupped my face and gave me an emotional look“please child. For us. Please Kaira.”
“MOM , ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND ? YOU PEOPLE ARE CRAZY.” I spoke in fury. “Choose one. Family or this illegitimate child.” dad gave me options.
I clapped my hands.“Wow. What a great parents you are ?”, “I would appreciate to carry this child instead of living with parents like you."dad and mumma were astonished as the answer must be bombshell for them.
“AND DARE TO CALL THIS CHILD ILLEGITIMATE. NOT UNTIL I AM ALIVE. I PROMISE ONE DAY YOU WILL REGRET YOUR WORDS.” I yelled at their faces while tears streaming from my eyes.
I barged out. Some neighbor were peeping into our house. I shoot a glare to them making them gulp.
After a week,
It was a clear day. I was working in my office when my manager suddenly called me,“Kaira Aggarwal. Can you please come to my cabin ?”“Right away, sir.” I made my way to his office cabin. “Ms. Aggarwal. This is your suspension letter.” he kept a envelope infront of me. I opened it instantly and read it carefully,“What ? Why ? What I did ?”
“The whole office talks about you and your..umm..unborn child. They are complaining to work with you. And also some unpleasing rumours are spreading around about you and as well as about our company which is causing a great loss for us. And it's not only my decision , it's the headquarter's order.” he announced.
“I would suggest you something." He murmured. I raised an eyebrow. “Perform an abortion. Or else you will destroy your future and career.”he gave his so called suggestion.
“oh so now, I will destroy an innocent soul's future for my career ? The child who haven't took a single glance on this earth. Doesn't it deserve a life ? It is not the one in fault. The society is the one in fault.” I dashed out.
A clapping sound brought me out of trace. I spot Sakshi clapping, all joined her except the boss. He just stared at my face with some other expression.
“Really. I am feeling proud to be your best friend.” Sakshi beemed. “Honestly, in my whole career I have never seen someone like you. You left your family for your unborn child. I mean many couple or women comes to me for abortion many of them would be sluts. But I've never seen someone like you.”the doctor stated.
