IN THE distance, a white boat is speeding towards them. "Do you recognize that boat?" Pope asked. "I've never seen it." Kie answered the boy, glancing at him. "What are they doing here anyway? The marsh is closed." Jake says, crossing his arms. "I don't know but let's not stick around to find out." JJ says.
"JJ, get the bowline."
"Yeah." He says as John B walks to the controls. "Should we wait on 'em?" Pope glanced at the boy. "No, we're not gonna wait on them. Go get the stern. Go!" John B tells him. "Are you joking? JJ, hurry up." Kie says. "Guys, don't wait for me. Go." JJ says as he pulls the anchor up and the boat got closer.
"I don't like the look of this." John B says. "Are they coming for us?" Jake says, furrowing his brows. "Maybe they're fishing." Pope says. "Just go." Jake tells John B right away. "Go, go, go." JJ hurriedly says as the boat follows them. "Go into the marsh." Pope says. "Let's go!" Kie said, sounding panicked. "Act natural."
The boat keeps following them and Kie spoke up, "guys, they're following us." She informs them and they all glanced back. "Oh, this can't be good." Pope says and John B looks ahead. "Shit." He says under his breath.
"Dude, you gotta go faster!"
"I'm going!"
"Gun it!"
The five keep looking back at the other boat as John B is driving. And then it went off, a gun shot that made them all duck down. "Holy shit, guys!" Kie said, sounding scared. "John B, get down!" Jake tells the boy who leaned down over the controls. "Oh, my God, we're gonna die!" Pope exclaimed and then another gunshot went off. "Shit! Pope, move." Kiara said as she got up and Jake looked at her. "Be care--" He's cut off when another gunshot went off.
"Get down, Kie!" John B shouted to her but she just goes to the back of the boat, holding a net. Jake and John B watch her toss it into the water behind them, it slows down the other two men as it gets coat on their boat motor. "Oh, my God!" JJ said when they all stood back up and Jake looks at Kie. "Nice job with the net, Kie," he raised his hand and they do a handshake as she smiled widely at the boy.
"That was insane!" She says, looking at ths other boys as she laughs and Jake laughs, walking over to the front to take a seat. After arriving at the Chateau, Jake picked up his backpack and sighed, following after John B up the tiny ramp of the dock and Kie walks behind him with JJ and Pope. They gather around John B. "What do you guys think it is?" Kie asked.
"Gotta be money or something, right?" John B says. "That or a couple of keys with street value to the low- to mid-mils, man!" JJ says as John B goes ooh. "Can we please just open the bag?" Pope said immediately making the others look at him. "Wow, Pope. That's a rare outburst of emotion from you." John B says, glancing at JJ before looking down at the bag. "Okay, you guys are literally killing me with anticipation. Just open the bag." Pope says and Jake laughs, glancing up at Kie who's smiling.
"Jeez."
"We almost died over this."
John B takes out a bag from the bigger bag he then opens to reveal a large metal canister which he then has to twist open. He tilts it to the side, and out comes a compass. He opens it and Jake furrows his brows. "A compass?" He says curiously and Pope stood up.
"Oh, wow. Yup. That's about right. Good job, everybody. We found a compass." He says but Jake can see the look in John B's eyes. "Dude, what? It's not worth anything." JJ tells the boy. "This was my father's." He says.
And then just like that, Pope said he had to get home so he left and so did Jake, JJ and Kie so they all parted ways. Jake, of course, making sure John B was okay before he left. "I have to work tomorrow, so... I'll see you guys the day after tomorrow." He nods, walking away and John B waves at the boy.
At home, Jake smiled upon seeing Evie in the livingroom, playing with her toys. "Was she good?" He asked his mom who nods, walking out of the kitchen with a smile. "Yeah, she behaved so well all day, I think she really missed you though." She says and Evie stood up, holding herself up with the coffee table, "dadda," she says, raising her arms meaning she wanted Jake to pick her up. "Hold on, love." He says, putting his backpack down.
He picks up his daughter and kisses her cheek, smiling widely at her reaction. He sits down at the couch, sighing. "I had a long day." He says, rubbing her back gently and Evie rested against him. He sighs, leaning back and his mom walks back into the kitchen. "I'll make you something to eat, sweetheart." She says.
"I have work tomorrow." He explains, standing up and setting down Evie by the toys. "I'm sure that grandma will be available to watch her. I also have to work." His mother sighs as he sat down at the table, staring down. He glanced over at the woman moving around the kitchen, cooking and smiled faintly. "I'm always so sorry I messed up my teen years and... burdened you and grandma this way." He rested his head.
"No, don't say that, Jake... I mean, I wish I had been more clear on the fact you have to use protection rather than keeping you away from girls." She sighs, opening up the cupboard and grabbing a plate. "I was scared I'd end up like the man you said was my dad... I didn't expect to end up being left by her mom." He looked over at Evie. "You're doing great, Jake... she knows how much you love her and you have us to help you." She said and glanced at Jake.
"Here," she says, setting down a plate with grilled cheese sandwiches and a bowl of tomato soup. "Thank you, mom." He smiles and she leans down, kissing his head. "I have to go do the laundry." She says and he nods.
He eats his food and once he was done, he put his plate and bowl away before picking up Evie. "Bedtime, alright, honey?" He says and Evie just rubs her eye, looking around. In his room, he laid Evie down and handed her her bottle before he got into his bed next to her crib.
