JAKE SPENT the night at his grandma's and the next morning when he's eating cereal and having coffee, she asked him what was wrong, sitting down by him. "Did you know? About my father?" He asked and she just let out a small sigh. "Listen--" "so you both just decided to keep it from me?" He asked.
"I told her that it'd be good for you to know. But she said the memories were too painful. And when Evie came along, I told her he'd be very helpful, probably happy to have a granddaughter. But she said that neither you or Evie need his pity or money. And now with Olivia back, threatening full custody, I told her it'd be good. For you to know so he'd help you. But still, she wouldn't let up." The woman explains and Jake just glanced away.
So his mom really only told him because of Ward Cameron's death. "I'll get her," his grandma says right away when Evie began crying from the guest bedroom. He feels his phone buzz in his pocket, so he took out his phone to see a text from Kie.
Hey. You ok? Text me as soon as you can. He stared at the text and glanced up before looking down at his phone again. He replied right away saying yeah. Just had to see Evie. She will probably understand. Evie is always his number one, will always be his number one priority. Oh, okay. Well, the guys and I are just hanging out with John B, trying to cheer him up and stuff. You coming by later? She asked and he just stared at the text message.
I think I'd rather be alone with Evie right now. Just a lot going on. He replied and she replied with an oh... Okay. Well, talk tmrw? He replied with a thumbs up emoji and set down his phone, sighing as he rubs his eyes.
"Oh, there's my girl." He smiles when his grandma walked out, holding his daughter. "I'm gonna make her something real quick to eat, she seems hungry." The woman says, handing her over and Jake held his daughter close, just kissing her cheek repeatedly as his baby girl giggled and cooed quietly.
He smiles widely, staring at her. This was it. His whole world right here, in his hands. "I love you." He whispers before kissing her cheek again and she just held her hands over his face, babbling a bit. Almost as if she's saying she loves him back. "So... what exactly did your mom tell you about? Did she mention... everything?" The woman asked, bringing over a plate of some scrambled eggs and cut up fruit. "Um... she mentioned the letter. And his business. That's it." He merely answered with.
"Evie, come on," she held out her hands and the teenage boy hands over the baby. "Well... what are you gonna do about it?" The woman asks now as she began feeding her great granddaughter. "I don't really know yet..." Jake stared at his bowl and cup. "Are you gonna go to him? Ask him for help with the custody stuff?" She asked and he shrugs.
"Don't have to, Olivia agreed with shared custody... I mean, if I went to meet him, I think I'd just have questions for him, you know?" He asked, glancing over as his grandma fed his daughter, the woman smiling at the baby. "I mean... yeah. But you also could ask your mom the same questions." She says and he shrugs, glancing away. "I guess..."
"Hey, can you watch Evie for a bit? I'm gonna go for a walk. Clear my head." He says, heading into the kitchen to put away his mug and bowl now. "Of course, Jake." On his walk, he mostly listened to his music and looked around at the scenery. No matter how shitty life is on the Cut, it also... looks nice.
He was just listening to Lover, You Should've Come Over by Jeff Buckley when he heard a car honk, very faintly, so he took out one of earbuds and turned to see a Honda Civic. Of course. Olivia Grey pulls up by him, smiling as she took off her sunglasses and rolled down the window. The smile fades, seeing the solemn look on Jake's face. "Hi Jake... are you okay?" She asked, kind of scrunching up her nose and Jake just stared at her, unsure what to say. "I heard about Ward..."
He just glanced away, yesterday's events flashing in his mind. The boat exploding, Sarah's crying face and John B's reaction. "I'm okay, Liv." Jake simply says and Olivia nods softly, just staring up at him. "I was about to come see Evie actually... but do you wanna join me? We can drive around and just talk." She says and Jake looks at her for a moment with a bewildered face. "Not like the talks we used to have." She clarified quickly to him.
"Actually... I need you to drive me somewhere."
When they arrived to the Yukimura Autoshop, Jake just stared at the building. "Hey, are you sure about this?" Olivia asked suddenly so he turned to look at her. "I deserve to know about my dad. You know how much it meant to me that Evie has one around..." He said and she just glanced away, nodding.
"Okay. Well, I'll be here waiting." She simply says and Jake nods, looking back to the building before hopping out the car. He walked towards the front door, paused for a moment before walking in. He spotted a woman by the front desk, speaking to the receptionist. He was gonna walk over confidently and ask to see the boss, the owner, whatever you may call him, but then a man walked out.
From an office and approached the woman, she was smiling and immediately embraced him when he reached her. He looked familiar. "Hi Mr. Yukimura," she said and brought him into a kiss. Okay. Yeah. That's his dad. Jake just stared then simply turned back around and walked out, rushing towards Olivia's car.
"What? What happened?"
"Can you just drive me home, please?"
