VIII. We're Okay.

    

     "SHIT," KIE grunts behind Jake. "You okay?" He asked her and she hums. "Mm-hmm. Just... it's more gross than I thought." She says. "Kiara, Jake, find anything yet?" Pope calls out to them. "Yeah, do you guys see the gun?" JJ added shortly afterwards. "Nothing."

"It's probably at the bottom of the catch basin." Pope replied back and Jake sighs. "Of course it is." He murmured as he finally reached the end, grunting. He lands softly into the water, looking up to see a manhole above them before looking at Kie, "come on." He grabs her arms but the two of them slip when she's inside the catch basin, falling on top of him as he leaned back, trying to grab onto the ladder.

"Woah, you okay?" She says and he nods, standing up and pulling her up with him. Kie and Jake began looking through the catch basin together when Kie tossed a pop can. "People are so shitty." She says and he sighs. "No kidding... imagining Evie grow up on a dying planet honestly breaks my heart." He says and she glanced over at him.

"Hopefully people will be more environmentally friendly by the time she's older." Kie says and Jake smiles at the thought. Hopefully. Kie then grimaced and made a disgusted noise at something she found on her arm. "Jake, Jake," she says and he rushed over to her side. "Guys, I think we found something!" Jake yells and Kie cringed. "Ugh, gross." She says and Jake tries to help her. "Wait, you got it?"

But what Jake and Kie bring to the surface was not a gun. "Oh! Oh, my God!" Kie yells in disgust as Jake's eyes widen. "You guys, there's something dead in here!" Kie shouted to the guys. "Like a person?" Pope hollered back and Kie screams so Jake looks at her. "Relax, relax, alright?" He grabs her arms.

"Guys! There's something dead!" He hollered to JJ and Pope again. "Jake, don't touch it! That's how you get worms!" JJ hollered making Jake roll his eyes. "What is it? Is it Gavin? Don't touch it!" They kept shouting back and forth.

"You guys owe us for life!" Kie shouted as she and Jake continue to search through the catch basin. "Wait, wait, wait, what's that? Jake." Kie grabs onto Jake's muscle tank and he turns around. "Oh, shit." He says when he saw the water moving fast. "Guys, the water!" They shout in sync back to JJ and Pope.

"Kiara! Jake! Get out of there now!"

"We don't have time! Guys!" Kie shouted as Jake felt something hit his leg so he immediately reached down, feeling the gun which he then stuffs into his waistband at the back. "Jake," Kie panicked, grabbing his arm and he instantly climbs up the ladder with her as the water beats against their bodies, getting to the top. "Please! Pope! JJ!" Kie hits the cover as Jake tried his best to push it up.

"Guys! We're over here!" He shouted, one arm around Kie's waist with his hand on the ladder as the other arm is trying to push the manhole up. "Kiara! Jake!" JJ and Pope are running towards them. "Kie! Jake! We're coming!"

"Guys! Hurry!" The two boys then came into sight. "The water is coming up!" She says as the two boys kneel. "Kiara! Jake!" Pope panted out. "Kie! Jake!" JJ says as he and Pope grab the manhole. "Pull! Pull it!" Kie said as Jake tried to help JJ and Pope, pushing up and Kie does the same. "Pull, pull!" All four grunt as the water got higher, up to their necks.

"Hurry! Hurry!" Jake shouted. "Guys! Guys! Please! Please!" She said and Jake looks up at them. "Don't worry, guys, we're gonna get you out of there. I promise!" Pope said right away as JJ took out his pocket knife. "Come on!" Pope says to the blond who cuts at rhe edges of the cover. "JJ! Pope!" Jake says.

The blade comes off from the knife, falling inside and then they went back to trying to pull it up. Jake and Kie were now fully submerged into the water, holding in their breaths as Jake held onto Kie tightly in his arms. The two clearly start to panick as they're no longer holding their breaths so when the manhole cover came off, Jake immediately tried his best to go up and pulled her up along with him.

He coughs and spits, feeling disgusted by the sewer water that was in his mouth as he tried to catch his breath. She coughs and gasped, some of the water coming out of her mouth as he kneeled next to her. "Kiara? Are you okay?" Pope asked the girl worriedly who begins retching, holding herself up.

"Kie?" Jake says and she sat up, looking at him as she tries to catch her breath. "I'm okay." She murmurs and leaned over to him, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Are you?" She asked and he nods, as he hugs her back, seeing Pope watch them before looking away.

"Oh," Jake pulled back, reaching behind his back to take out the gun he had stuffed into his pants. "This wasn't what we were looking for, right?" He asked and Kie laughs, putting her forehead to his shoulder, the other boys joining in as JJ took out his bandanna, wrapping it in it. "Oh, my God." JJ looks at them happily.

"We're gonna get this son of a bitch, man."

Jake got up and held out his hand for Kie, "good job, guys." Pope tells them and Kie nods. "Yeah." She looks at Jake, smiling faintly. "You guys did it. You did it." JJ says, smiling at Jake and Kie who he then pulls into a hug, pulling Pope in it as well, laughing loudly.

"Let's get this to Shoupe."

On the walk to Kie's car, Jake looks at her, "do you want me to drive?" He asked her and she nods, grabbing his hand. "Yeah, thanks." She says and he just squeezed her hand gently. "I was so scared... not just for myself, but you too." He says, frowning a bit and she just puts her arm around his waist, walking closer. "We're okay. Yeah?"
