IV. Renegotiating.

    

     ONCE IT was nighttime, that's when Jake told Kie to call Gavin from her phone which Pope gave them the number for, entering it into Kie's phone before handing it back to her as JJ looks at Pope. "Hold on, why does she get to tickle?" He asked, sounding disappointed.

"She's the best tickler." Pope reasoned with a shrug, looking at JJ as Kie looks at Jake. "Should I, like, do an accent?" She asked and the boy nods. "Definitely disguise your voice." He tells her and she glanced at the boys in the back. "Disguise my voice like how? How would you like me to talk?" She asked, now speaking in an English accent as she looks at Jake again who just looked back at her.

"Not like that." JJ said right away, shaking his head and Jake pointed at the blond. "Gonna have to side with JJ. Just do Batman or something." He shrugs and she looks him in the eyes. "Batman," she says in a deep voice. "There you go." Pope pointed at her.

"Spot-on. Let's do it."

Kie presses the call button, waiting as she glanced at Jake nervously. "Hello?" Gavin picked up the phone. "Hello." Kie says in her deep voice, looking at Jake. "I can't." She whispers. "Just talk." He whispers back, giving her an encouraging smile. "Hello?"

She clears her throat. "Is Gavin there?" She asked into the phone's mic. "This is Gavin. Who's this? Hello?" He responded back with and Jake just stares at Kie. "I know what happened on the tarmac." She said then the man nervously laughs in response. "Um... who's this?" He asked. "It was Rafe Cameron. But you already knew that, and you lied about it." She says into the phone and Jake glanced down, staring at the phone in her hands.

"Okay. Who is this?" Gavin sounds more serious and nervous. "We're gonna prove it." Kie says. "You're gonna tell me who this is. Come on." Gavin demanded but Kie kept going, "you could have saved her, Gavin, and you didn't. And you're not getting away with this." She says. "Listen to me! Who is this?"

She then hung up, looking up at Jake. "How was that?" She asked and then glanced back at JJ and Pope. "Yeah, I was scared." JJ says, looking away and Jake just nods, smiling at Kie. "Good job." He tells her and she smiles back faintly, glancing away. "Alright, we tickled the wire. Phase two complete." Pope spoke up from the backseat, looking at Jake.

"Now we wait and listen." Jake nods as Kie looks at her phone. "Okay." She says as she puts it back into the cupholder she usually puts her phone, keys and AirPods case in. The four wait patiently then the car turned on. "Alright. Here he comes. Shh. Stay down." Pope whispered to them as they all hide as the car drove past Kie's car. "He didn't see us." JJ sounds sure of it as they then all sat up.

"Hit it." Jake says. "Go, go, go, go." Pope kept repeating and Kie drives off, turning the car around so they can follow after Gavin. "Call Ward Cameron." The man says over the AirPods Jake has on, JJ and Pope watching him with anticipation as Kie focused on driving. "Hello?" He hears Ward next. "He called Ward." He informs the others, glancing back. "Are you serious?" Kie asked as JJ and Pope look at each other with shock. "Yeah."

"Can you talk?" The audio cut off afterwards, sounding a little distorted. "Can you get closer? I can't really hear them..." He asked Kie in a gentle tone, still trying to see if he can make out the words. "Yeah, sure." Kie says as ahe began driving faster to get a bit closer to Gavin's vehicle. "I need to be paid more, alright?"

"He's talking about renegioating..."

"You need to stop and think very carefully about what you're about to say here, okay, because I have treated you very well. And I can't figure out why I should give you one more penny." Ward is then cut off by Gavin, "I've got something that could put you away for life, okay?" He said and Ward asked him what he was talking about so Jake glanced at Kie.

"Dude, what are they saying?" JJ hits his arms so Jake hushed him. "I've got the gun, Ward, that your son used. I have it. I know you told me to toss it. I know how you work. I kept it." Gavin said and Jake looks at the others.

"Gavin's got the gun that Rafe used to kill Peterkin." He tells them, before looking back at Gavin's vehicle ahead of them. "Somebody called me, okay? People know..." "Holy shit." Kie says. "People are onto me. Somebody knows what's going on, okay?" Gavin says to Ward and Jake turns his head, sighing.

"It seems like he's using it as extortion..." He says to JJ and Pope. "Nobody isn't on you. There's nobody that knows anything. Somebody is just screwing around with you. You just gotta calm down." Ward says, trying his best to calm Gavin. "I want triple, and I want the plane." The man says as his response.

"I can't do that."

"I don't care, Ward. You have to figure it out. I've got the gun." The car pulls to the side of the road. "Wait, he's pulling over." Kie looks at Jake, sounding alarmed. "Shit." Jake says quietly and Kie gestures. "Do I pull behind him? What do I do?" She asked the three boys.

"Just go around the block." Pope says and JJ agrees, "yeah, yeah, just go." Jake says, putting his hand to her shoulder gently, looking at the vehicle they then pass by. "I want the money now. You have to meet me tonight." Gavin says. "We're gonna lose him." Kie said and JJ just tells her to go. "I'm going. I'm going." She says but then Jake loses the signal.

"I lost the signal, I can't hear jack shit, guys." He tells them. Up ahead, there's a construction area where they're working on the road. "What the hell is this?" JJ asked and Jake looks at Kie. "You have to stop and turn around. Just pull in here and back up." He says to her, pointing at the parking spot of one of the houses. "Okay, okay," Kie says, stopping.

"I'm just gonna back up." She says and right when she's about to, a construction truck comes to stop them in their way so JJ got out on his side, looking at the construction workers. "Hey! We were about to back up." JJ shouted and Jake just looked around. "Fuck it." He murmured and got out. "What are you doing?!" Kie is quick to follow him, hopping out.

"Hey! Guys! Where are you--" "we gotta know where they're meeting!" Jake shouted and Kie caught up to her, running behind him. "We're going after them, right?" JJ asked Pope, walking around the vehicle and Pope nods. "Yeah, let's go." He says before they started running, apologizing to the workers that told them they couldn't park their car there.
