XL. We Lost Them.

    

     THE THREE boys get taken out of Shoupe's cop car, as Kie was let out of a different car by Plumb, she came to the boys' side right away as they're escorted to a tent by Plumb. "Right to your left here." Shoupe tells them as Plumb pointed to the chairs. "Right here." She says and Pope took his seat first. "Sit down, don't move." Shoupe says as Kie and Jake sat down together with JJ on the other side of Kie.

"We got a lot to talk about. Keep an eye on these kids." Shoupe tells the SBI cop standing nearby who now stands in front of them, holding a gun in his arms. "Blockade is up at the marsh and Masonboro and all other inlets from Shem Creek to Breach Inlet. I want eyes on all coastal access point, people. Let's get this guy." A man in the other tent announced.

Jake looks at Kie to his right who's already looking at him with a worried look. And just like that, their hands meet between their thighs and Jake interlocked their fingers like it was natural. In a way it was as Kie glanced down at their hands and let out a soft sigh.

They were sitting there waiting when there was an announcement the power was back on. Not long after, they yelled that they see them so Jake sat up straight worriedly, looking to the other tent before looking at the others.

After some time, they all got questioned one by one and then they were waiting in the same tent once again as it rained outside. Jake was getting more and more anxious and nervous as his arm was on the back of Kie's chair. At some point, she leaned against his shoulder and he put his arm around her shoulders.

He looked over at the other two, Pope was staring straight ahead as JJ glanced over, smirking slightly before he looks down. Jake looks at Kie who glanced up at him, putting his hand up to his shoulder, closing her eyes.

When Shoupe walked in, Jake nudged Kie as the other two boys immediately got up so they stood up as well. "Did you find them?" Pope asked, standing in front of Shoupe and the other two deputies with Jake as Kie and JJ stand behind them. Shoupe shakes his head, "no." He says and Jake furrows his brows.

"So, they got away?" He asked him. Thunder rumbled in the air as Jake waited for his answer. "We, uh... we lost them." Shoupe glanced between the three boys before looking at Pope. "I'm sorry." He then apologized.

"You lost them? What do you mean you lost them? Like, they're gone? What are you talking about?" Pope asked worriedly. "They took an open boat into a tropical depression, Pope." Shoupe explains, shaking his head. "So, they're dead?" Kie asked the officer.

He looks at her, looking down, "we don't know." He answers her. "What do you mean you don't know?! You drove them straight to the storm!" Jake raised his voice. "Are you kidding me? Come here!" JJ shouted, grabbing Shoupe. "I'm gonna kill you!" He yelled.

"JJ!" Jake says, sounding upset. "JJ, stop!" Kie says and another cop gets between the two. "I'm gonna kill you, you bastard!" JJ yelled at Shoupe as Jake turns Shoupe towards him. "You killed him!" He shouts at him. "He didn't kill anyone, and you know it!" Pope says from beside Jake. "We're still looking for him, alright?" Shoupe tries to calm them down.

"It's all your fault!" Jake yelled in his face as Kie grabs his arm. "Guys, guys, stop. Please, just stop." Kie cried and Jake turns to her, grabbing her arm. Just then, Kie's parents walked in, Pope's parents followed behind along with Jake's mom holding Evie. Kie walked over to her mom and dad, embracing them.

Pope's mom and dad walked over to him as Jake rushed over to his mom, embracing her and Evie, crying. "Jake..." His mom caressed her son's head and Jake kissed the top of Evie's head, sobbing before looking at his mom. "They--they're dead, mom." He cried and his mom touched his face gently.

"I know, I know..." She says softly and he looked down at Evie who's staring up at him with a small pout, almost as if she can sense why her father was crying. Jake turned around when he felt a hand on his back and he immediately embraced Kie. He rubbed her back and kissed the side of her head.

She sobs onto his shoulder as he squeezed her in his arms tightly before pulling back. He put his hands to her face and brushed away her tears with his thumbs as she sniffled. "Hey, this is... my mom," he stepped aside a bit and Kie smiles at the woman. "Hi, Mrs. Lennox..." She says and Jake looks at his mom.

"This is Kiara... my friend." He says, but his hand on her waist shows his mom she wasn't just a friend as she smiles at the pair. "Nice to meet you, Kiara... wish it was on better circumstances." She says, bowing to the girl who smiled and bowed back to her. Jake smiled at Kie before he grabs Evie from his mom's arms. "And this is Evie..." He whispers to Kie who looks at the baby in his arms.

"Hi." She whispers, smiling softly and Jake looked over at the others. Pope and JJ walked over to them, "wow... so this is the infamous Evie." JJ says, smiling. "Yeah." Jake says, rubbing Evie's back gently, smiling. "Jake. We can go home now..." His mom says and Jake looks over. "Okay... Just give me a minute." He says and she just nodded.

"I'll see you guys?" He looks at his friends who all nod right away, their eyes still on Evie. "What?" He chuckles and Pope just smiles. "Nothing... she just looks so much like you." He says and Kie giggles softly. "Yeah..." She looks up to meet his eyes and he just smiles.

"Thanks for the compliment that I'm cute. I'll see you guys." He nods before looking at Kie again. "I'll text you once my phone is full battery, okay?" He says and she nods quickly. "Later..." She says as he then walks away to join his mom. The other three got to leave as well not long after, and once at home, Jake had to hold Evie to make her fall asleep due to the storm before he put her into her crib.

He walked over to his bedside table and grabbed his phone, biting his bottom lip before opening his conversation with Kiara. He types many drafts, saying hi, erasing it because it sounds lame, typing out hello but it still sounds lame and then he typed out Kie Kie Kie, but it sounded funny saying it in his head.

Then he typed I wanna kiss you again. But his face gets red and he's flustered at the thought so he quickly erased it. Instead he just greeted her like normal and she replied like normal. They were the same, talking and then she said goodnight with a heart emoji. He replied the same before putting his phone on top of his chest, smiling at the ceiling.

+ going on a break until part two because i'm leaving to camp like every spring and fall, so it'll probably be a 2 and a half week break before i'm back to being active again
