Shortly after waking up the next morning, Matt smiled as he came down to the kitchen to see his sister there making some pancakes. "You are too kind Christie." Turning around to look at her brother, Christie smiled at him while working on the pancakes. "It's ok Matt. What you are offering is really a lot of stuff. It's far too much." Matt shook his head when his sister told him that before walking over to the kitchen. "Come here." Christie agreed with her brother when she said that before feeling him get close to her and wrap his arms around her. Kissing the top of her head, Matt smiled at her. "It's not too much. You are my sister and I want to support you in this."
Christie's POV:
When Matt told me that he wants to support me in this, I couldn't help but smile. We haven't always been close since our mom went to jail but...this is just a lot. Going to walk over to the coffee maker, Matt turned to look at me and just took a breath. "Is it ok if I drink coffee? I know that you aren't supposed to." I smiled when Matt asked me that. "It's fine Matt. Go ahead and have coffee." He nodded and smiled when I said that before walking away to the kitchen. "What do you want for breakfast sis?" I laughed and smiled. "You making pancakes?" He agreed with me. "That sounds great...and it's exactly what Gabby told me she wants too." I agreed with him."Is there a reason you're in your sweats?" Matt sighed when I asked him that. "I think that me and Gabby might just rest in bed today if that's ok." I know you're here but...it's what we normally do the day after my shift." I agreed with him when he told me that. "So, you want me to just relax out here?" Matt sighed when I asked him that. "I'm really sorry sis. I want to be there for you...yet I also want to try and keep a bit of normalcy. I am still worried about the boys and I guess I just want to cuddle up to them in bed today." I agreed with him and smiled at the idea. "You love being a dad don't you Matt?" He nodded and smiled when I asked him that.
"I love being a dad. It's an amazing experience and I am so glad that we have the kids. But, I have to do some work too." I just looked at him when he said that. "What do you mean? You don't have shift today?" Going to grab a pan, Matt turned to look at me. "I'm a Battalion Chief Christie. I still have paperwork. I need to report water usage and stuff." I agreed with him when he said that. "Do you like your job?" Matt smiled when I asked him that. "Honestly, I love my job and it's the best thing in the entire world. I'm so glad that I ended up staying at the CFD. I was going to quit after mom died." I was shocked when he said that. "WHAT!"
Matt nodded and agreed with me when I yelled 'what' towards him. "Yeah. I thought it was going to be too hard to work at the firehouse when that's where mom died." I agreed with him when he told me that because that makes a lot of sense. "But then, I remembered all the good memories I made there with Gabby. It's where we met, where we fell in love, where I proposed to her for the first time...where we learned the gender of our kids. It's hard to explain but...it's like a second home to us." I nodded and agreed with Matt when he said that because it sounded quite romantic in a way. "You know...in a way, that sounds quite romantic." Matt smiled at me.
Going to grab a mixing bowl, Matt just went to put some pancake mix (and water) in the bowl so that he can start some pancakes for us all. "So, what are you going to do today?" I sighed when he asked me that. "I think I am going to read up a bit on the treatment options." Matt just looked at me when I said that. "What do you mean options? You're going to fight this right?" I agreed with him and smiled when he asked me that. "Hey, of course Matt. I promise that I'm going to fight this. Me not fighting this cancer will never be an option for me." Matt smiled and agreed with me when I told him that. "Matt, don't lie to me and say that you aren't scared."
Taking a breath as he heated up the pan, he turned to look at me. "Of course I'm scared Christie. I'm not ready to loose my sister. I'm not ready for my kids to loose their aunt before they even get a chance to know her. They already lost the chance to know their grandmother...I am not going to let them loose their chance to meet their only aunt." I agreed with Matt when he said that and just smiled at him. I then went to get up and just smiled as I went to walk over to him. I knew that he was worried and I definitely wanted to give him comfort. (A little strange since I should be getting the comfort). And obviously, Matt felt the same way as he hugged me.
"God, I should be the one giving you comfort." I nodded and agreed with him when he said that before leaning back and looking at him. "I was literally thinking the same exact thing." Matt just smiled and agreed with me when I said that. "Here, maybe you can help me make some pancakes for the kids? We decided to start feeding the girls food." I smiled and agreed with him when he told me that. "I think that sounds perfect. This is when I started to feed Violet food." Matt just nodded and smiled when I told him that, going to hug me from the side. "God, now let's just get the pancakes done so that we can have breakfast. Maybe I can eat with you."
I shook my head when he told me that. "Non sense, you eat with your family. Anyways, I am going to rest today. I didn't sleep that well last night." Matt turned his head and looked at me when I told him that. "You okay sis?" I sighed when he asked me that. "I guess I am just scared with the pandemic and stuff. I'm scared that I am going to be so immunocompromised that I am going to give this to one of your kids." Matt gulped when I said that and just agreed with me. "Christie, I promise that nothing is going to happen. Things are going to go great and you are going to beat this cancer." I smiled and agreed with him when he told me that.
Matt's POV:
As I looked at my sister after I told her that she's going to beat this cancer, I had this feeling that she truly believed me. Meanwhile, I was just scared. I need to calm down because I am not the once that needs to be scared right now. I am not the one who can die, that's my sister. "Okay, listen...I just need to say this. I am trying to be strong but...I am scared. Is that weird?" Christie shook her head when I asked her that. "No, of course not. You are obviously going to be scared of loosing me. That's normal Matt." I sighed and agreed with her when she said that. "I promise Christie, things are going to get better once you are in treatment." Christie smiled and agreed.I then went to go hug her and just smiled while going to kiss her forehead softly. "Listen, how about you help me with the pancakes? We can do stuff together. I promise okay sis?" Christie smiled and agreed with me. "And I am definitely going to be having fun here with your kids." I smiled and agreed with Christie when she told me that. "If you ever want to watch them for us..." Christie shook her head. "Not yet, I'm resting." I nodded and agreed with her. "Right, of course. But listen, I need to make food. Also, I might get undressed and cuddle up to Gabby in bed. I Like doing that." Christie laughed. "I am not watching your kids so you can have sex, just a warning."
I laughed and then went to snap my fingers. "Dang, I was just about to ask you that." Going to slap my arm, Christie was not happy when I said that. "I am resting." I nodded and agreed with her. "Listen, we might get together with Gabby's family. I hope that's okay?" Christie sighed. "I know I haven't spent much time with Antonio...but I need to see him more." I nodded and agreed with her. "Just curious, are you going to tell him that you have cancer?" Christie looked at me when I said that. "Why, he's my ex?" I took a breath when she asked me that. I then decided that the reason I was going to ask her to tell Antonio was selfish. "Never mind."
Christie just looked at me. "What?" I then sighed. "I was going to say...it might give Gabby somebody to talk about. She's going to be scared for me and..." Christie understood. "You want her to have somebody to turn to if she wants to talk about it." I nodded and agreed with her. "That, and I want her to be able to call her mom to help her with your kids when I take you to the hospital." Christie just looked at me when I said that. "What do you mean?" I just laughed. "I"m in this with you Christie. I am going to take you to appointments and we are going to fight this together. I will give you my shift schedule and you can let me help you as much as I can."
Christie smiled and agreed with me when I said that before wrapping her arms around mine. "That sounds like a great idea. I would love it if you came to my treatments with me." I nodded and agreed with my sister when she said that. Going to kiss the top of her head, I smiled. "I promise, I am here for you sis. Me and Gabby both are." Christie smiled and agreed with me when I said that. Going to wrap her arm around me, she just smiled because she was glad that I was on her side. "I'm here for you sis. Just lean on me." She nodded and smiled when I said that. "Okay, just finish the pancakes. I know you have work to do too." I sighed and agreed.
"I'm going to do it during the boys' naptime when Gabby sleeps." Christie nodded and smiled when I told her that. "Okay. Well, just get going. I'm sure that Gabby's hungry." I laughed and agreed with Christie when she told me that, continuing to talk (and laugh) with her while I made her breakfast this morning.
